Ground-level ozone (O3) is a familiar pollutant because it is associated with summer haze and smog alerts. The 2000-2008 weekday-weekend variations of ozone concentration were examined in relation to the Toronto weather conditions. The goal of this work is twofold: (1) To determine whether extreme ozone events were associated with specific weather conditions, (2) To determine whether the weekday-weekend effect of extreme ozone events could be detectable during the nine-year study period. The results show that in the study period, there were totally 313 days having extreme ground-level ozone events with ozone concentration ≥ 80 ppb, which is the current Ontario Ambient Air Quality Criterion for ozone concentration, in the four selected Toronto sites. Additionally, the weather condition mainly associated with these 313 days was the Dry Tropical one. This study also shows the phenomenon of the weekday-weekend effect of extreme ozone events in the past nine years in Toronto.

Tourism apartheid and Sustainable Ground Level Tourism : A study of tourism policy and its implications on society in CubaRutenborg, Jan January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to put focus on sustainability and tourism in Cuba and to explore the phenomenon of "tourism apartheid” and its implications on human rights and sustainable development. This is done by studying prior research on the subject and secondary research sources as well as new material and data collected through qualitative and quantative methods. This study tries to contribute to the overall research material regarding sustainable tourism with focus on Cuba and its circumstances by adding and analyzing new material as well as exploring the strategic measures Cuba has taken before in the tourism sector and in what direction Cuba is moving right now. The second aim of the essay is to explore the research gap that I have found in the literature which is the link between tourist apartheid and the lack of sustainable tourism and development. This is done by research in secondary resourses and by semi-structured interviews and surveys in order to get peoples opinions about this matter. Furthermore I try to make a contribution to the existing research gap regarding alternative touristmodels that better meassure up to the sustainable development criteria. This is done by introducing an old concept ,but in new form. It is called ground level tourism and I clarify the purpose, the structure and how it is linked to sustainable development in the essay in a special section. This form of traveling is not new as a concept but it is new to Cuba because of the Cuban authorities wish to have control over the tourist market. This is explained and discussed in the essay together with the concept tourism apartheid and with a brief resumé of the history of tourism in Cuba. At the end the new research findings are presented and analysed. Finally the conclusions drawn from the research and the findings is presented before the appendix.

Emission inventories from Kuwait petroleum refineries and respective ground level concentration of pollutants in the neighboring residential areaAlanezi, Salwa January 2013 (has links)
The State of Kuwait has three large refineries, namely, Mina Al Ahmadi Refinery, Mina Abdullah Refinery and Shuaiba Refinery. These refineries process and refine Kuwait Crude Oil through different process units. There are many heaters, boilers and flares that form a part of the complicated equipment which enhance the different petroleum processes. Fuel gas is used as a firing fuel for those heaters and boilers. As a result, stack emissions like SO2, NOx, CO are predominantly present in the flue gases and this study focuses on those emissions and their impact on the surrounding residential area. The area of interest will be Umm Al-Hyman residential area. This study accumulates emission inventories from the three refineries and the respective ground level concentration of the pollutants in the neighboring residential area. It also focuses on the impact of emissions from the refinery operations on the ground level concentrations in the surrounding areas by using the inventory model and latest emission factors to provide accurate emission estimates. The models were developed and the results were verified with the actual data from the area of impact. As a result of the findings of the major pollutants, namely SO2, NOx & CO, it is found that SO2 and CO are not exceeding Kuwait EPA Ambient Air Quality Standards for Residential Areas normally. However, NOx is observed to exceed occasionally. Even though, NOx emissions from refineries sources represented by plume models were much less, there is a consistent increase in the measured NOx. Furthermore, in 2007, the measured hourly, daily and annual NOx concentration exceeded the international standard many times. The increasing trend in NOx is attributed to continuous increase in population and the number of motor vehicles. The study will go further step in recommending engineering solutions and best practices to reduce the pollutants concentrations which will help in the reduction of human health risks and protect the environment.

