Nossos nomes verdadeiros: a noção ameríndia de diferença em Wilson Harris / Our real names: the amerindian notion of difference in Wilson Harris

Jamille Pinheiro Dias 15 March 2011 (has links)
This dissertation presents how the way the Guyanese writer Wilson Harris creates characters in The Sleepers of Roraima (1970) resonates with premises of the idea of difference existing in indigenous cosmologies of lowland South America. In order to outline a relation between these planes, the work focuses on corporeality and perspective, two themes that are key to americanist ethnology, linking them to the processes of singularization of characters narrated in Harriss trilogy of novellas. More precisely, this research highlights how modes of individuation of the native peoples of the region reverberate in the dynamics that make up the fictional beings in his work. These dynamics, mediated by pre-individual aspects which are irreducible to a morphology of physiologically distinct embodiments, take part in the focalization of the novellas, producing an axis of proliferation of perspectives. Thus, the narrator turns away from the principle of identity as the common denominator of personification, converging with the differentiating replication that characterizes practices within many Amerindian ontologies. This study shows that the analyzed characters are not defined by intellectual or psychological boundaries, but vary relationally as they actualize points of views unfolded by narrative features such as oxymorons and parallelisms. Such textual procedures are directed against the determinism of mimetic realism, through lines of imbrication between baroque dilemmas, surrealist bricolages and the Amerindian notion of difference. As from this literary analysis, this dissertation outlines contributions to deepening a reciprocity of perspectives between Americanist ethnology, the philosophy of difference and literary studies, benefiting from this symmetrization as a point of entry for interrogating modern antipodes such as nature/culture, individual/society and we/others.

Teste Goodenough-Harris e indicadores maturacionais de Koppitz para o desenho da figura humana: estudo normativo para crianças de São Paulo / Goodenough-Harris Test and Koppitz Maturity Indicators for The Human Drawing Figure: Normative Study for children of São Paulo

Rosa, Helena Rinaldi 26 May 2006 (has links)
The purpose of this work was to establish norms for the Human Figure Drawing, specifically for the Man’s Drawing, evaluated by Goodenough-Harris Test (1963) and by the Koppitz Maturity Indicators (1973), as well to get data relating to reliability and validity. The sample was composed by 1540 children, from 5 to 11½ years old, both sexes and school type and it was designed to be a representative sample of students from São Paulo city. Variables aspects age, sex and school type was controlled, this last one as a socioeconomic level indication. Children were assessed individually, and it was asked to Draw a Man and then was applied the R-2 Test. It was performed a Variance Analysis, considering as variables age, sex and school type. It was found that age levels with six months range did not discriminate groups. Another Variance Analysis indicated that age groups with one year range could discriminate age groups and the means scores increased with age in both assessment systems. For Goodenough-Harris system it was found sex differences only in preschool children, but it was not found school type differences, showing that drawing is more associated to maturational factors than environmental factors. Norms were presented in percentiles scores by age, and separated by sex only for 5 and 6 years old. Similar results were found in Koppitz assessment and norms are presented by age and separated by sex only for 5, 6 and 7 years old children. Correlations coefficients between two assessment systems of Man Drawing scores and the R-2 Test for global sample were significant (r= 0,575 to Koppitz and r= 0,606 to Goodenoough-Harris). Correlations between two assessment systems of drawing were high and significant (0,899). Reliability retest coefficients were satisfactory (r= 0,808 to Goodenough-Harris and 0,708 to Koppitz to global sample). The Split-Half reliability to total sample was 0,923 to Goodenough-Harris and 0,857 to Koppitz. It was calculated passing items frequencies and point-biserial correlations for age and for total sample in both systems. Results were compared with researches of Harris (1963), Alves (1979), Koppitz (1973), Hutz & Antoniazzi (1995) and Sarti (1999). It was concluded that both scores systems of Man’s Drawing were adequate to cognitive assessment of São Paulo city children and can be used to screening and psychological diagnostic.

