Limit Cycles and Dynamics of Rumor Models

This thesis discusses limit cycles and behavior of rumor models. The first part presents the deterministic Daley-Kendall model (DK) with arrivals and departures and comparison of the Susceptibles, Infectives and Removed (SIR) model and the DK model. The second result is a part of the qualitative analysis and the general behavior of extension of the Daley-Kendall model. Here we discuss how the halting rate of spreaders causes the model to change from a stable equilibrium or a stable limit cycle. In the third part we carry out model validation and use both synthetic data and real data sets and fit them to the numerical solutions of the extended Daley-Kendall model. Finally, we find the parameter estimates and standard errors. In this way we shall be able to decide whether the numerical solutions quantifying the relationships between the variables obtained from the qualitative analysis can be accepted as the best description of the data. We discuss sensitivity analysis results and traditional sensitivity functions.

Asynchronous Cellular Automata - Special Networks Local Slowdown Produces Global Speedup

Information processing in living tissues is dramatically different from what we see in common man-made computer. The data and processing is distributed into the activity of cells which communicate only with neighboring cells. There is no clock for the global synchronization of cellular activities. There is not even one bit of central memory for globally shared data. The communication network between cells is highly irregular and may change without changing the outcome of the computation. A simple network of automata is introduced and analyzed to represent a mathematical model of special group of cells in an imaginary tissue sample. The interaction between the cells, their communication method, and their level of intelligence is studied. Three different structures of this model are demonstrated. Later on a simplification in the cells' program and elimination of a beat keeping clock will lead to a finite state automata network that is surprisingly more powerful in achieving the overall network's goal than its previous generation which had the advantage of more complex programs and a beat keeping clock.

Consoling frustrated scholars: a copy of a parting gift by Wen Zhengming

Farewell in the Garden is a Qing dynasty (1644-1911) copy of a parting gift painted by Wen Zhengming (1470-1559) for his student Wang Chong (1494-1533) to mark the occasion of Wang Chong’s visit before he left to write the civil service examination. In addition to this painting, three other versions bearing similar poetic inscriptions exist. These four paintings present an intriguing riddle and oppourtunity to consider copies as works worthy of scholarly attention. The compelling scene of farewell between teacher and student who both failed the examinations numerous times resonated with audiences who empathized with their disappointments. A longing to serve in the government is visible when these paintings are considered in relation to earlier literati art. The sketch-like traces of a ledge that is in all of the copies except Farewell in the Garden, hint to the visual possibility of this scene being situated on a shore. Wen Zhengming, through his subtle lines, alludes to this powerful site of parting which is frequently depicted in literati landscape painting and associated with scholar officials and men of merit. This thesis situates Farewell in the Garden and its copies within the wider tradition of literati painting through the theme of service. Government service, as a Confucian ideal, and as a recurring theme in literati painting, transforms in appearance over time, reflecting political, economic, and philosophical shifts. In the Ming dynasty, the ideal of service is manifest and demonstrated in the continued pursuit to serve in office, and the garden, reminiscent of the locations depicted in literati painting, becomes a suitable setting for this enactment. I argue that this parting scene of Wen Zhengming and Wang Chong came to implicitly represent the commitment to serve in government. The cogent Confucian ideal demonstrated by teacher and student is the unyielding determination to serve, and it is this very sentiment or quality in the copies of the farewell painting – the tenacious endeavour to be of service – that is at once consoling and persuasive.

Simulátor Turingových strojů popsaných pomocí kompozitních diagramů / Simulator of Turing Machines Described by Means of Composite Diagrams

In this thesis, the theory related to Turing machines and means of their description (with focus on composite diagrams) is presented. The aim of this work is to create an application that allows editing Turing machines described by means of composite diagrams and simulating their computation on specified input configuration (including non-deterministic and multi-tape machines). Furthermore, within the application it will be possible to run the termination analysis of Turing machine in order to determine whether this machine or any of its parts always halt. The resulting application is implemented in Java and the termination analysis is performed using the well-founded orders. And so, one of the results created during this work is a software tool which allows designing and testing of Turing machines described by means of composite diagrams. Resulting application may be used especially during lectures on theoretical computer science, where it can be used to demonstrate computation of some Turing machine.

This study assesses the viability of temporarily halting wind turbine operations as amitigation measure to protect bird populations during migration periods. Conducted in thenorthern Baltic, it examines the migration patterns, timings, and altitudes of various birdspecies, aiming to identify the most critical times for implementing turbine stoppages.Utilizing statistical analyses, including F-tests to evaluate migration intensity differencesamong species, the report proposes that strategic, short-duration shutdowns cansignificantly reduce avian collisions. The research emphasizes the importance of species-specific approaches and evaluates the cost-effectiveness of various bird collision reductiontechniques, such as blade painting and thermal detection for dynamic shutdowns. Thisapproach seeks to balance the ecological impact of wind turbines with the necessity forrenewable energy development, offering practical solutions that could enhance biodiversityconservation efforts without substantially compromising energy production efficiency.

La notion de l'émergence, intuitivement reliée à tant de phénomènes naturels, se voit offrir une définition cadrée dans le domaine plus spécifique des statistiques algorithmiques. Capturant toutes deux l'organisation non triviale d'un objet, la sophistication et la profondeur logique sont relativisées à un objet auxiliaire puis remises en relation. Enfin, des modèles proposant une description locale des systèmes quantiques sont démontrés équivalents, ont leur coût de description quantifié et sont généralisés aux systèmes continus. / This thesis explores aspects of the physical world through the lens of algorithmic information. The notion of emergence, intuitively linked to many natural phenomena, is offered a definition framed in the field of algorithmic statistics. Both capturing non-trivial organization of an object, sophistication and logical depth are compared once relativized to an auxiliary object. Finally, models proposing a local description of the quantum systems are shown equivalent, have their description cost quantified and are generalized to continuous systems.
