Une équation stochastique avec sauts censurés liée à des PDMP à plusieurs régimes / A stochastic equation with censored jumps related to multi-scale Piecewise Deterministic Markov Processes

L'ensemble de ce travail est dédié à l'étude de certaines propriétés concernant les processus de sauts d-dimensionnels X = (Xt) dont le générateur est donné par Lψ(x) = 1/2 ∑ aᵤᵥ(x)∂²ψ(x)/∂xᵤ∂xᵥ + g(x)∇ψ(x) + ∫ (ψ(x + c(z, x)) − ψ(x))γ(z, x)µ(dz) où µ est de masse totale infinie. Si γ ne dépendait pas de x, nous nous trouverions dans une situation classique où le processus X pourrait être représenté comme une solution d'une équation stochastique comportant une mesure ponctuelle de Poisson de mesure d'intensité γ(z)µ(dz) ; lorsque γ dépend de x, on peut s'en représenter l'heuristique en imaginant le processus comme la trajectoire d'une particule, la loi des sauts pouvant alors dépendre de la position de la particule. Dans la première partie, nous donnons des conditions pour obtenir l'existence et l'unicité de tels processus. Ensuite, nous considérons ce type de processus comme une généralisation des PDMP ; nous montrons qu'ils peuvent être vus comme une limite d'une suite (Xᵣ(t)) de PDMP standards pour lesquels l'intensité des sauts tend vers l'infini quand r tend vers l'infini, suivant deux régimes : un lent et un rapide qui, en supposant que les processus en question sont centrés et normalisés convenablement, produit une composante de diffusion à la limite. Finalement, on prouve la récurrence au sens de Harris de X en utilisant un schéma régénératif entièrement basé sur les sauts du processus. De plus, nous dégageons des conditions explicites par rapport aux coefficients du processus qui nous permettent de contrôler la vitesse de convergence vers l'équilibre en terme d'inégalités de déviation pour des fonctionnelles additives intégrables. Dans la seconde partie, nous considérons à nouveau le même type de processus X = (Xt(x)) partant du point x. Utilisant une approche basé sur un Calcul de Malliavin fini-dimensionnel, nous étudions la régularité jointe de ce processus dans le sens suivant : on fixe b≥1 et p>1, K un ensemble compact de Rᵈ, et nous donnons des conditions suffisantes pour avoir P(Xt(x)∈dy)=pt(x,y)dy avec (x,y)↦pt(x,y) appartenant à Wᵇᵖ(K×Rᵈ) / This work is dedicated to the study of some properties concerning the d-dimensional jump type diffusion X = (Xt) with infinitesimal generator given by Lψ(x) = 1/2 ∑ aᵤᵥ(x)∂²ψ(x)/∂xᵤ∂xᵥ + g(x)∇ψ(x) + ∫ (ψ(x + c(z, x)) − ψ(x))γ(z, x)µ(dz) where µ is of infinite total mass. If γ did not depend on x, we would be in a classical situation where the process X could be represented as the solution of a stochastic equation driven by a Poisson point measure with intensity measure γ(z)µ(dz) ; when γ depends on x, we may have the heuristic idea that, if we were to imagine the process as a trajectory of a particle, the law of the jumps may depend on the position of the particle. In the first part, we give some conditions to obtain existence and uniqueness of such processes. Then, we consider this type of processes as a generalization of Piecewise Deterministic Markov Processes (PDMP) ; we show that they can be seen as a limit of a sequence (Xᵣ(t)) of standard PDMP's for which the intensity of the jumps tends to infinity as r tends to infinity, following two regimes: a slow one, which leads to a jump component with finite variation, and a rapid one which, supposing that the processes at hand are centered and renormalized in a convenient way, produces the diffusion component in the limit. Finally, we prove Harris recurrence of X using a regeneration scheme which is entirely based on the jumps of the process. Moreover we state explicit conditions in terms of the coefficients of the process allowing to control the speed of convergence to equilibrium in terms of deviation inequalities for integrable additive functionals. In the second part, we consider again the same type of process X = (Xt(x)) starting from x. Using an approach based on a finite dimensional Malliavin Calculus, we study the joint regularity of this process in the following sense : we fix b≥1 and p>1, K a compact set of Rᵈ, and we give sufficient conditions in order to have P(Xt(x)∈dy)=pt(x,y)dy with (x,y)↦pt(x,y) in Wᵇᵖ(K×Rᵈ)

