The Influence of Advertisement Music on Gender Identity and Sex Stereotyping in Young Girls

Pelos, Ellen S 01 January 2016 (has links)
This paper proposes a study that investigates whether manipulating pitch and tempo in children’s toy advertisement music has an effect on gender identity and sex stereotyping in preschool-aged girls. This particular intersection between advertisement, persuasion, gender identity, and sex stereotyping scholarship has not yet been explored. However, past research does suggest that high pitch and fast tempo have a significant positive impact on mood and arousal, two factors associated with more susceptibility to persuasive messages. The 3- to 4-year-old female participants will be randomly assigned to one of the nine advertisement conditions. The music in the ads for each condition will contain a combination of pitch variation (high, medium, or low pitch) as well as a tempo variation (fast, medium, or slow tempo) to create a fully-crossed design. The dependent variables, gender identity and sex stereotyping, will be measured in the lab before and after a 2-week period in which the the advertisement stimuli will be presented in the children’s homes. Based on previous research, higher pitch and faster tempo are expected to be associated with more stereotypical gender identity and more sex stereotyping in participants.

This dissertation is grounded on recent theories about Female Bildungsroman or novels of education in a feminist perspective. It aims at establishing the relationship between space and the novel of education in the novel The Wives of Bath, published in 1993 by the Canadian author Susan Swan. The novel, revealing its intertextual aspect by its title, focuses on shedding a light on how the space – a girls’ boarding school on the outskirts of Toronto – symbolically represented by the attic and the basement is essential to build a female formation process subverting the traditional genre itself. In the first chapter, life and work of Susan Swan are studied, as well as the novel and its critical reception. In the second chapter, the theories concerning spaces by Gaston Bachelard and Michel Foucault and also the theories on the female Bildungsromane are covered. The third chapter is focused on the analysis according to the relation observed between the spaces and the formative process of Mary Beatrice Bradford – the protagonist. At last but not least, the intention of this dissertation is to spread the power of literature as a way of evidencing the muting breaking of women in the formation of their feminine identities

Uma reflexão sobre a formação da identidade feminina em mulheres vítimas de violência doméstica / A reflection on the formation of female identity in women victims of domestic violence

Lima, Ana Paula Mallet [UNIFESP] 24 February 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Made available in DSpace on 2015-07-22T20:50:55Z (GMT). / Domestic violence against women in Brazil and the world is a matter of concern at the present time. This is a surprisingly contemporary phenomenon, although it has occurred throughout the history of mankind. Violence in relations between the two shows a dynamic of power and a kind of effect which are present in domination and submission characterized by the gender differences that can be seen to the extent that the internal division of roles is configured in rights and duties with privileges to one of the parties within the family environment. Work in human sciences has given us an understanding of the context of psychological damage involving women in situations of domestic violence, as well as the historical and social context that seem to point to a woman in need of mentors for those who have a condition of dependence and co – dependency. This dissertation, which is based on psychology combined with psychiatry, aims to investigate whether battered women had mothers mothers that were abused. We have investigated some aspects of female identity and motherhood that are related to the growth and training of women in situations of family violence, as well as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as it occurs in these cases. The methodology is the qualitative technique of a semi-structured script of questions that guide the research subjects. These were used as tools to diagnose whether or not there is PTSD and also its severity, and used for the presence of a history of abuse and trauma during childhood and adolescence of these women. The participants were patients in the outpatient clinic a facility for the treatment of violence. Also patients were referred from the Womens Police Unit, from a collection of survey data and from other author. Data analysis was based on the theoretical resources-historical and anthropological, as well as fundamentals of analytical psychology. The results showed that participants had a family structure based on episodes or in the context of violence, where the mother-daughter relationship is important in the transmission of gender inequality, and is considerably preconditioned with PTSD due to emotional problems from this violent environment in childhood. At the conclusion of this study, we arrived at the idea of this paper on the importance of the maternal role in the formation of female identity, since the mother carries the standard historical-social and cultural status of women and also a marked psychological the context of violence, sharing with her daughter, acting or receiving violence, directly or indirectly through the psychological, which is home to other forms of domestic violence. Through this framework, there is a structure prone to psycho trigger PTSD in adulthood their daughters, victims of domestic violence. / TEDE / BV UNIFESP: Teses e dissertações

