The Canon of Gufu in Qing dynasty

Chen, Shou-his 20 July 2006 (has links)
The research on fu and theory of fu seldom concerns Qing dynasty and it is still unknown what kind of fu is considered the great works in the mind of literary authors in Qing dynasty. This study discusses Gufu in Qing dynasty, following the definition made by literary critics at that time: Gufu represents all kinds of fu except lüfu¡]fu with a special rhyme scheme and other prosodic features¡^. Through anthologies and the analysis of the literature, this study attempts to find out the great writers and classic works of fu, which are called ¡§canons¡¨ by literary critics in Qing dynasty. In addition, a further attempt is made to restore the literary norm through the review of literature and subsequently to reasonably interpret this literary norm and phenomenon. The results show that literary critics in Qing dynasty think that fu originates from poetry and is a kind of ¡§genre criticism¡§. Further, on the basis of this viewpoint, the evaluation of Gufu, historical views on fu, and canons are raised by literary critics in Qing dynasty.

To deceive the receiver : A genre analysis of the electronic variety of Nigerian scam letters

Bredesjö Budge, Susanne January 2006 (has links)

This essay analyses fifty electronic Nigerian scam letters or spam in order to find out whether they can be considered a genre of their own according to Swales’ (1990) definition. It is comparing the Nigerian scam letters to sales promotion letters, as presented by Bhatia (1993). The functional moves Bhatia (1993) found in the sales promotion letters were applied to the Nigerian scam letters, and three functional moves unique for the scam letters were established. The functional moves specific to the Nigerian scam letters together with the scam letters’ compatibility with Swales’ (1990) definition of genre, give support for this essay’s argument that the Nigerian scam letters constitute a genre of their own.

Writing for publication in four disciplines : Insights into text and context

McGrath, Lisa January 2015 (has links)
Scholars globally are under increasing pressure to publish in international, highly-ranked, and usually English-language journals. This has created a need for insights into the evolving discourses, genres, and publication practices of disciplinary discourse communities. This thesis reports an exploration of textual and contextual facets of writing for publication in the academy. More specifically, the overarching aim was to investigate the relationship between discipline, and the rhetorical features, genres, languages and dissemination outlets used by scholars. The thesis comprises four qualitative studies, and employs a variety of methods to explore this relationship across four disciplines: anthropology, history, linguistics and pure mathematics. The results reveal some connections between epistemological characteristics of the disciplines investigated and scholars’ rhetorical choices. The structure of the research article in pure mathematics is shown to reflect the process of knowledge construction in the discipline, and patterns of self-mentions in anthropology and history articles are attributed to disciplinary methodology. Furthermore, insights into the relationship between discipline, and genre use, language selection, and access to publication outlets are obtained. The results reveal disciplinary differences in terms of scholars’ opportunities to publish in the local language and in English. Based on my findings, I argue that while discipline is a significant factor in understanding how scholars construct and disseminate their research-based writing, these practices are also subject to local, international and digital developments. As such, the relationship between discipline, genre, language and publication should be understood as dynamic. /
At the time of the doctoral defense, the following papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 1: In press. Sorting Through the Junk Box: Dickens's Objects and the Great Exhibition of 1851

Grounds, Audrey Raymi 01 January 2011 (has links)
In Bleak House , Dickens satirizes contemporary conditions in London in order to diagnose what he sees as social and industrial ills to prescribe a solution to the "Condition-of-England" question. Beginning with a review of the topicality in the novel, I use Dickens's personal letters, the text of Bleak House , and articles from Household Words to explain his contempt with the Great Exhibition, misguided philanthropy, and sanitary conditions, among others. Ultimately, it is his anathema to the Great Exhibition which drives both Dickens's plot and the issues he explores. Dickens's mockery of England is refracted and emphasized through his use of multiple genres. I seek to illuminate how the varieties of genres frame the plot trajectory as well as Dickens's subtle solution to London's problems. Using Michel Foucault's discussion of the discourse of discipline, I explain how Bleak House employs the Gothic novel, the Detective novel, and the Romance novel to influence the reader towards a more ordered and dutiful society. I end with an examination of the objects in the novel, concluding that objects symbolize not only characters' roles, but also their psyches.
