Prevailing over prejudice : a story of race, inequity, and education in Gonzales, Texas

Morowski, Deborah Lynn, 1959- 13 September 2012 (has links)
This dissertation traces the history of Edwards High School in Gonzales, Texas, from its origins in the late 1800s through its closure in 1965 and situates Edwards within the larger framework of secondary schooling for African-Americans in Texas. Although more than two hundred high schools for African-Americans existed in Texas for some period by 1947, little is known about these institutions, especially those located in small towns. Schooling for African-Americans following the Civil War was irregular and normally consisted only of elementary grades. As more schools became available, black students received an inequitable share of resources for their education and they did not share in the groundswell of high schools available to white students. Many of the high schools that became available to African-Americans during the first part of the twentieth century were located in urban areas. Little is known of the secondary institutions for African-Americans in the small towns of Texas. This study serves to recount the story of one such school. The study pays particular attention to the students, teachers, and curriculum of Edwards High School, focusing on the years between 1935 and 1965, the year the school closed due to desegregation. Archival materials provided information on student demographics, enrollment and attendance patterns, as well as student participation in activities. Oral history interviews offered a glimpse into the lived experience of those who attended Edwards High. Teachers’ certification records and salary data informed an understanding of Edwards High School’s faculty. The study sheds light on the relationship between teachers and students and between faculty and the larger African-American community in Gonzales. The curriculum of Edwards High changed over time. Changing state classification and accreditation standards provided the impetus for these changes. This examination of Edwards High School informs a greater understanding of secondary education for African-Americans in Texas. / text

DEVELOPMENT AND CONSTRUCT VALIDATION OF HOGAN’S RAW MODEL OF EMPLOYABILITY: THE WILLINGNESS TO WORK HARD COMPONENT

Gonzales, Amanda V 01 June 2017 (has links)
The following study attempted to operationalize the willingness to work hard component of Hogan’s RAW model of employability. Willingness to Work Hard, the W in the model, appears to be multi-faceted; a qualitative synthesis of themes suggests that the construct may be dispositional. I examined proactive personality by using the G ProACT scale to help understand the multi-dimensionality of Willingness to Work Hard. Taking initiative, rigidness, planning, and anticipating opportunities were the four subscales that emerged. The purpose of my study was to collect evidence of construct validity for the proposed measure. I examined the relationship between the G ProACT measure and discriminant and convergent variables. A survey was distributed among CSUSB students that contained the G ProACT measure, demographic related items, and other established measures to gather construct validity. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with 488 participants indicated a lack of support for the hypothesized model. Specifically, the CFA revealed that three of the four factors did not relate to the presumed construct of proactive personality. Rigidness showed no relationship whereas anticipating opportunities and planning demonstrated marginal relationships to the underlying construct. Follow-up analyses indicated that taking initiative was the only subscale deemed as strongly factorable. Findings suggest a need to further explore taking initiative to determine if the measure appropriately captures the dispositional nature of Willingness to Work Hard. Future research should continue to examine if proactive personality or other motivational constructs are an appropriate fit for the RAW model.

Manuel Gonzalez Prada and two trends in Peruvian poetry.

Statton, Marian Joyce January 1968 (has links)
While González Prada was mainly a prose writer and ideologist, he did write poetry throughout his life, beginning perhaps even before he began to write prose. Although his poetry itself had little influence on other poets, the ideas which lie behind it did. The purpose of this paper is to show that there are two incipient trends of Peruvian poetry in Prada's poems: Modernism and indigenism. Prada’s tendency towards Modernism is found to be mainly theoretical and ideological, as his adoption of modernist style occurs when Modernism has already been established by Rubún Darío, and disappears after the publication of Exóticas in 1911. Chocano serves as a counterpoint to Prada in showing the extent to which the latter had any real influence on the development of a particular modernist poet, and to which the full development of Modernism differed from the innovations which Prada had envisioned. The incipient indigenism in Prada's poetry is represented in Baladas peruanas, although the point in which Prada anticipates twentieth century writers is that of the use of poetry as a vehicle for ideas, and as such is also evident in Libertarias and Presbiterianas. The nature of Prada’s indigenism is compared to that of Chocano in order to show the extent of the modernists' failure to develop the trends which Prada had foreshadowed. / Arts, Faculty of / French, Hispanic, and Italian Studies, Department of / Graduate

