Dieter Kober: (* 1920, † 2015): Der Weg vom Ritchie-Boy zum Musikdirektor und Dirigenten des Chicago Chamber Orchestra

Dieter Kober (* 2. Jan. 1920 Halberstadt; † 1. Okt. 2015 Radebeul / Dresden) gehört mit seinem ungewöhnlichen Lebenslauf zwischen zwei unterschiedlichen Welten und seiner Lebensleistung als Musiker, Musikpädagoge, Musikdirektor und Dirigent mit zu den bemerkenswertesten Persönlichkeiten, die inmitten der Kluft einer zerrissenen politischen Welt während und nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg agierten und ihre Spuren hinterließen. Sein Leben bestand zum einen ganz unter dem Trauma von Flucht, Emigration, Kampf in der US-Armee gegen Hitler-Deutschland stehend, zum anderen war es geprägt durch eine Karriere als Musikdirektor und Dirigent. Mit seinem 1952 von ihm gegründeten Chicago Chamber Orchester (CCO) verstand er es, durch Musikdarbietungen in den USA und auf Tourneen durch Europa und Asien, Brücken der Völkerverständigung zu bauen. In Chicago stieg er zum Musikdirektor und Dirigenten auf. Prof. Dr. Dieter Kober war der am längsten amtierend gewesene Musikdirektor in den USA. Die Familie Kober war nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg, als Angehörige der deutsch-jüdischen Bevölkerungsschicht, aus der preußischen Provinz Posen (Poznań / Polen) geflüchtet, nachdem mit dem Großpolnischen Aufstand im Dezember 1918 Repressalien gegen die deutsche und jüdische Bevölkerung einsetzten. Nach seinem Realschulabschluss verließ Dieter Kober Deutschland und emigrierte in die USA. So erhielt als 16-jähriger ein Erlaubnisvisum nach New York City. Da er noch keine amerikanische Staatsbürgerschaft besaß, erhielt er keine Zulassung zur Aufnahme in das City College of New York und wechselte in den Bundesstaat Nebraska, an die University of Nebraska - Lincoln. Obwohl noch ohne amerikanische Staatsbürgerschaft, wurde er als Student in das staatliche Förderprogramm der Army ROTC (Reserve Offizier Training Corps) an der Universität aufgenommen und in militärwissenschaftlichen Kursen und Führungstrainingslabors für einen Einsatz in der US-Armee vorbereitet. Nach Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkrieges erfolgte seine Grundausbildung im Camp Kearns in Utah in der Army Air Forces Base. Nach seinem erfolgversprechenden IQ-Test kam er zur weiteren Spezialausbildung in das geheime Trainingslager des Militärgeheimdienstes nach Camp Ritchie im Bundesstaat Maryland, wo sie für die Vernehmung von hochrangigen Häftlingen oder für die Spionageabwehr in Europa ausgebildet wurden. Hier erhielt er im Trainingscenter eine Spezialausbildung und wurde Teil einer geheimen Einheit des Militärnachrichtendienstes, die überwiegend aus deutsch-jüdischen und österreichischen Emigranten zusammengestellt worden war, die später als Ritchie Boys bezeichnet wurden. Er wurde Spezialist des Militärnachrichtendienstes und in den Stützpunkt Fort Hunt in Virginia verlegt (Geheimer Codenamen „P.O. Box 1142“ / Post Office Box 1142). Als Teamleiter des US-Militärgeheimdienstes MIS Y waren er mit teilweise bis zu 40 Mitarbeitern direkt dem Pentagon unterstellt. Die ehemaligen sogenannten Ritchie Boys erhielten nach Kriegsende großzügige staatliche Förderungen. Kober ging an das Musik Conservatory des Chicago College of Performing Arts (CCPA) der Roosevelt University, wo er Musikwissenschaft und Dirigat studierte. Zurückgekehrt an die University of Chicago, gründete er 1952 ein erstes Streicherensemble als Laienorchester für Kammermusik, das Chicago Chamber Orchestra (CCO). 1957 erhielt er die Berufung zum Musikdirektor des Art Institute of Chicago. Große Popularität erreichte Dieter Kober ab 1959 mit der Produktion und Moderation der TV-Sendung „Einladung zur Musik“ im Chicago-Bildungsfernsehen. Ab 1975 wurde er auf dem klassischen Radiosender von Bruce Duffie „WNIB / Classical 97 Chicago“ auch zu einer Radiopersönlichkeit und gestaltete monatliche Sendungen für „Musik des Kammerorchesters“. Kober sah es als seinen Kulturauftrag an, jedem das Recht auf kulturelle Bildung und eine nachhaltige Entwicklung zu ermöglichen, und ermöglichte auch kostenlose Besuche seiner Konzerte. Nach seiner zweiten Eheschließung verlegte er seinen Wohnsitz von Chicago Lakeshore Drive nach Radebeul und richtete in seinem Haus das Büro für das CCO ein. Von hier aus organisierte Dieter Kober nun das Management für das Ensemble des CCO. Nach Chicago kam er zumeist nur noch zum Dirigieren von Konzerten und für Vertragsunterzeichnungen. Anlässlich seines 90. Geburtstages 2010 dirigierte Dieter Kober in der Preston Bradley Hall im Chicago Cultural Center nochmals ein großes, für die Öffentlichkeit zugängliches kostenloses Konzert. Am 12. Mai 2013 übergab Dieter Kober im Alter von 93 Jahren und nach 61-jährigem Wirken als Musikdirektor den Taktstock nach einem letzten großen Abschiedskonzert in der Fourth Presbyterian Church an seinen Nachfolger Robert Turizziani. Dieter Kober verstarb am 1. Oktober 2015 in Radebeul bei Dresden im Alter von 95 Jahren. Use of floral resources by the lacewing Micromus tasmaniae and its parasitoid Anacharis zealandica, and the consequences for biological control by M. tasmaniae

