An investigation of the β-Carotene status of Holstein cows in South Africa

Experiment 1 A survey on the β-Carotene status of Holstein cows in different feeding systems In order to make meaningful recommendations with regard to β-Carotene supplementation is it necessary to know whether cows are deficient in β-Carotene. The objective of this study was to generate data on the β-Carotene status of Holstein cows under three different feeding systems in South Africa, namely; pasture-based, silage-based and hay-based feeding systems. A survey was conducted amongst 30 farms with 10 farms utilizing each of the three systems. Twenty multiparous cows were randomly selected from each farm. Blood samples were taken from the tail vein and analysed for plasma β-Carotene using the iCheck™, a hand held spectrophotometer (BioAnalyt, GmbH, Germany). Cows were then classified as deficient (< 1.5 mg/L), marginal (1.5 to 3.5 mg/L) or optimal (>3.5 mg/L). The average plasma β-Carotene levels differed between feeding systems and concentrations were 5.53, 2.98 and 1.71 mg/L for the pasture based, hay-based and silage-based feeding systems respectively. There was a wide variation in average plasma β-Carotene concentrations in cows on farms within the different feeding systems. Average values per farm ranged between 3.84 and 10.81 mg/L for the pasture based farms, 0.91 and 5.00 mg/L for the hay-based farms and between 0.78 and 3.38 mg/L for the silage-based farms. Results suggest cows on a pasture based feeding system have optimal β-Carotene status and do not need supplementation. Cows on hay-based systems are marginal and on farm testing is recommended. Cows on silage-based systems are generally deficient and β-Carotene supplementation is recommended. Experiment 2 Effect of prepartum β-Carotene supplementation on the postpartum β-Carotene status of Holstein cows. It has been recommended that cows be supplemented β-Carotene when blood plasma levels are deficient (< 1.5 mg/L) or marginal (< 3.5 mg/L) especially during the transition period which is characterised by low intakes and significant losses of β-Carotene through colostrum. The objective of this trial was to determine to what extent prepartum β-Carotene supplementation could maintain postpartum plasma β-Carotene concentrations above 3.5 mg/L in cows fed a lucerne hay-based TMR. Twenty multiparous Holstein cows were blocked into two groups of ten cows each and were fed either 8kg/d of a control TMR (DM) or the control diet supplemented with 1200mg of ROVIMIX® β-Carotene 10%. The experimental period was from 60d pre-partum until 56d postpartum; however the period of the β-Carotene supplementation for the one group was only from 60d prepartum until calving. Blood samples were collected from the tail vein once per week and analysed for plasma β-Carotene using the iCheck™, a handheld spectrophotometer (BioAnalyt, GmbH, Germany). Average plasma β-Carotene concentrations prepartum were higher (6.15 mg/L) (P < 0.05) for supplemented cows compared to the control cows (3.10 mg/L). For the first 5 weeks postpartum, plasma β-Carotene was higher (P < 0.05) for supplemented cows compared to control cows (3.00 mg/L vs. 1.39 mg/L), from weeks 6 to 9 there were no differences (P > 0.05). Overall the average postpartum plasma β-Carotene values were 1.50 mg/L for the control cows and 2.43 mg/L for the supplemented cows and did not differ. Supplemented cows maintained sufficient β-Carotene concentrations only for the first 2 weeks postpartum and were either marginal or deficient for the rest of the experimental period. The effect of cattle winter feeding systems on soil nutrients, forage growth, animal performance, and economics