Representation of gender and sexuality in Roman art, with particular reference to that of Roman Britain

Morelli, Angela R. January 2005 (has links)
The subject matter for this research is the representation of femininities and masculinities in Roman art with particular reference to that of Roman Britain. The study focuses on the visual presentation of gender for specific deities, personifications and figural images in funerary art; this includes concepts of sexuality that in some cases become entwined with the study of gender. I have endeavoured to demonstrate how socially constructed values add to the understandings of gender and Roman art. The first chapter concentrates on Roman concepts relating to masculinities and femininities, detailing how these are portrayed in visual culture. This entails the identification of gender markers in various forms including clothing (for example the toga and stola), jewellery (such as the bulla) and distinct objects (for instance, military paraphernalia, weaving combs and spinning equipment). Following this broad introduction to gender in Roman art, the study then centres on specific deities, commencing with Venus and Mars, then Diana and Apollo, and Minerva and Hercules - each one has a particular gender ascription. I examine these in terms of visual representation and how their specific femininities and masculinities were presented. Personifications and figural funerary art, respectively, are the following and final chapters of the research. The former deals with the use of personifications in Roman art and the latter with patronage and presentation of figural tombstones and inscriptions. Both chapters observe these issues with preference towards the demonstration of gender allocation and any undertones implicated.

The right to remain married : positioning homosexual-transsexual marriages under the South African Marriage Act 25 of 1961

Matthyse, Glenton Carlo January 2015 (has links)
Magister Legum - LLM / For many, the human rights which South Africa has been able to secure for LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex) people has been very progressive. However, with the conflation of sexual orientation and gender identity, the assumption of access to human rights for all within the LGBTI and society at large, has led to transsexual people not being able to claim their rights and assert their existence as human beings effectively within our constitutional democracy. Currently, there is a vacuum in South Africa's law of marriage based on its inability to accommodate spouses who married as a 'heterosexual' couple but where the one spouse subsequently undergoes gender affirmation, conforming the relationship to what is perceived as 'homosexual'. On account of this, the Department of Home Affairs are subjecting these couples to compulsory or forced divorces by refusing to have the transsexual spouse recognised within his or her affirmed gender on the marriage certificate. This means that the transsexual spouse either remains married under the Marriage Act and is subject to being recognised as his or her birth-sex, or submits to a compulsory or forced divorce in order to be recognised as his or her affirmed sex on a marriage certificate issued under the Civil Union Act upon them 'remarrying'. This thesis addresses the inequalities and inequities brought about by the Marriage Act. It investigates the history of marriages within South Africa that were prohibited based on characteristics such as race which people have no control over. It looks at how the State, through its departments, has imposed itself on the social relationships people formed subject to its legal terms and conditions. This thesis questions whether the State through its action is acting in a way that is administratively just. It argues that the successfulness of a divorce decree is dependent on at least one party voluntary applying for it. This presupposes the idea that whenever couples who are validly married are forced or compelled to divorce one another that this, in fact, cannot be seen as one of the valid ways in which to obtain a divorce decree legally. Before venturing into the legal aspect concerning this research topic, a theoretical framework will be advanced to position these couples in a greater social context. Subsequently, in order to establish the legal position of these couples, this thesis will draw on the current South African human rights discourse that has been developed by and for the LGBTI community, especially as it relates to the law of marriage. It will also establish the international and foreign human rights discourses that assert or, at least, seek to assert LGBTI human rights broadly. Ultimately, a constitutional analysis will be conducted to establish the position of these couples under the Marriage Act.

Salvador