This thesis engages with Wilson Harris's vision for the Caribbean in light of the processes of land settlement, appropriation, genocide and slave trafficking that have historically denied the region's population of human identity. Concerned primarily with Wilson Harris's first four published novels, Palace of the Peacock (1960), The Far Journey of Oudin (1961), The Whole Armour (1962), and The Secret Ladder (1963), which were then grouped together and republished as The Guyana Quartet (1985), the study of this quartet also focuses on Harris's critical essays, most notably "The Amerindian Legacy" (1990). Firstly, this thesis situates Wilson Harris within the context of postcolonial thought and Caribbean literature in the 20th century. Then, it focuses on the remnants of colonial conquest that appear continuously in Harris's four novels under the repeated motif of pursuit. By exploring the presence of Jungian thought in Harris's fictional writing and critical writing, as well as the immanent ontology of the Caribbean that underpins the author's vision, the thesis draws out Harris's response to the cycle of persecution that he believes to stagnate the Caribbean. Thank you. / The problem of this dissertation is to ascertain to what extent the philosophy of Georg W. F. Hegel is influential in the formulation of the philosophy of education of William Torrey Harris. The term 'influence' is used in three different ways: First, in the straightforward sense in which Harris makes specific mention that an idea which he accepts was the direct result of his exposure to Hegel. Second, when an idea of Hegel's is accepted in toto by Harris and there is no evidence that Harris obtained the idea from any other source. Third, when an idea of Hegel's leads Harris to modify or expand it to such an extent that the idea can no longer be strictly called Hegelian. The most frequent use of the term is in the two former senses rather than in the latter problematic sense. On the basis of an examination of Harris' own intellectual and philosophical development, this work suggests that the primary area of Hegel's influence on Harris is axiological. Harris utilizes the Hegelian notion of freedom as the central notion in his philosophy of education. Underlying this notion of freedom is the category of causality, which, when viewed under the category of the understanding implies mechanistic determinism but, when viewed from the level of reason implies self-determination which is non-mechanistic. However, Harris' analysis of freedom is not exhausted by an "abstract justification," to use Hegel's term. Both Hegel and Harris insist that abstract or metaphysical freedom must be made concrete in the institutional life of the state. At this point, Harris' discussion of the major institutions of society, i.e., the family, civil society, and the state, are almost totally Hegelian. The relation of education to the state then becomes clear: Harris defines education as the process by which the individual becomes ethical--a definition which Harris takes to be originally Hegel's. The school is conceived of as that institution which enables the individual to become self-estranged or self-alienated, a necessary characteristic in the development of the ethical life. For Harris as well as Hegel the self is initially characterized as selfish. However, this quality must be overcome in order that the individual may become ethical i.e., an effective member of the state. For Harris, the central notion of an educational philosophy must be grounded in philosophy itself. However, educational philosophy also has the responsibility to formulate the means by which the philosophical objective may be implemented. For example, using Hegelian terms, Harris insists that the elementary school operates at the level of representation, the secondary school at the level of understanding, and the college at the level of reason. These three levels of education correspond generally to Hegel's categories of being, essence, and notion. However, the main function of the school is to see that the will and the intellect are trained so that they will enhance the freedom of the person. Thus, the elementary school may emphasize the training of the will, but not to the point where it would ignore the training of the intellect. On the other hand, various traditional subjects, especially the humanities, afford the student the opportunity to study the history of the intellect and the will: for example, a history of man's actions is a study of the will, while the history of philosophy is an examination of man's intellectual attempt to come to understand reality. If the school were successful in enabling the student to find truth and to act in accordance with truth, then the goal of education would be realized; that is, the student would have turned his formal or abstract freedom into substantial or concrete freedom. Harris' philosophical and educational views are critically examined on five counts: His notion of freedom, his ideas on the various levels of knowing and their relationship to education, his notion of the relationship of the self to institutional arrangements, his theory of the relationship between the school and other institutions, and finally his views on the relationship between philosophy and philosophy of education. In conclusion, it is suggested that Harris' contribution to educational philosophy lies not in the construction of a new perspective, but in the application of the Hegelian philosophy to the problem of education. / 2031-01-01

Long-Range Dependence of Markov Processes

Long-range dependence in discrete and continuous time Markov chains over a countable state space is defined via embedded renewal processes brought about by visits to a fixed state. In the discrete time chain, solidarity properties are obtained and long-range dependence of functionals are examined. On the other hand, the study of LRD of continuous time chains is defined via the number of visits in a given time interval. Long-range dependence of Markov chains over a non-countable state space is also carried out through positive Harris chains. Embedded renewal processes in these chains exist via visits to sets of states called proper atoms. Examples of these chains are presented, with particular attention given to long-range dependent Markov chains in single-server queues, namely, the waiting times of GI/G/1 queues and queue lengths at departure epochs in M/G/1 queues. The presence of long-range dependence in these processes is dependent on the moment index of the lifetime distribution of the service times. The Hurst indexes are obtained under certain conditions on the distribution function of the service times and the structure of the correlations. These processes of waiting times and queue sizes are also examined in a range of M/P/2 queues via simulation (here, P denotes a Pareto distribution).