Arthropod species that have the potential to damage crops are food resources for communities of predators and parasitoids. From an agronomic perspective these species are pests and biocontrol agents respectively, and the relationships between them can be important determinants of crop yield and quality. The impact of biocontrol agents on pest populations may depend on the availability of other food resources in the agroecosystem. A scarcity of such resources may limit biological control and altering agroecosystem management to alleviate this limitation could contribute to pest management. This is a tactic of ‘conservation biological control’ and includes the provision of flowers for species that consume prey as larvae but require floral resources in their adult stage. The use of flowers for pest management requires an understanding of the interactions between the flowers, pests, biocontrol agents and non-target species. Without this, attempts to enhance biological control might be ineffective or detrimental. This thesis develops our understanding in two areas which have received relatively little attention: the role of flowers in biological control by true omnivores, and the implications of flower use by fourth-trophic-level life-history omnivores. The species studied were the lacewing Micromus tasmaniae and its parasitoid Anacharis zealandica. Buckwheat flowers Fagopyrum esculentum provided floral resources and aphids Acyrthosiphon pisum served as prey. Laboratory experiments with M. tasmaniae demonstrated that although prey were required for reproduction, providing flowers increased survival and oviposition when prey abundance was low. Flowers also decreased prey consumption by the adult lacewings. These experiments therefore revealed the potential for flowers to either enhance or disrupt biological control by M. tasmaniae. Adult M. tasmaniae were collected from a crop containing a strip of flowers. Analyses to determine the presence of prey and pollen in their digestive tracts suggested that predation was more frequent than foraging in flowers. It was concluded that the flower strip probably did not affect biological control by lacewings in that field, but flowers could be significant in other situations. The lifetime fecundity of A. zealandica was greatly increased by the presence of flowers in the laboratory. Providing flowers therefore has the potential to increase parasitism of M. tasmaniae and so disrupt biological control. A. zealandica was also studied in a crop containing a flower strip. Rubidium-marking was used to investigate nectar-feeding and dispersal from the flowers. In addition, the parasitoids’ sugar compositions were determined by HPLC and used to infer feeding histories. Although further work is required to develop the use of these techniques in this system, the results suggested that A. zealandica did not exploit the flower strip. The sugar profiles suggested that honeydew had been consumed by many of the parasitoids. A simulation model was developed to explore the dynamics of aphid, lacewing and parasitoid populations with and without flowers. This suggested that if M. tasmaniae and A. zealandica responded to flowers as in the laboratory, flowers would only have a small effect on biological control within a single period of a lucerne cutting cycle. When parasitoids were present, the direct beneficial effect of flowers on the lacewing population was outweighed by increased parasitism, reducing the potential for biological control in future crops. The results presented in this thesis exemplify the complex interactions that may occur as a consequence of providing floral resources in agroecosystems and re-affirm the need for agroecology to inform the development of sustainable pest management techniques.

