The place of underpinning knowledge and understanding in National Vocational Qualifications : a case study in beauty therapy

Taylor, Robert W. January 2000 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with the analysis and comparison of the science underpinning knowledge and understanding (UKU) component of the City and Guilds of London Institute (CGLI) programme in Beauty Therapy and its replacement, the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ). NVQs are primarily concerned with practical competence, this being specified solely in terms of outcomes or outputs. The perceived predominance of practical skills over theoretical UKU within NVQs has led to concerns that trainees would no longer be able to solve problems, or deal with novel or non-standard situations as they arise in the workplace. The research includes both qualitative and quantitative research tools used to evaluate the amount and depth of UKU learned by CGLI and NVQ trainees within five Further Education colleges. Although the amount of science taught on the CGLI programme was judged to be greater and more demanding than the NVQ, it was largely taught and assessed in terms of pure theory rather than practical application. In contrast, the science UKU taught and assessed in the NVa programme was specified alongside each of the practical skills; however, it was found that NVQ trainees were less able to deal with real-life problems that might be encountered in the workplace. The ability of both cohorts to apply the UKU learned to workplace problems was impeded by their lack of problem solving skills, this being a major deficiency of both programmes. The conclusion is that a new framework is required for the derivation and speCification of UKU within NVQs, which incorporates both learning input and assessment output. A proposed format for the NVQ programme, which specifies the relevant science UKU in terms of each practical skill and the overall programme, is put forward as the blueprint for al\ NVQs. Problem solving skills should also be directly incorporated into NVQ standards. The results obtained are discussed in the light of potential philosophical and epistemological paradigms associated with the NVQ model.

A study of the Ottoman guilds as they are depicted in Turkish miniature paintings /

Serban, Carrie. January 2009 (has links)
This thesis explores the Ottoman guilds during the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries as they are depicted in the miniature paintings contained within two well-known and well-preserved festival albums: the Surname-i Humayun (1582) and the Surname-i Vehbi (1720). These manuscripts describe the events occurring during the festival celebrations for the circumcisions of the sons of Sultan Murad III (r. 1574-95) and Sultan Ahmed III (r. 1703-30) and while they offer an excellent portrait of Ottoman society in general, they are particularly noteworthy for their portrayals of guild processions. Based on analysis of the festival paintings as well as on existing literature, the guilds are examined in the greater context of the Ottoman Empire and aspects such as guild function, structure, hierarchy, membership, and origins and evolution of the guilds are considered.

The tailors of London and their guild, c.1300-1500

Davies, Matthew P. January 1994 (has links)
This thesis examines the roles played by craft organisations or 'guilds' in medieval urban society through a case study of the tailors of London in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Using the records of the City and of the guilds themselves, including the important early records of the Tailors, this study seeks to answer important questions about the nature of these organisations and the impact which they had upon urban society. Far from being the mere 'agents' of municipal governments, craft guilds often performed important and constructive functions on behalf of the artisans themselves. The first two chapters examine the extent to which voluntarism characterized the activities of many of these associations: the guild of London tailors, though unusual in the scale and scope of its spiritual and charitable provision, embodied widely shared principles of association which were not articulated solely through parish guilds. Subsequent chapters look at the ways in which the Tailors' guild expressed and articulated other concerns of their members and those outside the ruling guild: in the sphere of City politics, for instance, the Tailors came to represent the aspirations of many poorer citizens through their struggle for civic prominence. Likewise, in the sphere of economic regulation, this thesis demonstrates the ways in which the Tailors' guild, among others, was able to introduce flexible and pragmatic policies of enforcement, based upon the shared interests of those inside and outside the decision-making groups. The final section of the thesis then examines more closely the limitations of impressions of economic structures derived purely from guild statutes. First, the nature of apprenticeship and servanthood in medieval London is examined with particular emphasis upon the differing perceptions of these 'life-cycle institutions' by all concerned. Secondly, a systematic analysis of the structure of the tailoring industry in London is carried out and explores the remarkable diversity of economic life in the capital.
