Oito blocos transportáveis para calibração foram construídos para serem utilizados como padrões de concentração na calibração de espectrômetros gama portáteis e aerotransportados. Todo o procedimento de construção é descrito em detalhe. Os blocos, com dimensões de 1 m x 1 m x 0,30 m e massas variando entre 593 kg e 673 kg, devem a sua radioatividade à adição de diferentes quantidades de feldspato potássico (ortoclásio), caldasito e areia monazítica à massa de concreto. As concentrações de potássio, urânio e tório variam significativamente de um bloco para outro atingindo valores máximos de 5,7% de K, 45,6 ppm eU e 137 ppm eTh. A distribuição do fluxo de radiação gama proveniente da superfície dos blocos de concreto e a magnitude das heterogeneidades na concentração dos elementos radioativos foi determinada experimentalmente. Como exemplo de aplicação apresenta-se o resultado da calibração de um espectrômetro gama portátil. / Eight transportable calibration pads were built in to be used as concentration standards for portable and airborne gamma spectrometers calibrations. The pads construction procedure is described in full detail. The pads, with dimensions of 1 m x 1 m x 0,30 m and masses between 593 kg and 673 kg were made radioactive by the addition of different amounts of k-feldspar, caldasite and monazitic sand to the concrete masses. The potassium, uranium and thorium concentration vary significantly in the pads, reaching maximum values of 5,7% of K, 45,6 ppm eU and 137 ppm eTh. The distribution of the gamma radiation flux from the pads surfaces and the heterogeneity magnitudes of the radioactive elements concentration were experimentally established. An example of gamma spectrometer calibration is presented.

O presente trabalho tem o objetivo principal de compreender os possíveis efeitos da radiação energética de um evento de Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) sobre o meio interestelar no entorno de seu local de geração e em planetas possivelmente iluminados. Gamma-Ray Bursts foram detectados pela primeira vez nos anos 60 e rapidamente atraíram a atenção da comunidade astrofísica, uma vez que as energias emitidas apenas em poderiam alcançar 1054erg, o equivalente a massa de repouso do Sol. Não se conhecia nenhum mecanismo tão eficiente para extrair energia gravitacional para produzir tal evento. Mais tarde, a possibilidade da emissão ser colimada abaixou a energia em para 5x1050erg, mas o mecanismo central de geração ainda não foi completamente desvendado, havendo muito espaço para alternativas exóticas. Estudamos os efeitos de um GRB sobre o meio interestelar, em uma tentativa de distinguir os remanescentes do GRB do gerado por múltiplas supernovas. Usamos argumentos energéticos e sobre a possibilidade de alterações químicas e isotópicas devido a reações fotonucleares. Também trabalhamos com as implicações biológicas da iluminação de planetas por um GRB, concluindo que os efeitos de tais eventos podem afetar seriamente a biosfera de um planeta mesmo a distâncias de ~10kpc. / The present work has the main goal of understanding the possible effects of the hard gamma radiation produced during a Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) event both on the interstellar medium surrounding the source of the burst and on planets possibly illuminated. Gamma-Ray Bursts were first detected on the 60s and quickly have attracted the attention of the astrophysical community, since the energies emitted just in could reach 1054erg, the rest mass of the Sun. No mechanism was known to be so efficient in extracting gravitational energy to produce such emission. Later on, the possibility of the emission being collimated has lowered the energy of the to 5x1051erg, but the central engine has not yet been completely understood, and there is still ample room for exotic alternatives. We have studied the effects of GRB on the ISM, in an attempt to distinguish the candidates of GRB remnants from those generated by multiple supernovae. We have used both energetic arguments and the possibility of chemical alterations due to photonuclear reactions. We have also worked on the biological implications of the illumination of planets by a GRB, concluding that the effects of such event could seriously harm the biosphere of a planet even at distances of ~10kpc.