Reconocimiento de gestos corporales, utilizando procesamiento digital de imágenes para activar sistema de alarma

La investigación realizada a los sistemas de seguridad electrónica de edificios, plantea como objetivo principal el reconocimiento de tres gestos de un lenguaje corporal del personal de vigilancia, y la consecuente activación de alarma en forma automática. Inicialmente se realizó una encuesta dirigida a las administraciones y personal de edificios, para saber cuales eran las ocurrencias que vulneraban la seguridad de un edificio multifamiliar, luego se observaron y analizaron las imágenes capturadas por una cámara de vigilancia ubicada en la recepción, identificando las ocurrencias más vulnerables y gestos asociados a dichos eventos; se seleccionaron tres gestos que en forma inconsciente realizaba el personal de vigilancia ante dichas situaciones. A determinados cuadros que comprenden estas imágenes se le aplicaron técnicas de procesamiento espacial, con ayuda de una iluminación artificial que era más intensa en la parte posterior del sujeto de análisis, consiguiéndose la definición de una silueta binarizada en el entorno Matlab, técnicas como selección del plano rojo, plano de bits más significativo, invertir imagen y transformaciones morfológicas tipo cerradura, definieron una silueta que ayudó a desarrollar un algoritmo matemático para generar una señal eléctrica en el puerto serial USB del ordenador, donde se conectó físicamente una plataforma de hardware Arduino que activa la alarma. La elección de esta plataforma se debió a que Matlab cuenta con un grupo de instrucciones para Arduino, con el objetivo de lograr una comunicación sincronizada entre ordenador e interface. Las técnicas utilizadas reconocieron 62,5% de los eventos descritos en las encuestas realizadas y que no son mencionadas en temas de investigación similar. Para lograr el objetivo fue necesario analizar un cuadro por segundo. The research poses as their main objective the three gestures recognition of a body language of surveillance personnel and the consequent activation of alarm automatically. It was initially carried out a survey of the administration and the offices of the buildings to know which were the occurrences that violate the security of a multi-family building, then were observed and analyzed images captured by a surveillance camera located in the reception, identifying the most vulnerable occurrences and gestures associated with these events; were selected three gestures that unconsciously performs surveillance personnel before such situations; to certain pictures that comprise these images were applied spatial processing techniques, with the help of an artificial lighting that was more intense in the back of the subject of analysis, getting the definition of a silhouette binarized in the Matlab environment, techniques such as plane selection red, more significant bit plane, to invest an image and convolution close type, defined a silhouette that allowed to develop a mathematical algorithm that generated an electrical signal in USB serial port of the computer, where it is physically connected a hardware platform Arduino that active the alarm.This platform choice is due to the fact that Matlab has a group of instructions for Arduino, achieving an orderly communication between computer and interface. The techniques used recognized 62.5 % of the events described in the surveys carried out and which aren’t mentioned in similar research topics. To achieve the objective was necessary to analyze a picture per second.

The end goal of the research was to draw conclusions on the relationship dynamics (magnitude and direction) between the constructs for the purpose of proposing organisational career development practices for the knowledge worker. A quantitative cross-sectional research approach was followed and involved a sample of N = 404 knowledge workers registered with South African professional bodies. Descriptive, correlation and multivariate inferential statistics were performed. Supplementary to the canonical correlation analysis, regression and structural equation modelling analysis indicated that the career satisfaction profile has unique influencing factors while the self-perceived employability profile also has its unique influencing factors. Moderated regression analysis showed that individuals’ career cognitions (i.e. levels of career adaptability and psychosocial career preoccupations) were not conditional upon their psychosocial career resources (i.e. employability attributes, career anchors and career values) in explaining their levels of career satisfaction and self-perceived employability. The career cognitions and psychosocial career resources had individually specific main effects to consider in understanding knowledge workers’ career satisfaction and self-perceived employability. Stepwise regression and the hierarchical moderated regression analysis showed that age, race and employment status were important to consider in terms of the career satisfaction profile of knowledge workers. Race seemed especially important to consider in terms of their self-perceived employability. Differences among the biographical groups also suggested unique career development needs to consider in multi-culturally diverse work contexts. The career satisfaction and employability profile was constructed based on the key insights derived from the core significant findings. The research extended career satisfaction and employability theory. Recommendations for organisational career development support practice were made based on the proposed profile for the professional knowledge worker. / Psychology / Ph. D. (Psychology)

