Aerodynamic and Aeroacoustic Analysis of Low Reynolds Number Propellers Using Higher-Order RANS Transition Turbulence ModelingPisharoti, Naina 05 June 2024 (has links)
The advent of advanced vehicle concepts involving Urban Air Mobility (UAM) and small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) has brought about a new class of rotorcraft technology which operate predominantly in low-Reynolds ($Re$) number regimes. In such regimes, the flow experiences complex boundary layer phenomena like laminar separation, flow transition and reattachment. These effects are known to greatly alter the flow at and near the rotor wall, influencing its aerodynamic performance as well as the noise generated. Capturing these effects in our computational models is necessary to further our understanding of rotor aerodynamics and acoustics.
The current study has introduced a novel RANS transition turbulence model, SSG/LRR-$\omega$-$\gamma$, that is capable of modeling different modes of transition involving natural, bypass, separation-induced and crossflow transition. The model framework uses a Reynolds stress transport model, SSG/LRR-$\omega$, as the base turbulence formulation and is coupled with Menter's $\gamma$ transition model. It was validated using a number of canonical cases that exhibited different transition mechanisms and the model performed equivalently or better than existing state-of-the-art transition models. It is worthy to note that the proposed model was able to perform well in three-dimensional flows, demonstrated using the case of a prolate spheroid. This underscores the capability of Reynolds stress models to accurately capture complex flow curvatures, improving upon the capabilities of linear eddy viscosity models.
The transition model, integrated into OpenFOAM, was then employed to analyze two different UAV propellers. The rotor flow was examined using a URANS simulation with an overset grid. The objective was twofold: firstly, to validate the predictions generated by the proposed model for low-Reynolds number (low-$Re$) rotors, and secondly, to evaluate its effectiveness across a range of operating conditions. Comparisons were drawn against established fully turbulent and transition models. The analysis showed that transition models in general tended to be consistent in their predictions and less sensitive to changing operating conditions when compared to fully turbulent models. They also demonstrated the ability to accurately predict the mechanisms leading to separation and transition. Further, the proposed transition model demonstrated superior capability in capturing detailed flow features, particularly in the wake, compared to other fully turbulent and transition models, which is attributed to its Galilean invariant framework.
To leverage the boundary layer information obtained from the proposed model, a semi-empirical broadband noise prediction method was implemented. This method utilized boundary layer data predicted by URANS simulations to estimate blade self-noise. An evaluation of the fully turbulent $k$-$\omega$ SST model and the proposed transition model revealed that both exhibited reasonable accuracy at lower rotor advance ratios. However, the transition model performed better at higher advance ratios. It was also observed that CFD-based approaches provided superior prediction accuracy compared to lower-fidelity aerodynamic models in the context of blade self-noise prediction Finally, the proposed aerodynamic and acoustic computational framework was applied to a design case study of swept propellers to understand the advantages of blade sweep on rotor aerodynamics and noise. A qualitative analysis of the flow suggested that the swept rotor exhibited lower levels of blade wake interaction compared to the unswept geometry, in line with the experimental observations. / Doctor of Philosophy / Advanced vehicle concepts such as air taxis for Urban Air Mobility (UAM) and other multi-copter applications like drone delivery, reconnaissance, etc. are emerging sectors in aviation that have garnered great industrial as well as academic interest. However, since these vehicles are expected to fly at low altitudes within urban settings, noise mitigation is of particular interest to improve their public acceptance. The vehicle configurations in these applications predominantly comprise of rotorcraft which operate at low Reynolds ($Re$) numbers and tip speeds. These operating conditions introduce complex phenomena like flow transition and separation within the boundary layer that significantly alter their aerodynamic as well as aeroacoustic performance. The current work proposes a novel transition turbulence model that improves prediction of these complex boundary layer mechanisms in low-$Re$ propellers compared to the state-of-the-art. Furthermore, this work establishes a fast broadband noise prediction method by leveraging the detailed flow data from the transition model. The focus of this method is on modeling those propeller noise sources that are directly influenced by the aforementioned boundary layer phenomena (blade self-noise). The noise prediction study revealed that transition models yield consistent predictions across different operating conditions. Finally, a brief design study is conducted using the proposed aerodynamic and acoustic framework to assess the flow dynamics and possible noise mitigation capabilities of a swept propeller.

