O propósito deste estudo é de compreender como a frustração e o medo se expressam no cotidiano do trabalho de executivos financeiros que atuam em instituições financeiras. A partir das idéias, principalmente, de Bauman e Sennett, procurou-se verificar quais são as principais formas de manifestação da frustração e do medo no dia-a-dia destes profissionais e quais são os principais mecanismos de enfrentamento de tais sentimentos. A pesquisa exploratória foi realizada através de entrevistas guiadas pelo roteiro básico, onde os entrevistados puderam falar sobre suas experiências e percepções sobre o tema. As entrevistas foram realizadas com executivos financeiros de instituições financeiras localizadas no município de São Paulo. As frustrações relativas às atividades desempenhadas no trabalho, à falta de reconhecimento e ao sucesso alheio; e os medos relativos a perder o emprego, à condução dos negócios, à qualificação ou bagagem profissional, previstos pelos diversos autores que discutem o “mundo-líquido” em vigência atualmente, foram encontrados na realidade do trabalho bancário nem sempre compartilhada. As formas com que os executivos lidam com eles é que se mostrou imediata, intensa e ineficaz. / The purpose of this study is to comprehend how the frustration and the fear are expressed in the daily routine of senior executives who work for financial institutions. Mainly based on the ideas of Bauman and Sennett, it was seeked to verify which are the main manifestations of frustration and fear, and which are the main mechanisms used to face these feelings. The exploratory research was conducted through a guided interview, where the interviewees could share their experiences and perceptions about the subject. The interviews were conduct with professionals located in the city of São Paulo. The frustrations related to banking activities such as the performance in business, lack of recognition and third party success; and fears related to unemployment, qualification or past experience, predicted by several authors that discuss the current “liquid-world” have been found in the answers. The ways of facing these feelings presented themselves immediate, intense, but ineffective.

Recentemente, observamos na comunidade científica o despertar de um interesse pelo estudo de lantanídeos com base em titânio; neste ínterim, as amostras Sm2Ti2O7 e Nd2Ti2O7 se destacam por terem sido pouco exploradas, especialmente a baixas temperaturas. Análises cristalográficas de monocristais de Sm2Ti2O7 e Nd2Ti2O7 nos permitiram confirmar inicialmente características de rede como a geometria cúbica e monoclínica, respectivamente, enquanto as análises magnéticas e calorimétricas forneceram a temperatura de transição, até então inédita no caso do Nd2Ti2O7 (aproximadamente T=0,62K), além de ordenamento do tipo antiferromagnético e presença de anisotropia a altas temperaturas, na amostra de Sm2Ti2O7, e por toda a extensão de temperaturas trabalhadas, na amostra de Nd2Ti2O7. Por fim, identificamos também a entropia esperada para spins do tipo Ising em ambas as amostras. / Recently the scientific community has shown interest for titanium lanthanides, with the titanates Sm2Ti2O7 and Nd2Ti2O7 being poorly approached, specially at low temperatures. Crystallographic analysis were performed on the single crystal samples of Sm2Ti2O7 and Nd2Ti2O7, which allowed us to confirm its expected cubic and monoclinic structures, respectively; Magnetic and calorimetric data displayed the transition temperature, not previously seen in case of Nd2Ti2O7, of T=0.35K and T=0.62K, respectively, and the antiferromagnetic behaviour of both samples; Anisotropy was observed at high temperatures on the Sm2Ti2O7 data and along all the temperature range studied for the Nd2Ti2O7 sample. Finally, we have identified the entropy of Ising spins on both samples.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of two perturbations, the application of an external magnetic field and randomised chemical pressure through Ti4+/Sn4+ substitution, on the dynamic spin ice state in Pr2Sn2O7. We show through magnetometry, heat capacity and powder neutron diffraction that the dynamic spin ice state in Pr2Sn2O7 is extremely fragile, requiring an external field of approximately 0.5 T to induce a transition into a long range ordered antiferromagnetic state, in accordance with the recorded behaviour of other spin ice materials. Similarly, the dynamic spin ice state in Pr2Sn2O7 only required a doping percentage of less than 2.5% to induce a transition away from the spin ice state. But instead of the predicted spin glass state, Pr2Sn2O7 assumes a cluster-type magnetic structure with extremely weak intercluster antiferromagnetic interactions, a magnetic structure that persists even to the highest doping level of 30%. The results of this thesis reveals that careful attention must be taken when selecting and placing the tetravalent cation in the 16c Wyckoff site in the pyrochlore structure, if one desires to have a spin ice state. / October 2015

Complex oxides represent an intersection of play grounds for the existence of exciting new fundamental physics and materials with potential technological implications. The realization of many exciting properties of these systems rely on the coupling of electronic, structural and magnetic degrees of freedom. Additionally, competing interactions within each type of coupling discussed previously lead to theoretically diverse ground states, which under the application of an external perturbation, can be tuned and probed. Ca3Co¬2-xMnxO6 represent a quasi-one dimensional Ising spin chain system oriented in an antiferromagnetic triangular lattice. The exotic behavior of the undoped compound Ca3Co2O6 has inspired work on continuing the fundamental understanding of frustrated magnetic systems. Through chemical doping of Manganese ions, the magnetic properties, namely the exotic spin glass like behavior can be enhanced for a modest doping range of x The effects of particle dimensionality were probed through the application of varied calcining conditions as to attempt to observe the altering of magnetic properties, mainly the out of equilibrium magnetization plateaus observed in Ca3Co1.75 Mn0.25O6. It appears that within the particle sizes studied the magnetic behavior is highly robust, even considering the inclusion of ionic disorder.
