Através da combinação entre os métodos “Estado da Arte” e da Historiografia da Psicanálise, o presente estudo visa uma investigação de caráter histórico relativa à produção de dissertações, teses e artigos psicanalíticos pertencentes às três últimas décadas, tendo como tema principal a paternidade no Brasil, e como objetivos específicos, identificar a produção teórica psicanalítica a respeito da Paternidade na sociedade brasileira e os autores brasileiros que se dedicaram a estudar a Paternidade utilizando-se do enfoque psicanalítico; compreender quais as concepções de Paternidade vigentes na família contemporânea; e reconhecer as principais influências teóricas entre as diferentes correntes psicanalíticas que prevalecem nos estudos sobre paternidade. Esta pesquisa consiste em um estudo quantitativo e qualitativo de dissertações, teses e artigos concernentes à produção intelectual sobre a Paternidade no Brasil, considerando não apenas o que se tem produzido sobre o tema, como também a forma como este tema vem sendo trabalhado pelos autores. Foi possível verificar com este trabalho que o pai continua sendo o responsável por seu papel simbólico de interditar a relação incestuosa mãe-filho e inserir o indivíduo na cultura e sociedade. Para a Psicanálise, o pai é aquele a quem a mãe o nomeia, e não necessariamente aquele quem participou na origem do filho. Uma vez que a paternidade vem se configurando cada vez mais como um intercâmbio entre a função materna e paterna, tudo parece caminhar para um modelo de pai mais próximo e nutridor / The present study is an historical investigation about Brazilian psychoanalytic publications related to the Fatherhood in Brazil during the last three decades. This research consists of quantitative and qualitative studies regarded to the intellectual production of fatherhood in Brazil, taking into consideration not only what is being published about this subject, but also considering the way this subject is being elaborated by Brazilian authors. It was possible to verify with this study that the father is still responsible for the mother-son relationship prohibition, considered his symbolic function by Psychoanalysis, and also important to introduce the individual in society and culture. According to Freud and Lacan’s Psychoanalysis, fatherhood is associated to the paternal function, not necessarily being connected to the male character, but to its symbolical function of the Name of the Father, active metaphor in the incest prohibition, and the insertion of the individual in the Law and culture. As result from all the changes that the family configuration has suffered over the years, the picture of the father is found in process of transformation. Everything seems to be changing to a model of a nurturing father once fatherhood has been seen as an exchanging between the maternal and paternal functions

That God May be All in All: A Paterology Demonstrating that the Father is the Initiator of all Divine ActivityRippee, Ryan Lowell 23 December 2016 (has links)
Through a biblical and exegetical study of the Father’s roles and works, this dissertation argues that, among the persons of the Godhead, Father is the initiator of all divine activity. This does not mean that God the Son or God the Holy Spirit are inferior nor does it mean that they do not equally and fully possess the divine nature in some sort of functional tri-theism. On the contrary, Scripture repeatedly affirms that there is one and only one God; that God exists eternally in three distinct persons (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), and that these persons are equally divine in essence and attributes. Furthermore, the initiating role of the Father is consistent with inseparable operations. Again, Scripture teaches that there are real distinctions, without ultimate separation, in regard to how the three persons of the Trinity operate. Thus, what this thesis demonstrates is that within the undivided work of the Triune God, the distinct appropriation of the Father is to be the initiator.

On becoming a father and being a man: a narrative exploration of the experience of masculinity in the transition to fatherhoodLarsen, Sean 24 September 2021 (has links)
Fatherhood is a gendered relationship between a male caregiver and a child. The change from non-father to father is a significant transition in men’s lives. Over the past fifty years in North America there appears to be increasing divergence between socially dominant masculinities and fatherhoods with men taking on more caregiving and domestic work. Using a qualitative narrative research methodology, I interviewed seven Canadian fathers about their experience of masculinity in their transition to first time fatherhood. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and individual narratives were generated. The narratives generated told the stories of fathers who spent more time engaged in direct caregiving and domestic labour than previous generations. They described divergence between hegemonic fatherhood roles and hegemonic masculinity as they transitioned to fatherhood. Fathers experienced a deepening of emotion in fatherhood incongruent with historical dominant masculinities. Overall, fathers found the experience of transitioning to fatherhood as meaningful and rewarding. / Graduate

The Lived Experiences of the Adolescent Father in Northern VirginiaMaiden, Brian Scott 03 October 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the lived experiences of adolescent fathers in a suburban environment in Northern Virginia. Specifically, phenomenological methods were used to capture the essence of these nine adolescent fathers\' experiences surrounding their conceptualization and enactment of fatherhood. Participants included 5 Hispanic (56%), 2 African-American (22%), 1 Caucasian (11%), and 1 Asian (11%). They ranged in age from 16 to 19 years of age with an average age of 18. Their perspective adds to the current literature and assists counselors and policy makers in gaining a greater understanding of the needs and perceptions of this marginalized group. A transformative process best described the lived experience of these adolescent fathers. Fatherhood was described as a life-changing event, as they traversed a range of negative behaviors to become actively involved fathers. An eco- constructivist model provided an appropriate framework to better understand the subjective meanings the adolescent fathers attached to their lived experiences throughout the transformative process. While the results cannot be generalized, the narratives of these participants provide insight into this marginalized population. These participants define fatherhood in traditional terms (i.e., father as primary provider) and expressed enthusiasm about being actively involved in their children\'s daily lives. Further, the majority expressed a renewed focus on educational attainment to provide a better future for themselves and their children. Although participants received assistance from their families, support was lacking from the educational system. This lack of support provides an avenue for communities, schools, and counselors to become advocates for adolescent fathers. School counselors are encouraged to reach out to community agencies, clinical mental heath counselors, and community college counselors as avenues for more complete services for adolescent fathers. There is a need for further research relating to the needs of adolescent fathers. Longitudinal research with these participants is necessary to ascertain how they enacted their conceptualization of fatherhood and the barriers they encountered. / Ph. D.