Hot-Wire Anemometer for the Boundary Layer Data SystemNeumeister, William D 01 July 2012 (has links)
Hot-wire anemometry has been routinely employed for laboratory measurements of turbulence for decades. This thesis presents a hot-wire anemometer suitable for use with the Boundary Layer Data System (BLDS). BLDS provides a unique platform for in- flight measurements because of its small, self-contained, robust design and flexible architecture. Addition of a hot-wire anemometer would provide BLDS with a sensor that could directly measure flow velocity fluctuations caused by turbulence. Hot-wires are commonly operated in constant-temperature mode for high frequency response, but require a carefully tuned bridge. The constant-voltage anemometer (CVA) uses a simple op-amp circuit to improve frequency response over constant-current operation. Due to its balance between ease of operation and performance, a CVA system built for this project was tested with a 3.8 micron diameter, platinum-coated tungsten probe. The CVA was calibrated in a steady jet and a power-law curve fit accurately represented the calibration data. The CVA successfully measured velocity fluctuations in a turbulent jet, as well as in laminar and tripped turbulent boundary layers over a flat plate in a 110 MPH wind tunnel. CVA frequency response was investigated using a thermal/electrical model, controlled oscillation in a steady flow, and with a square wave test; these three methods showed agreement. The CVA is selected for integration with BLDS.

Investigation of Transition and Vortex Systems of a Dynamically Pitching Airfoil Under the Free-stream Turbulence ConditionsJanuary 2017 (has links)
abstract: The effect of reduced frequency on dynamic stall behavior of a pitching NACA0012 airfoil in a turbulent wake using Direct Numerical Simulations is presented in the current study. Upstream turbulence with dynamically oscillating blades and airfoils is associated with ambient flow unsteadiness and is encountered in many operating conditions. Wake turbulence, a more realistic scenario for airfoils in operation, is generated using a small solid cylinder placed upstream, the vortices shed from which interact with the pitching airfoil affecting dynamic stall behavior.
A recently developed moving overlapping grid approach is used using a high-order Spectral Element Method (SEM) for spatial discretization combined with a dynamic time-stepping procedure allowing for up to third order temporal discretization. Two cases of reduced frequency (k = 0:16 and 0:25) for airfoil oscillation are investigated and the change in dynamic stall behavior with change in reduced frequency is studied and documented using flow-fields and aerodynamic coefficients (Drag, Lift and Pitching Moment) with a focus on understanding vortex system dynamics (including formation of secondary vortices) for different reduced frequencies and it’s affect on airfoil aerodynamic characteristics and fatigue life. Transition of the flow over the surface of an airfoil for both undisturbed and disturbed flow cases will also be discussed using Pressure coefficient and Skin Friction coefficient data for a given cycle combined with a wavelet analysis using Morse wavelets in MATLAB. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Mechanical Engineering 2017

Instabilities In Supersonic Couette FlowMalik, M 06 1900 (has links)
Compressible plane Couette flow is studied with superposed small perturbations. The steady mean flow is characterized by a non-uniform shear-rate and a varying temperature across the wall-normal direction for an appropriate perfect gas model. The studies are broadly into four main categories as said briefly below.
