Academic excellence office in the faculty of management sciences

Seromo, M 01 March 2013 (has links)
Introduction In 2010, the Faculty of Management Sciences identified some of the root causes of student high failure rate as: students under preparedness, wrong career choice, lack of academic support, unexpected subjects such as accounting and statistics, written and oral communication and the different teaching and learning style. Underachieving students spend more unduly years in the system, they fail, repeat subjects and dropout causing concern for the university, faculty, and the government. In view of these facts the declining faculty performance and high student failure rate in the faculty of Management Sciences created a serious challenge that needed immediate academic interventions.

Academic motivation among college students: variance and predictors

Gillig, Benjamin 01 May 2016 (has links)
This three-paper dissertation addresses the manner in which students’ intrinsic motivation to engage in academic tasks changes during the four years of college. The first paper examines the variance of students’ academic motivation during college. The second paper analyzes whether good practices in undergraduate education promote academic motivation, and the third paper seeks to determine whether those good practices benefit certain students more than others. Implications are explored in each paper.

In pursuit of looking good : Thai women office workers and everyday consumption practices at work

Omphornuwat, Kosum January 2010 (has links)
Drawing upon my eleven-month ethnographic fieldwork in two business organisations in Bangkok, Thailand, this thesis explores Thai women office workers consumption of makeup and clothes at work. What emerges from this thesis is that a claim to beauty as a reason for which women are engaged in the consumption of makeup and clothes is not always valid. Grounded in theoretical discussions and empirical findings, I argue that the women s consumption of makeup and clothes is not always in the pursuit of beauty, but rather the pursuit of looking good. While beauty is perceived as an innate quality of the body, looking good entails the materialisation of the outer body through consumption practices in an attempt to achieve an ideal look. I introduce a concept of looking good practices. Looking good practices demonstrate the ways in which women office workers exert agency in mobilising their outer bodies to achieve an appropriate appearance at work. I argue that looking good practices entail a process of social learning. The women office workers learn to look good through the process by which they look at other women, participate in the practices shared amongst themselves, negotiate the meanings of appropriateness and reify such meanings through their consumption of makeup and clothes. By sharing meanings and practices, the women office workers inevitably participate in looking good practices, which, I argue, are social practices. My research also demonstrates how, through their engagement in the consumption of makeup and clothes, the women office workers aestheticise their bodies to be situated in the aesthetic workplace.

Silva, Max Martins Melo 14 December 2017 (has links)
Today’s world lives in a continuous process of transformation and information diffusion, and the processes of building knowledge and sharing experiences are no longer found only in written manuals, accessible only to the privileged. The Public Power cannot remain indifferent to the use of information as a tool for exercising its functions. In a scenario of strong litigiousness and setting of goals for the judgment of demands, information and profusion of practical knowledge are essential to elevate the position of the Court of Justice of Tocantins in the national scope, with the consequent materialization of access to justice as a human right, fact on which lies the reason for this research. It was attempted, therefore, to answer the question of whether it is possible that the creation of a databank for the dissemination of good practices helps combat untimeliness of justice and favors the fulfillment of human rights. It was aimed to demonstrate that the dissemination of information and good practices contributes to the achievement of a reasonable case length and to the efficiency of jurisdictional provision, in such a way as to propone the creation of a databank for the diffusion of good practices. Specifically, the objective was to show that the delay in jurisdictional provision affects the dignity of the human individual; to demonstrate how internal publicity and the dissemination of good practices are important to improve local jurisdictional provision; to propound the creation of a databank to disseminate good practices, as a means of promoting the effectiveness of jurisdictional provision; and to assist the Court of Justice of Tocantins in the fulfillment of its vision and mission of guaranteeing citizenship through the provision of prompt justice and of being recognized for its modernity, celerity and effectiveness. To do so, this work started from a deductive approach, following the general aspects of the theme until it reached the proposition of creating the databank to disseminate good practices. The data were analyzed in a qualitative way, through the bibliographic or documentary method, based on written materials, such as scientific researches, judgments, law texts, etc. It has been demonstrated that, through administrative solutions, it is possible to improve jurisdictional provision by sharing and propagating information of internal solutions found in the exercise of jurisdiction. Finally, it was concluded that the creation of a databank for the dissemination of good practices does not impose financial burdens on the Court of Justice of Tocantins and that it constitutes an adequate means to contribute to the improvement of jurisdictional provision and materialization of the human right of access to justice.

Uma abordagem para verificação de acessibilidade e usabilidade em aplicativos móveis / An approach to verifying accessibility and usability in mobile applications

Batista, Marisa Helena da Silva 16 October 2018 (has links)
Due to the digital revolution and popularization of interaction devices, various daily tasks previously accomplished through physical means are now being carried out by computers or smartphones. The huge flow of information requires people to be connected to internet services for longer on a day-to-day basis. Mobile devices are becoming more and more common to this end, because they are more practical and smaller than personal computers; this encourages the development of mobile applications to attend the demands. However, for a complete insertion of the population in this digital evolution, it is essential that mobile applications offer the possibility of access to different user profiles, regardless of their disabilities or limitations. A wide array of best practices of software development has been available seeking quality, productivity and quickness on the development of applications. While there is specific legislation, in the current panorama, there still exists many problems of accessibility and usability in the context of mobile applications that need to be solved. In this project, an approach incorporating the concepts of best practices for mobile development, associating guidelines and recommendations present in the literature, was developed aiming to compose a checklist about accessibility and usability in mobile applications. For this goal, the research followed along a bibliography review and a study of best practices for mobile applications development and existing recommendations for accessibility and usability. The complete checklist, denominated Acc_MobileCheck, was then validated by experts and developers.

Principles for innovation management in family firms: An analysis of long-term successful good practices with a practitioner validation of the principles

Fuetsch, Elena, Frank, Hermann, Keßler, Alexander, Bachner, Christine, Süss-Reyes, Julia January 2019 (has links) (PDF)
Purpose: Family firms (FF) reveal a considerable heterogeneity in their innovation behavior. Due to the successful long-term preservation of their innovation capacity via special resources and routines, multi-generational FF are of special interest in terms of learning from good practices. Against this background, the purpose of this paper is to ascertain principles for successful innovation behavior in long-term successful FF and to contribute to bridging the theory-practice gap. Design/method/Approach: Results are generated by analyzing innovation and innovation processes in five cases of long-term successful FF. On the basis of these good practice cases, the " rules of the game" of innovating are re-constructed using fine and system analyses based on narrative interviews with the FF CEOs. Findings: Intense reflection on the innovation characteristics of the five good practice cases along with a critical examination of the literature on innovation in FF were used to derive practical suggestions for FF in the form of 11 principles for FF taking a proactive interest in innovation. Practical implications: The 11 generated principles of successfully innovative FF were validated by FF CEOs who confirmed the practical relevance of these principles as valuable guidelines for successful innovation. Owners and managers may reflect on these principles against the background of the innovation behavior of their firms and adapt them to their contextual conditions. Originality/value: These principles serve as tangible suggestions for developing adequate innovation management strategies for individual FF. Furthermore, two FF CEOs were invited to comment on the viability of principles based on their comprehensive practical experience.