Exploration of Factors Affecting Single Black Mothers' Facilitation of Father-Child RelationshipsGardner, Shawn'ta 14 December 2018 (has links)
Literature shows that when fathers are involved in their children’s lives, their children have better outcomes and neighborhoods are safer. However, father involvement is often limited in situations where the father is a non-residential parent. Previous research has indicated that there are several factors that may influence a custodial mother’s facilitation of the father-child relationship. These factors may include the existing co-parenting relationship between mother and father and the mother’s perception of the father’s appreciation of her mothering of the child. Particularly in low-income families, the struggle to simply meet economic demands overrides a custodial parent’s desire to facilitate the relationship. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the perspective of single, never-married, low-income, custodial Black mothers related to their facilitation of the father-child relationship when the father does not reside in the home with the mother and child. The Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1991) was employed as the conceptual framework of this study. This theory is used to help understand how a mother’s intent to facilitate the father-child relationship is partly influenced by her capacity to do so. Using purposive sampling, I interviewed 10 participants who identified as Black mothers with children between the ages of 5 and 11 whose father identified as Black and did not reside in the home. The participants also all self-reported as low-income. A constructivist perspective was employed during data collection and analysis, which allowed the participants’ perceptions to be heard individually and collectively. Four themes emerged through the coding and analysis of the interview transcripts. The first was that mothers felt that their efforts to facilitate the father-child relationship went unappreciated. The second theme was that mothers perceived that fathers were not taking responsibility for their lives and helping themselves. The third theme was that mothers had an expiration of time with which to work with the fathers. When they felt their effort to facilitate the father-child relationship was not increasing the father’s involvement, the mothers halted their efforts altogether. The fourth theme was that mothers drew upon a variety of support sources beyond working with the father. The findings of this descriptive study can be used to influence the development of co-parenting curricula, to improve family-court mediation, and to support healthy relationships among unwed and fragile families.

Transition to Fatherhood: A Puerto Rican PerspectiveBarenski, Suzanne 01 September 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore the events that have promoted or hindered a first-time Puerto Rican father's transition to fatherhood. Interviews were conducted with twelve fathers who reported one child one year of age or less. Within the United States the Hispanic population is the largest and the fasting growing minority population. Early father involvement for immigrant and ethnically diverse families has not been widely studied. Analysis of the interview data revealed two main themes; "Accepting of Fatherhood" and "Adjusting to Fatherhood." Specific to these themes, three categories became apparent; "Buying-In: Initial Step to Fatherhood," "The Journey: Going Through It," and "Moving Into Fatherhood: The Rest of the Story." Four sub-themes emerged and were relevant to the second stage: "emotions, connections, recognition, and responsibility." The journey and moving into fatherhood stages were conceptualized as a circular relationship allowing the father to interact with new experiences as the opportunity or challenge arises. Meleis' middle range theory of "Transitions" provided the theoretical framework for the study. Findings indicated most fathers in this study were highly present and involved throughout the childbearing period and the joy these fathers expressed for their child was clearly described. Fathers also identified feeling of exclusion and wanting to be viewed as an equal status parent with the mother. Fathers expressed appreciation for the opportunity to tell their story. These findings are supportive of the contemporary view of machismo. Policy and practice implications are described for educational programs and future research.

Magister Artium (Child and Family Studies) - MA(CFS) / Fathers have a valuable, nurturing role to play in the lives of their children. Although a father’s availability and time with his child is important, the quality of a father’s involvement with his child is however, the strong predictor of child well-being. Therefore, Fatherhood intervention programmes desire to address fundamental issues that prevent men from succeeding in their fathering role. An understanding and evidence of the influence of fatherhood interventions on the role of the father in the family, is thus required. The aim of the study was to explore the perceptions, experiences and challenges of families after the father’s exposure to a fatherhood intervention programme. A qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews was utilized. Thematic analysis had been used to analyse the data and five themes emerged from the study. They were constructions of fatherhood, experiences and perceptions of the fatherhood intervention programme, father’s experiences of the father-child relationship after exposure to the programme, spouse/partner perceptions and experiences of their relationships with their spouse after exposure to the programme, and the facilitator’s experiences of engaging fathers. The overall outcomes were that families perceived and experienced the fathers to be more involved, responsible and sharing in parenthood after exposure to the fatherhood intervention programme. This led to an increase of father involvement with children - childcare activities, schoolwork and well-being of the children; their spouse/partner - an improvement in the quality of the relationship between the fathers and their spouses/partners and an increase involvement in the home.