Overwintering of cows is a major cost in a cow-calf production system on the prairies. Winter feeding hay and straw directly on pasture is a potentially more efficient and economical system compared to conventional drylot feeding in a yard. The objectives of the research described in this thesis were to compare winter feeding cattle directly on pasture to traditional drylot over-wintering of cattle and the associated mechanized spreading of manure on pasture. This trial compared the effects of winter feeding systems on pasture nutrient distribution, nutrient recovery in soil and forage, pasture forage response, cattle performance, and economics. <p>The experiment was conducted at Lanigan, SK, on an old russian wildrye grass pasture. Pasture nutrient levels and distribution were measured before and after winter feeding, as well as forage yield, and cattle weight and condition. Nutrient capture and cycling was assessed along with the economics of the different systems. In the pasture fed systems, cattle were fed by either bale processing or bale grazing methods over the winter of 2003-2004. Cattle concentration was 2080 cow-days ha-1, with the cattle in the field for 130 d. In the intensive system used for comparison, cattle were fed in a drylot and 67 tonnes ha-1 of raw manure or 22 tonnes ha-1 of compost was mechanically spread on the pasture in the fall of 2003.<p>Soil inorganic nitrogen (N) levels (0-15 cm) measured in the spring where the cattle were winter fed on pasture were 3 to 4 times the unfertilized, unmanured control treatment, with a mean gain of 117 kg N ha-1. Soil inorganic N was not significantly elevated where manure or compost had been spread by machine. Soil extractable potassium (K) was doubled on the winter feeding sites, with a mean gain of 1209 kg K ha-1. Soil extractable K did not increase where manure or compost had been spread mechanically. Soil distribution patterns of both nutrients were highly uneven following pasture feeding, with levels of inorganic soil N ranging from 12 to 626 kg ha-1 and extractable soil K ranging from 718 to 6326 kg ha-1. Additional nutrients in surface residue from uneaten feed, bedding, and manure were also heavy and variable following pasture feeding. Greater retention of N and K from urine added directly to the soil in the field in the bale grazing and bale processing systems compared to the drylot system is believed to be responsible for high soil available N and K levels compared to manure hauled from the drylot into the field.<p>Soil extractable phosphorus (P) levels (0-15 cm) were measured in the fall of 2005. The compost treatment had the largest increase at 2.6 times the control, an additional 46 kg ha-1. Mean soil P levels did not increase significantly where the cattle were wintered.<p> Over 18 months and 3 harvests, forage dry matter yields where the cattle were fed on pasture were 3 to 5 times the control where the cattle were fed on the pasture, and 1.4 to 1.7 times the control where raw manure or compost was mechanically spread. Also, protein content of the forage was increased to a greater extent in the in-field feeding compared to hauled raw manure or compost, reflecting a greater conservation of N.<p>The gain of N in the forage over 18 months on the winter feeding sites was 200 kg ha-1 of N, almost double what was measured in soil inorganic forms. Fourteen kg ha-1 of P was also recovered. This represented 34% of original feed N and 22% of original feed P that was imported into the field. Recovery of nutrients applied in the raw manure and compost sites was much lower, with only 7% recovery of N and 4% recovery of P in the forage. This was calculated to be 1% of original feed N and 3% of original feed P.<p>The system by which the cattle were overwintered had little influence on cattle weight and condition. All systems performed favorably in maintaining body weight and condition over the winter. Some slight advantages in cattle weight gain and condition were found on the winter feeding systems compared to the in-yard drylot that appeared to be related to slightly increased feed intake.<p>Economic calculations favored winter feeding directly on the pasture by 25% over the drylot systems when the feed value of additional pasture growth over 18 months was included and by 56% when the value of additional soil nutrients was factored in. Feed costs were similar between the systems but pasture feeding had savings in machinery use, fuel consumption and manure handling costs, and gains in pasture productivity.<p>Systems that winter fed cattle directly on pasture provided gains in nutrient cycling efficiencies, pasture growth, and economic savings compared to drylot feeding systems, while maintaining similar cattle growth and condition.

Systèmes d'alimentation alternatifs pour le développement des filières volailles en régions chaudes / Alternative feeding systems for the development of the poultry value chains in tropical areas