Darbo objektas – Gaisravietė Zarasų miškų urėdijos Salako girininkijos 48 kvartalo 10 sklype.
Darbo tikslas – nustatyti žemutinių miško ardų: pomiškio, trako, žolinės augalijos ir samanų kaitą, metinį medienos prieaugio kitimą po pažeminio gaisro pušyne Nb augavietėje.
Darbo metodai – gaisravietėje buvo parinkta 1 m pločio ir 20 m ilgio juostos. Apskaitos aikštelių pradžia ir pabaiga pažymėta natūroje.
Vieno kv. m. (1m x 1 m) apskaitos aikštelėse nustatytas degavietės padengimas trako ir pomiškio augalų, žolių bei samanų danga procentais, suskaičiuoti medžių daigai, registruotos žolių ir samanų rūšys, įvertinant jų padengimą procentais. Šiame darbe pateikiami 2006-2011 m duomenys.
Iš 20 pušų I ir II klasės pagal Krafto klasifikaciją, naudojant Pressler grąžtą 1,3 m aukštyje buvo paimti mėginiai metiniam medienos prieaugiui nustatyti.
Metiniam medienos prieaugio matavimui buvo naudojama LINTAB medžių matavimo sistema ir TSAP programų rinkinys. Darbe pateikiami 1990 – 2010 metų medienos prieaugio kitimai.
Duomenys kaupiami duomenų bazėje panaudojant programą EXCEL.
Darbo rezultatai. Po pažeminio miško gaisro pušyne Nb augavietėje pomiškis išnyko, o trako augalų kiekis nežymiai sumažėjo ir išnyko prieš tai augęs paprastasis šermukšnis. Pažeminis miško gaisras padidino gaisravietės ploto padengimą žoliniais augalais ir žolinės dangos rūšinę sudėtį. Gaisravietėje nustatyta 16 žolių rūšių, o kontroliniame medyne 9 žolių rūšys. The aim – to determine the lower forest quarrel: the change of undergrowth forest, underbrush, herbaceous and moss, also, variation of annual timber increment after the ground-level fire in a pine forest Nb habitat.
The methods – there were chosen bands of 1 meter wide and 20 meters length in the fire place. A beginning and an end of the accounting sites were marked at a ground.
In a one square meter (1 m x 1 m) accounting sites there were determined percentage of the fire place’s coverage by the underbrush, undergrowth forest, grass and moss cover. In addition, there were counted tree seedlings, there were registered grass’ and moss’ species evaluating their coverage in percentage. This paper presents data from 2006 till 2011.
According to Kraft classification, there were taken samples from the 20 pines of the first and the second classes, using Pressler drill in the height of 1,3 meters, to determine the annual increment.
For a measuring of the annual timber increment there was used LINTAB tree measuring system and TSAP program set. This paper presents a variation of timber growth in 1990-2010.
The data are stored in a data base using the EXCEL program.

Observations of Reactive Nitrogen Oxides: From Ground Level Ozone Production to Biosphere-atmosphere Exchange in Downwind Forest EnvironmentsGeddes, Jeffrey 07 August 2013 (has links)
In urban areas, emissions of nitrogen oxide radicals (NOx ≡ NO + NO2) to the atmosphere from anthropogenic activities such as fossil fuel combustion contribute to poor air quality through the production of ozone and particulate matter. Soils are also a significant global source of NOx, but at downind forest environments the deposition of transported reactive nitrogen can be much more important than local emissions.
Data from a government monitoring network in the Toronto area from 2000-2007 was used to explore the impact of long-term trends in NO2 and other ozone precursors on local ozone levels. Non-linear chemistry and the influence of meteorology explained why reductions in precursor levels during this period did not lead to significant improvements in ozone. Data from this network was also used to investigate the ability of a satellite-borne spectrometer to represent spatial patterns of ground-level NO2 in the same region. Selection biases, resulting from the need to discard satellite data on cloudy days, were shown to affect locations differently and were most severe at a receptor site.
The sum of all reactive nitrogen oxides including NOx is known as NOy. A custom-built instrument for high precision and time resolution measurements of reactive nitrogen oxides was tested under various lab and field conditions, and used in field work where direct biosphere-atmosphere exchange of NOy was measured by eddy covariance above two comparable North American mixed forests (Haliburton Forest Wildlife Reserve and the University of Michigan Biological Station). While these forests were found to be small net sources of NOx, they were subject to elevated rates of NOy deposition overall, driven by the transport of polluted air from upwind source regions. Wet deposition measurements were used to show that dry deposition contributed a significant fraction of total deposition during the observation periods.