Nonmodal transient growth studies and estimation of optimal perturbations have been made. The maximum amplification of perturbation energy over time, G max, is found to increase with Reynolds number Re, but decreases with Mach number M. More specifically, the optimal energy amplification Gopt (the supremum of G max over both the streamwise and spanwise wavenumbers) is maximum in the incompressible limit and decreases monotonically as M increases. The corresponding optimal streamwise wavenumber, αopt, is non-zero at M = 0, increases with increasing M, reaching a maximum for some value of M and then decreases, eventually becoming zero at high Mach numbers. While the pure streamwise vortices are the optimal patterns at high Mach numbers (in contrast to incompressible Couette flow), the modulated streamwise vortices are the optimal patterns for low-to-moderate values of the Mach number. Unlike in incompressible shear flows, the streamwise-independent modes in the present flow do not follow the scaling law G(t/Re) ~ Re2, the reasons for which are shown to be tied to the dominance of some terms (related to density and temperature fluctuations) in the linear stability operator. Based on a detailed nonmodal energy anlaysis, we show that the transient energy growth occurs due to the transfer of energy from the mean flow to perturbations via an inviscid algebraic instability. The decrease of transient growth with increasing Mach number is also shown to be tied to the decrease in the energy transferred from the mean flow (E1) in the same limit. The sharp decay of the viscous eigenfunctions with increasing Mach number is responsible for the decrease of E1 for the present mean flow.
Linear stability and the non-modal transient energy growth in compressible plane Couette flow are investigated for the uniform shear flow with constant viscosity. For a given M, the critical Reynolds number (Re), the dominant instability (over all stream-wise wavenumbers, α) of each mean flow belongs different modes for a range of supersonic M. An analysis of perturbation energy reveals that the instability is primarily caused by an excess transfer of energy from mean-flow to perturbations. It is shown that the energy-transfer from mean-flow occurs close to the moving top-wall for “mode I” instability, whereas it occurs in the bulk of the flow domain for “mode II”.For the Non-modal transient growth anlaysis, it is shown that the maximum temporal amplification of perturbation energy, G max,, and the corresponding time-scale are significantly larger for the uniform shear case compared to those for its non-uniform counterpart. For α = 0, the linear stability operator can be partitioned into L ~ L ¯ L +Re2Lp is shown to have a negligibly small contribution to perturbation energy which is responsible for the validity of the well-known quadratic-scaling law in uniform shear flow: G(t/Re) ~ Re2 . In contrast , the dominance of Lp is responsible for the invalidity of this scaling-law in non-uniform shear flow. An inviscid reduced model, based on Ellignsen-Palm-type solution, has been shown to capture all salient features of transient energy growth of full viscous problem. For both modal and non-modal instability, the viscosity-stratification of the underlying mean flow would lead to a delayed transition in compressible Couette flow.
Modal and nonmodal spatial growths of perturbations in compressible plane Couette flow are studied. The modal instability at a chosen set of parameters is caused by the scond least-decaying mode in the otherwise stable parameter setting. The eigenfunction is accurately computed using a three-domain spectral collocation method, and an anlysis of the energy contained in the least-decaying mode reveals that the instability is due to the work by the pressure fluctuations and an increased transfer of energy from mean flow. In the case of oblique modes the stability at higher spanwise wave number is due to higher thermal diffusion rate. At high frequency range there are disjoint regions of instability at chosen Reynolds number and Mach number. The stability characteristics in the inviscid limit is also presented. The increase in Mach number and frequency is found to further destabilize the unstable modes for the case of two-dimensional(2D) perturbations. The behaviors of the non-inflexional neutral modes are found to be similar to that of compressible boundary layer. A leading order viscous correction to the inviscid solution reveals that the neutral and unstable modes are destabilized by the no-slip enforced by viscosity. The viscosity has a dual role on the stable inviscid mode. A spatial transient growth studies have been performed and it is found that the transient amplification is of the order of Reynolds number for a superposition of stationary modes. The optimal perturbations are similar to the streamwise invariant perturbations in the temporal setting. Ellignsen & Palm solution for the spatial algebraic growth of stationary inviscid perturbation has been derived and found to agree well with the transient growth of viscous counterpart. This inviscid solution captures the features of streamwise vortices and streaks, which are observed as optimal viscous perturbations.
The temporal secondary instability of most-unstable primary wave is also studied. The secondary growth-rate is many fold higher when compared with that of primary wave and found to be phase-locked. The fundamental mode is more unstable than subharmonic or detuned modes. The secondary growth is studied by varying the parameters such as β, Re, M and the detuning parameter.
