The effects of fixed-term contracts on labour market performanceGuell-Rotllan, Maia January 2000 (has links)
During the 1980's, many European countries introduced flexibility measures in their labour market to fight high and persistent levels of unemployment. In particular, in many countries reforms consisted of the introduction of more flexible labour contracts (fixed-term contracts) in comparison to the predominant ones (permanent contracts). The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the effects of such contracts on the overall performance of the labour market. First, an economy with firing costs is analysed theoretically. Firing costs are generally considered one of the most important elements in making a labour market rigid. This chapter stresses the fact that it is not just the level of severance payments what matters, but a wider view of employment protection. In particular, dismissal conflicts are modeled explicitly and their cost is derived. In the second chapter, the effects on employment of introducing fixed-term contracts in an economy with only permanent contracts are analysed theoretically. Our findings are that higher employment at the expense of segmentation of the labour market only arises if wages are very flexible. Otherwise, employment is not necessarily higher than in a system with only permanent contracts. Moreover, from the social point of view, market segmentation is too large. The last two chapters are empirical work applied to Spain. The Spanish experience appears to be particularly useful in this context to draw some lessons of these policies because the unemployment rate is the highest among OECD economies despite the several "policy experiments" implemented in the last two decades. In Chapter 3 the duration pattern of fixed-term contracts and the determinants of the transformation of these into permanent ones are analysed. Evidence is found that fixed-term contracts are used as a screening device instrument. Also, employers use fixed-term contracts until their legal limit. In Chapter 4, we study the effects of fixed-term contracts on the duration distribution of unemployment. It is found that the chances of leaving unemployment for a reference group have increased at short durations, while they have decreased at long durations of unemployment.

Experimental and computational investigation of the roll forming processLindgren, Michael January 2009 (has links)
One of the first questions to consider when designing a new roll forming line is the number of forming steps required to produce a profile. The number depends on material properties, the cross-section geometry and tolerance requirements, but the tool designer also wants to minimize the number of forming steps in order to reduce the investment costs for the customer. There are several computer aided engineering systems on the market that can assist the tool designing process. These include more or less simple formulas to predict deformation during forming as well as the number of forming steps. In recent years it has also become possible to use finite element analysis for the design of roll forming processes. The objective of the work presented in this thesis was to answer the following question: How should the roll forming process be designed for complex geometries and/or high strength steels? The work approach included both literature studies as well as experimental and modelling work. The experimental part gave direct insight into the process and was also used to develop and validate models of the process. Starting with simple geometries and standard steels the work progressed to more complex profiles of variable depth and width, made of high strength steels. The results obtained are published in seven papers appended to this thesis. In the first study (see paper 1) a finite element model for investigating the roll forming of a U-profile was built. It was used to investigate the effect on longitudinal peak membrane strain and deformation length when yield strength increases, see paper 2 and 3. The simulations showed that the peak strain decreases whereas the deformation length increases when the yield strength increases. The studies described in paper 4 and 5 measured roll load, roll torque, springback and strain history during the U-profile forming process. The measurement results were used to validate the finite element model in paper 1. The results presented in paper 6 shows that the formability of stainless steel (e.g. AISI 301), that in the cold rolled condition has a large martensite fraction, can be substantially increased by heating the bending zone. The heated area will then become austenitic and ductile before the roll forming. Thanks to the phenomenon of strain induced martensite formation, the steel will regain the martensite content and its strength during the subsequent plastic straining. Finally, a new tooling concept for profiles with variable cross-sections is presented in paper 7. The overall conclusions of the present work are that today, it is possible to successfully develop profiles of complex geometries (3D roll forming) in high strength steels and that finite element simulation can be a useful tool in the design of the roll forming process.

Comparison of Ontario Pavement Designs Using the AASHTO 1993 Empirical Method and the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide MethodBoone, Jonathan January 2013 (has links)
The AASHTO 1993 Guide for Design of Pavement Structures is the most widely used pavement design method in both Canada and the United States, and is currently used by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) for both flexible and rigid pavement design. Despite its widespread use, the AASHTO 1993 pavement design method has significant limitations stemming primarily from the limited range of conditions observed at the AASHTO Road Test from which its empirical relationships were derived. The Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) was developed to address the perceived limitations of the AASHTO 1993 Guide. Although the MEPDG provides a rational pavement design procedure with a solid foundation in engineering mechanics, a considerable amount of work is required to adapt and validate the MEPDG to Ontario conditions.
The purpose of this research was to conduct a comparative analysis of Ontario structural pavement designs using the AASHTO 1993 Guide for Design of Pavement Structures and the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide. Historical flexible, rigid, and asphalt overlay pavement designs completed using the AASHTO 1993 pavement design method for the MTO were evaluated using a two-stage procedure. First, the nationally-calibrated MEPDG pavement distress models were used to predict the performance of the pavements designed using the AASHTO 1993 method. The purpose of this stage of the analysis was to determine whether the two methods predicted pavement performance in a consistent manner across a range of design conditions typical of Ontario. Finally, the AASHTO 1993 and MEPDG methods were compared based on the thickness of the asphalt concrete or Portland cement concrete layers required to satisfy their respective design criteria.
The results of the comparative analysis demonstrate that the AASHTO 1993 method generally over-predicted pavement performance relative to the MEPDG for new flexible pavements and asphalt overlays of flexible pavements. The MEPDG predicted that most of the new flexible pavements and asphalt overlays of flexible pavements designed using the AASHTO 1993 method would fail primarily due to permanent deformation and / or roughness. The asphalt layer thicknesses obtained using the MEPDG exceeded the asphalt layer thicknesses obtained using the AASHTO 1993 method, and a poor correlation was observed between the asphalt layer thicknesses obtained using the two methods. Many of the new flexible pavements and asphalt overlays of existing flexible pavements could not be re-designed to meet the MEPDG performance criteria by increasing the asphalt layer thickness.
The results of the comparative analysis showed that the AASHTO 1993 method generally under-predicted rigid pavement performance relative to the MEPDG, although the results varied widely between alternative rigid pavement designs. The AASHTO 1993 rigid pavement designs that the MEPDG predicted would not meet the rigid pavement performance criteria generally failed due to pavement roughness. A very poor correlation was observed between the Portland cement concrete layer thicknesses obtained using the MEPDG and AASHTO 1993 design methods. The MEPDG predicted thinner Portland cement concrete layer thicknesses than the AASHTO 1993 design method for most of the rigid pavement designs.