Um detetor HPGe foi calibrado na faixa de energia 4 a 10 MeV usando fótons provenientes do decaimento do produto da reação 27Al(p, g)28Si em linha, observando as ressonâncias com prótons de energias 992 e 1317 keV. Foram feitas calibrações de energia e eficiência de deteção de fótons e foi analisada a dependência da largura a meia altura dos picos com a meia vida do estado inicial e a energia da transição. Os efeitos do produto da reação estar em movimento, como o efeito Doppler no decaimento em vôo, perda de velocidade do núcleo ao recuar dentro do alvo e energia de recuo são importantes na calibração de energia e análise da largura do pico. A calibração da eficiência depende de outras calibrações: razão entre a área dos picos de absorção total de energia, escapes simples e duplo dos gamas de aniquilação; razão entre a área total do espectro pela área do pico. Os resultados experimentais foram comparados com simulações do espectro usando o código MCNP, sendo que as dimensões internas do detetor, inacessíveis para medição, foram escolhidas de modo a reproduzir parâmetros deduzidos de espectros gama experimentais. A simulação se mostrou capaz de descrever tanto a eficiência para absorção total de energia quanto a razão entre as áreas dos picos de absorção total de energia, escape simples e duplo do gama de aniquilação, mas não foi capaz de descrever a razão entre a área total do espectro e a do pico. / An HPGe detector was calibrated in the 4 to 10 MeV energy range using photons from the decay of the 992 and 1317 keV proton resonances in the reaction 27Al(p, g)28Si on-line. Energy and photon detection efficiencies were calibrated and the dependence of the peak full width at half maximum on the transition energy and initial level half-life was analyzed. The effects of the reaction product motion, like Doppler shift due to in-flight decay, slowing down in the target, and nuclear recoil energy from photon emission, are important for energy calibration and peak width analyses. The efficiency calibration required other calibrations: the full energy peak to single and double escape counting ratios, and total spectrum to peak areas ratio. The experimental results were compared to simulations with MCNP code, where internal detector dimensions, inaccessible to measurement, were chosen in order to fit the experimental gamma spectrum parameters. The simulation was able to explain the full energy peak to single escape and double escape counting ratios, and full-energy peak detection efficiency, but was unable to fit the total spectrum to peak areas ratio.

Cosmological Dark Matter and the Isotropic Gamma-Ray Background : Measurements and Upper Limits

This thesis addresses the isotropic diffuse gamma-ray background, as measured by the Fermi gamma ray space telescope, and its implications for indirect detection of dark matter. We describe the measurement of the isotropic background, including also an alternative analysis method besides the one published by the Fermi-LAT collaboration. The measured isotropic diffuse background is compatible with a power law differential energy spectrum with a spectral index of  -2.41 ± 0.05 and -2.39 ± 0.08, for the two analysis methods respectively. This is a softer spectrum than previously reported by the EGRET experiment. This rules out any dominant contribution with a significantly different shape, e.g. from dark matter, in the energy range 20 MeV to 102.4 GeV. Instead we present upper limits on a signal originating from annihilating dark matter of extragalactic origin. The uncertainty in the dark matter signal is primarily dependent on the cosmological evolution of the dark matter distribution. We use recent N-body simulations of structure formation, as well as a semi-analytical calculation, to assess this uncertainty. We investigate three main annihilation channels and find that in some, but not in all, of our scenarios we can start to probe, and sometimes rule out, interesting parameter spaces of particle physics models beyond the standard model.We also investigate the possibility to use the angular anisotropies of the annihilation signal to separate it from a background originating from conventional sources, e.g. from active galactic nuclei. By carefully modelling the performance of the Fermi gamma-ray space telescope and galactic foregrounds we find that this method could be as sensitive as using information from the energy spectrum only. / <p>At the time of the doctoral defense, the following papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 4: Manuscript.</p>

The characterization and temporal distribution of cosmological gravitational wave treatments