L’objectif de ce travail était d’évaluer, les possibilités de diversification des matières premières utilisées en alimentation de la volaille et les conditions d’application des systèmes d’alimentation séquentielle et mélangée en milieu chaud. Une méta-analyse et deux expérimentations in vivo ont permis de conclure qu’il est possible de combiner sorgho/tourteau de coton et millet/sorgho dans l'aliment du poulet sans effet synergique sur les performances. Chez la poule pondeuse, une étude réalisée en milieu chaud et humide a permis de montrer que lorsque l’animal est soumis à des conditions thermiques et hygrométriques variables, les performances de production des poules en alimentation séquentielle et mélangée sont fortement affectées. En température chaude et constante, les poules en alimentation séquentielle ont une meilleure efficacité alimentaire que les poules en alimentation classique. Ce travail a permis de mettre en place des systèmes d’alimentation permettant de mieux valoriser des matières premières locales et d’améliorer l’ajustement des apports aux besoins des animaux. Les modèles présentés permettent ainsi de renforcer les liens entre filières avicole et végétale et de contribuer à leur développement. / The objective of this work was to evaluate the impact of alternative feed ingredients in poultry feeding and to determine bird’s responses to sequential and loose-mix feeding in hot climate. A meta-analysis and in vivo trials were performed on the use of millet. sorghum and cottonseed meal in poultry diets. Results showed that simple or combined utilization of these ingredients resulted in similar feed intake and growth performance as corn/soybean-based diets. In laying hens, a study conducted in warm conditions showed that when they are subjected 10 variable temperature and humidity throughout and within a day, laying and growth performance decreased in sequential and loose-mix feeding. A second study confirmed that high environmental temperature does not disable sequential feeding benefits. This work suggest feeding systems in which feed ingredients produced in hot climates could be directly included in birds diets have been proposed. This will thereby help consolidating the links between poultry and vegetable supply chains and contribute to their development.

Estudo sobre a incidência das porosidades e sua identificação em uma liga de alumínio A356. / Study of porosity and identification in A356 alloy.

Este trabalho procurou identificar o defeito que ocorria no teste de estanqueidade de uma peça e apresentar a correlação entre o nível de porosidade encontrado no produto fundido com a liga de alumínio A356 e os processos de fusão e de manutenção sob temperaturas controladas, o teor de hidrogênio, o sistema de enchimento e de alimentação, obedecendo ao princípio de solidificação direcional e o posicionamento do modelo em relação à linha de divisão. Foram efetuadas algumas experiências com diferentes tempos de introdução de nitrogênio para a purificação do metal, com a inversão do modelo em relação ao plano de partição do molde, com a modificação das dimensões do sistema de enchimento, com a substituição dos massalotes laterais por outros com luvas exotérmicas e utilizando-se resfriadores. Tentou-se verificar os benefícios que os filtros cerâmicos proporcionam aos fundidos, principalmente quanto à diminuição do nível de porosidade, menor turbulência e maior capacidade de reter as inclusões e parte dos filmes de óxidos. Para comprová-los, propôs-se a fundição de peças, em moldes confeccionados pelo processo de areia à verde, com diferentes tipos de filtros cerâmicos nos canais de distribuição. As amostras foram analisadas no Laboratório Metalográfico do Departamento de Engenharia Metalúrgica e de Materiais da Escola Politécnica da Universidade de São Paulo e no Laboratório de Metalurgia e de Materiais Cerâmicos do Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas de São Paulo. Após a análise dos resultados em microscópio óptico, microscópio eletrônico de varredura e em espectrômetro por emissão de energia observou-se que o problema está relacionado principalmente com a alimentação e a solidificação direcional e não somente com o teor de hidrogênio. / The objective of this work is to study the type of defect identified during the pressure tightness test of aluminum parts and to establish a relationship between porosity level of an A356 aluminum alloy and the production processes, hydrogen level, feeding system, and directional solidification. Different nitrogen blowing times, inversion of the mould pattern, relative to the partition line, changing of the feeding system dimensions, replacement of the lateral feeding by exothermic gloves and the use of chills where tested. Ceramic filters were also tested, in order to evaluate their influence on the formation of porosities and on the porosity level, through a decrease of turbulence and an increase in the capacity of retaining non-metallic inclusions and part of the oxide films. Casting was performed by the green sand process using different ceramic filters. The obtained parts were metallographicaly analyzed through optical and scanning electronic microscopy using also EDS analysis. The results showed that porosity is related with the feeding conditions and directional solidification besides the hydrogen content of the alloys.

In the experiment with the perch, there was studied the influence of the stocking density on the production indicators and feeding behavior using self-feeding.