La tesi si concentra sul Partito Nazionalista Cinese negli anni Venti come punto privilegiato di osservazione del cambiamento politico della Cina dopo la Prima guerra mondiale. Questo decennio rappresentò un momento di definizione identitaria sia per i comunisti sia per i nazionalisti. La storiografia ne ha sottolineato numerosi aspetti, ma si è finora occupata del periodo 1919-1928 come una preistoria degli anni Trenta piuttosto che come un autonomo segmento di storia cinese. Studi recenti hanno superato implicitamente questo approccio criticando due date periodizzanti fondamentali per il Novecento cinese: la nascita della Repubblica nazionalista (1911) e la nascita della Repubblica Popolare (1949). A metà tra queste due date, gli anni Venti sono emersi come snodo decisivo nel passaggio da impero a Stato nazionale, durante cui si definì un nuovo spazio di discussione politica. Questo processo, pur interno, subì l’influsso delle strategie internazionali di sovietici e statunitensi dando vita a una nuova visione non soltanto della rivoluzione ma anche dello Stato post-rivoluzionario. Le classi dirigenti nazionalista e comunista, durante la collaborazione, si rivelarono dinamiche e tale “competizione” si trasferì anche all’interno di ciascun movimento diventando un fattore determinante per il successo o il fallimento del partito inteso come moderna formazione politica. / The thesis focuses on the Chinese Nationalist Party in the 1920s as a special standpoint to analyze the political changes in China after the World War I. That decade was crucial for shaping the identity of nationalists and communists. Many works have already examined some aspects, but they mostly considered the years 1919-1928 as a pre-history of the Thirties rather than an autonomous part of Chinese history. Recent studies have overcome this approach by criticizing two of the main periodization in the Chinese twentieth century: the birth of the nationalist Republic (1911) and the birth of the People’s Republic (1949). Halfway, the 1920s stood out as a critical juncture in the transition from empire to nation-state. A new space of political discussion was defined. The process, albeit internal, was under the influence of the USSR and US international strategies and gave birth not only to a new vision of the revolution, but also to a vision of the post-revolutionary state. Also, the nationalist and communist leaderships turned out to be dynamic. That "competition" may be seen also within the two political movements and became a shaping factor for the success or failure of the party as a modern political formation.

Emploi de techniques de traitement de signal MIMO pour des applications dédiées réseaux de capteurs sans fil / Adaptive optimisation of MIMO Channel for Smart sensor networks

Dans ce travail de thèse, on s'intéresse é l'emploi de techniques de traitement de signal de systèmes de communication MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) pour des applications aux réseaux de capteurs sans fil. Les contraintes énergétiques de cette classe de réseau font appel à des topologies particulières et le réseau peut être perçu comme étant un ensemble de grappes de nœuds capteurs. Ceci ouvre la porte à des techniques avancées de communication de type MIMO. Dans un premier temps, les différents aspects caractérisant les réseaux de capteurs sans fil sont introduits. Puis, les efforts engagés pour optimiser la conservation de l'énergie dans ces réseaux sont résumés. Les concepts de base de systèmes MIMOs sont abordés dans le deuxième chapitre et l'exploration par voie numérique de différentes pistes de la technologie MIMO sont exposées. Nous nous intéressons à des techniques de diversité de polarisation dans le cadre de milieux de communication riches en diffuseurs. Par la suite, des méthodes de type beamforming sont proposées pour la localisation dans les réseaux de capteurs sans fil. Le nouvel algorithme de localisation est présenté et les performances sont évaluées. Nous identifions la configuration pour la communication inter-grappes qui permet pour les meilleurs compromis entre énergie et efficacité spectrale dans les réseaux de capteurs sans fil. Finalement, nous envisageons la technique de sélection de nœuds capteurs afin de réduire la consommation de l'énergie dans le réseau de capteur sans fil. / The aim of this work is to study from a signal processing point of view the use of MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) communication systems for algorithms dedicated to wireless sensor networks. We investigate energy-constrained wireless sensor networks and we focus on cluster topology of the network. This topology permits for the use of MIMO communication system model. First, we review different aspects that characterize the wireless sensor network. Then, we introduce the existing strategies for energy conservation in the network. The basic concepts of MIMO systems are presented in the second chapter and numerical results are provided for evaluating the performances of MIMO techniques. Of particular interest, polarization diversity over rich scattering environment is studied. Thereafter, beamforming approach is proposed for the development of an original localization algorithm in wireless sensor network. The novel algorithm is described and performances are evaluated by simulation. We determine the optimal system configuration between a pair of clusters that permits for the highest capacity to energy ratio in the fourth chapter. The final chapter is devoted to sensor nodes selection in wireless sensor network. The aim of using such technique is to make energy conservation in the network.