ECOTURISMO E INTERPRETAÇÃO AMBIENTAL COMO ESTRATÉGIA DE DIVULGAÇÃO DO PATRIMÔNIO NATURAL E CULTURAL DE ROQUE GONZALES-RS / ECOTOURISM AND ENVIRONMENTAL INTERPRETATION AS A DISSEMINATION STRATEGY OF THE NATURAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE OF ROQUE GONZALES-RS

Anschau, Magali Rambo 24 March 2016 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Touristic activities capable of highlighting the experiences and knowledge of natural and/or cultural characteristics should be included in tourism planning, enabling the development of important values for society. The landscape has elements of both natural and cultural expression, known as natural heritage and cultural heritage, which are seen as elements to be preserved for future generations. The natural heritage concerns the basis of memory by recording the past, which is essential for the establishment of cultural heritage.Comprehending what becomes significant in the landscape is understood as environmental interpretation and aims at the reading of natural and cultural heritage. Environmental interpretation is regarded as an interpretive treatment, which presses for the visitor's involvement with what is being interpreted. In this context, this study focused on the use of the touristic potential of the natural and cultural heritage of Roque Gonzales, whilst using interpretative instruments as a dissemination strategy of natural and cultural heritage. The municipality of Roque Gonzales is located in the northwest portion of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the missionary region. The proposed goal aimed to survey the natural and cultural heritage of Roque Gonzales. Based on this information, an interpretive plan for the sites of patrimonial relevance was conducted, thus collecting data on the existing infrastructure in the city and presenting a management statement for the sites of patrimonial relevance. In this way, we surveyed nine sites of heritage interest among the natural and cultural heritage sites: the Casa de Memoria (in restoration), Prainha (under construction), the Salto Pirapó, the Cordilheiras da Esquina Emanuel, Cerro Inhacurutum, the Cerro Inhacurutum lookout, Assunção do Ijuí, the Cruz de João de Castilho and the Cotovelo do rio Ijuí. In the Casa de Memória and Prainha, intervention is being carried out by Eletrosul and the municipality of Roque Gonzales, of which an analysis is being made of what is being proposed by the respective agencies. In the other heritage sites of interest, interpretive tools were proposed for the natural and cultural heritage according to the survey carried out. In addition to the survey of the necessary infrastructure for tourism development, a proposal for a tour guide for the municipality of Roque Gonzales was presented. In this sense , understand the dynamics and the meanings of the natural and cultural heritage of Roque Gonzales through environmental interpretation is critical to the dissemination and subsequent exploitation of this heritage process. In addition , this study extends the discussion of the relationship between society and nature through the promotion of natural and cultural heritage through interpretative instruments and ecotourism practices.

Villanueva, Carmen 10 April 2018 (has links)
In the Catecismo Patriótico by Gonzales Vigil in 1859, written evidence was found for thefi rst time of the anonymous verses that substituted, for almost 200 years, Torre Ugarte’sfi rst stanza of Peru’s national anthem, just shortly after it was created in 1821. Arguments toexclude it appeared in the late 19th century and 20th: it was anti-Hispanic, silenced rebellionsand colonial revolutions and went against Torre Ugarte’s author rights. Comparisonis made of the themes and language of the apocrypha verses with other national HispanicAmerican songs of the period, fi nding complete similarity in all of them. The debate centeredin the original text and the one from popular tradition. The conclusion comes with the Constitutional Tribunal’s decision and complementary dispositions from 2005 to 2010, to locatethe anonymous stanza at the end, and substitute it with one by Torre Ugarte.