explicit representation is an important part in making the architecture easy to debug and extend. The utility, intuitiveness and flexibility of this architecture is shown in an evaluation of this architecture against older control programs that lack such explicit behavioural representation. This evaluation was carried out by developing behaviours for several common robotic tasks and demonstrating common problems that arose during the course of this development.

Over the last decade it has become increasingly popular to provide large public areas with gracefully designed 'flexible' staircases. One inherent characteristic of this type of construction is a low stiffness to mass ratio and hence a low natural frequency when compared to more traditional designs. A number of staircases have been found to be dynamically responsive to pedestrian traffic resulting in costly repairs. The objective of this thesis was to investigate the differences between human induced loading on floors with that on stairs. Experimental work carried out on a purpose built staircase showed that forces up to 3 times the static body weight were generated during fast descents while forces up to 2.5 times the static body weight were generated during fast ascents. The work also showed that first harmonic values generated while ascending were slightly higher than for descending whilst second harmonic values were up to 3 times greater for fast descents than for fast ascents. When compared with floor testing, stair testing produced first harmonic values nearly 2.5 times greater with second, third and fourth harmonic values nearly 3 times greater. The harmonic results for the flat testing were also incorporated into a new mathematical expression to predict peak accelerations on simply supported floors and footbridges. The experimental results were duplicated analytically by developing a computer program to calculate the vertical ground reaction forces from body segment positional data. Following a Newtonian approach, the predicted first harmonic values were 20% to 30% lower than actual while the second harmonic values were approximately the same. Monte Carlo simulation techniques were also used to model the effects of group loading on stairs. The simulations predicted enhancement factors (a multiplier on single subject loading) of 3 to 6 for smaller groups(< 9 people) and 4 for larger groups(> 25 people). If the experimental/analytical results are combined with the group loading predictions, the harmonic values for groups ascending or descending flexible staircase could be substantially increased. These results demonstrate that loading data from floors is highly inappropriate for staircase design.

However, the lateral response of the two models diverges as the stiffness is lowered. A number of recommendations are made for further testing and research, based on the conclusions of the study.

Scheduling of distributed autonomous manufacturing systemsTharumarajah, A. January 1995 (has links)
This thesis addresses the scheduling and control of shop-floor production units that operate in a highly autonomous and distributed environment. The distinct feature of this environment is the heterarchical nature of the control where the scheduling function is quite independently carried out by the units. The units solve only part of the overall problem while resolving conflicts to maintain consistent global schedules. The need for communication and coordination, in such circumstances, introduces many complexities that affects the quality of the schedules produced. These include lapses of open-loop control due to uncertainty of up-to-date status information, asynchronous behaviour, and uncontrollable propagation of conflicts. / A behaviour-based approach is introduced to solve these problems. Using this approach, the organisation of the shop-floor is viewed as similar to a colony of ants or an eco-system. The units operate quite independently but continue to adapt their schedules to changes in their environment. While they may not directly negotiate to resolve conflicts, their cooperation is innate or in-built through their local adaptive actions. This individual cooperative action of the units brings about a collective behaviour that produces the desired emergent global schedules. The major focus of this research is in examining the link between the individual and collective behaviours and developing a model that realises the desired scheduling functionality at the shop level. / In order to achieve high scheduling performance (both locally and globally) a model of a unit incorporating dynamic problem decomposition, allocation algorithms and adaptation mechanisms is developed. For the latter, a reinforcement learning model is used to adapt the scheduling horizon. In fact, an important contribution if this research is the novel view we take of the problem and the manner of adaptation. In addition, a communication model for simulating the scheduling behaviours is designed using concepts of Holonic and other emerging concepts of manufacturing systems. / The model is tested for a number of scheduling problems representing a variety of production situations. Preliminary results indicate an impressive scheduling performance comparable to well-known heuristics. Further examination indicates the types of dynamic behaviour that can be expected of such a model, including the levels of unresolved conflicts, the adaptability in the face of uncertainty, consequence of alternative communication policies and the sensitivities to adaptation. / This thesis has also a strong qualitative theme in reviewing and consolidating the concepts underlying the design and operational attributes of autonomous distributed organisations of the shop-floor.