[Truncated abstract] As gravitational wave detectors approach sensitivities that will allow observations to become routine, astrophysics lies on the cusp of an exciting new era. Potential sources will include transients such as merging neutron stars and black holes, supernova explosions or the engines that power gamma-ray bursts. This thesis will be devoted to the astrophysical gravitational wave background signal produced by cosmological populations of such transient signals. Particular attention will be devoted to the observation-time dependence imposed on the individual sources that accumulate to produce a gravitational wave background signal. The ultimate aim is to determine what information is encoded in the temporal evolution of such a signal. To lay the foundations for further investigation, the stochastic gravitational wave background signal from neutron star birth throughout the Universe has been calculated. In view of the uncertainties in both the single-source emissions and source rate histories, several models of each are employed. The results show that that the resulting signals are only weakly dependent on the source-rate evolution model and that prominent features in the single-source spectra can be related to the background spectra. In comparison with previous studies, the use of relativistic single-source gravitational wave waveforms rather than Newtonian models and a more slowly evolving source-rate density results in a 1 { 2 order of magnitude reduction in signal. ... A comparison with the more commonly used brightness distribution of events shows that when applying both methods to a data stream containing a background of Gaussian distributed false alarms, the brightness distribution yielded lower standard errors, but was biased by the false alarms. In comparison, a fitting procedure based on the time evolution of events was less prone to errors resulting from false alarms, but as fewer events contributed to the data, had a lower resolution. In further support of the time dependent signature of transient events, an alternative technique is fiapplied to the same source population. In this case, the local rate density is probed by measuring the statistical compatibility of the filtered data against synthetic time dependent data. Although this method is not as compact as the fitting procedure, the rate estimates are compatible. To further investigate how the observation time dependence of transient populations can be used to constrain global parameters, the method is applied to Swift long gamma-ray burst data. By considering a distribution in peak °ux rather than a gravitational wave amplitude, gamma-ray bursts can be considered as a surrogate for resolved gravitational wave transients. For this application a peak °ux{observation time relation is described that takes the form of a power law that is invariant to the luminosity distribution of the sources. Additionally, the method is enhanced by invoking time reversal invariance and the temporal cosmological principle. Results are presented to show that the peak °ux{observation time relation is in good agreement with recent estimates of source parameters. Additionally, to show that the intrinsic time dependence allows the method to be used as a predictive tool, projections are made to determine the upper limits in peak °ux of future gamma-ray burst detections for Swift.

Origin Of The Extragalactic Gamma-Ray Background

It is evident that the origin of EGRB is not well established. In this thesis I examine the unresolved discrete origin of EGRB. The contribution from normal galaxies, starburst galaxies and AGNs to the EGRB is examined. The second chapter includes the methodology used to find the contributions from different source classes. In the third chapter the contribution from normal and starburst galaxies is discussed. A methodology is developed to derive the contribution from normal and starburst galaxies to the EGRB considering all the major γ-ray production processes in these galaxies. The calculations in this thesis consider the detailed γ-ray measurements of our galaxy(Hunter etal.1997) to derive suitable scaling relations to extend the analysis beyond the Milky Way. It is assumed that all normal and starburst galaxies also have similar γ-ray spectra. A relationship is derived between the γ-ray luminosity and SFR of a normal galaxy. Infrared luminosity of a normal galaxy is used as a tracer of SFR of that galaxy (Kewley et al.2002). For starburst galaxies, the contribution depends on the relative ratio(β)of cosmic-ray enhancement per SFR w.r.t the Milky Way. To find the proportionality constants between cosmic-ray production rate and SFR of starburst galaxies, M82 has been taken as a standard. Contribution from FSRQs and BL Lacs to the EGRB is discussed in the fourth chapter. FSRQs and BL Lacs are considered as separate source classes, and their luminosity functions are constructed separately from the recent identifications of EGRET sources(Sowards-Emmerd,Romani&Michelson2003 and Sowards-Emmerd et al.2004) which almost doubled the blazers count than that used by Chiang & Mukher-jee(1998). Radio-loud AGNs with all possible jet to line-of-sight angle (SSRQs, FR IIs, FR Is) are termed here off-axis AGNs. It is considered that SSRQs and FSRQs and FR IIs are from one parent population, BL Lacs and FR Is are from another parent population. The scenario considered includes an AGN jet which slows down as it moves away from the central source. The contributions from these AGNs (relative to the FSRQs and BL Lacs contribution) are discussed in chapter five. Chapter six briefly summarised the findings from the thesis.