We have performed a systematic ESR study of the rare-earth ions Nd3+, Gd3+, Er3+ and Yb3+ on powdered samples of various intermetallic compouns of AB2 cubic structure, where B is a transition-metal ion belonging to the group VIII of the Periodic Table, and A is a nonmagnetic ion. We were able to show a correlation between the observed g shifts and the position of the B ion in the Periodic Table. This variation is explained qualitatively using a simple multiband model, as well as band-structure arguments. The hyperfine constants for the 143Nd isotopes were found smaller in magnitude with respect to the value in insulators; this effect is attributed to s-electron self-polarization due to the Nd localized - moment - s-electron exchange coupling. The change of the resonance properties of the ground state of Nd3+ in the type II superconductors Ce Ru2, Th Ru2 and La Ru2 upon going from the normal state to the superconducting state are reported, and the data is discussed in terms of conduction electron¿s pairing mechanism and inhomogeneous field distribution mechanism in the superconducting state. A lattice-constant study of the cubic Ce(Irx Os1-x)2 and Ce(Ptx Ir 1-x)2 mixtures reveals anomalous lattice constant versus x behavior. Also the ESR thermal broadening and g-shift of Nd3+ in these compounds are anomalous but could be correlated with the lattice parameters. This is taken as evidence for intermediate-valence state in some of the mixtures / Doutorado / Física / Doutor em Ciências

Depositional and diagenetic processes in the formation of the Eocene Jackson Group bentonites, Gonzales County, Texas

Michaelides, Michael Nicholas 17 February 2012 (has links)
Bentonite clays are exposed in Paleogene strata stretching over 650 km parallel to the Texas coastline. This study focuses on a white and blue and a yellow and brown commercial Ca-montmorillonite bentonite near the city of Gonzales, Gonzales county, Texas. The deposits have stratigraphic ages of Late Eocene (~36.7 - 32.7 Ma). The bentonites in these deposits have varying colors, purities and brightness affording them diverse industrial uses. The distribution and geologic character of the high purity white and blue bentonite suggests that the deposit represents an accumulation of volcanic ash in a secondary tidal channel during the ash-fall event. A low rate of terrigenous clastic sedimentation and rapid accumulation of fresh ash were critical to the formation of high purity clay. The lower purity yellow and brown bentonites appear to have a fluvial origin marked by higher rates of detrital sedimentation and episodic accumulation of clay and ash. The bentonite and associated strata were studied using optical microscopy, SEM, XRD and REE analyses to constrain their textural, mineralogic, and chemical character. vii Eocene pyroclastic volcanism is well documented from sources in southwestern North America, specifically in the Sierra Madre Occidental (Mexico), Trans-Pecos (Texas) and Mogollan-Datil (New Mexico) volcanic fields. Projected Eocene wind patterns support this region as a potential source for the Gonzales bentonites. A comparison of the trace and REE fingerprints of the white and blue bentonites and the yellow and brown bentonites with data available for Late Eocene volcanics in the North American Volcanic Database provides a couple of potential matches. The strongest potential match for the Late Eocene bentonite protolith is described as a sample of silicic tuff with an age range of 32.2 – 30.6 Ma, located in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca. While the trace and REE match is strong, the tuff is somewhat young compared to the Jackson Group sediments. In addition, the sample location is due almost directly south of the Gonzales deposits, rather than the western location expected for a Gonzales bentonite source. The other potential matches are located in New Mexico, and the Mexican state of Chihuahua. These potential matches only have 6 REE available for comparison, and require further investigation. Many Paleogene volcanic units in southern North America are undocumented with regard to REE data or precise absolute ages. As additional geochemical analyses become available for a more extensive suite of Paleogene volcanic units, stronger matches with Gulf of Mexico Basin bentonites are expected to emerge. / text