Komparace jednotlivých metod určování bazálního metabolismu / Comparison of methods of basal metabolism determination

Kosková, Martina January 2018 (has links)
Title: Comparison of individual methods of basal metabolism determination Objectives: The aim of the work is to compare the individual methods of basal metabolism. These values were measured by indirect calorimetry, plethysmography, bioelectric impedance and predictive equations. Methods: The research was attended by 31 people, including eight men and twenty-three women. All participants of my research were aged 21-30 years. None of the participants was a professional athlete, they were all healthy and none of the women were pregnant or had menstruation. The indirect calorimetry, bioelectronics impedance device Tanita MC - 980 and BOD POD were used to collect the data. Basal metabolic rates were calculated from the prediction equations by Harris & Benedict, Fleisch's equation and Schofield's equation using measured anthropometric values. Results: The results of the methods that have been used for this group of people vary, but the difference is not significant. If we choose as a reference method indirect calorimetry, we can't replace it by any other method. The results for other methods are not significantly different, so we can replace one method with another, except indirect calorimetry. From calculations, we also found out that fat free mass greatly influences the results of basal metabolic rate...

Roy Harris' American Symphony - 1938: A Perspective on Its Historical Significance and Autogenetic Elements With a Performance of a Reconstructed Modern Wind Ensemble Edition

Lamb, Brian 05 1900 (has links)
American composer Roy Harris began writing a symphony for the Tommy Dorsey band in 1938, but the piece was never completed. This dissertation project chronicles the events surrounding the interesting collaboration between the composer and the bandleader, including problems incurred during the rehearsal process, the eventual abandonment of the project, and the discovery of the little-known band work. The paper includes information on the composer's life and works, an in-depth discussion of the compositional technique that Harris called “autogenesis,” and a detailed analysis of the two surviving movements of the band piece. The piece is also discussed comparatively with other significant works in Harris' symphonic genre, most notably his Folksong Symphony, also known as his Fourth Symphony. A significant portion of the research and preparation for the project was spent reconstructing a modern wind ensemble edition of the two surviving movements. A complete score of the reconstructed edition is included as part of this project.

Assessment of cognitive development in four to eight year old children by means of drawing tasks

Karakitsou, Chrisoula January 1999 (has links)
The present thesis explores the link between children's drawings and cognitive development. The aim of this study is to investigate the intellectual abilities of the child draughtsman with good depiction skills and to evaluate the merit of the drawing technique in the assessment of conceptual maturity. The standardised Goodenough-Harris Drawing Test (GHDT) of intellectual maturity was administered to 115 children between 4 to 8 years of age against criterion ability measures (Wechsler scales). Its psychometric properties are examined in respect to its norms and scales, its reliability and validity at different age levels and ranges of intelligence. Early theories in the area of pictorial representation were directed towards identifying features characteristic of different developmental periods (Kerschensteiner, 1905; Luquet, 1927/1977). At the same time Piaget and Inhelder (1948/1967) incorporated these stage theories into their model of spatial intelligence. Yet, the recent experimental study of children's drawings has disclosed a number of variables which interfere during the course of production, challenging the view that drawings can be seen as the royal route to access children's concepts. Stage theories are re-evaluated by means of fourteen experimental drawing tasks with various degree of difficulty. The tasks - administered to the same children tested with the standardised instruments -are spatial in nature and have been sampled from two widely researched areas related to the pictorial representation of partial occlusion and of spatial axes (horizontal/vertical). The acquisition of the pertinent spatial concepts by means of drawings is examined, considering competence-deficiency and competence-utilisation accounts of children's performance at different ages. Finally, overall perfomance on spatial tasks is compared with performance on conventional (Wechsler scales) and non-verbal (GHDT) measures of intellectual functioning, considering the optimum method to assess children's abilities by means of drawings. In general, drawing performance is reasonably sensitive to children's level of intelligence, yet the significance of drawing varies at different ages and ranges of IQ. Finally, the establishment of steadfast developmental trajectories falls short in the field of pictorial representation. The variable performance, particularly from the children at intermediate ages, suggests that the stages of intellectual or visual realism should be seen as relative and not as absolute.

El viaje: Transtextualidad discursiva en Cipango de Tomás Harris

Calderón González, Lila January 2008 (has links)

Mellado Molina, Igor January 2016 (has links)

Indirect calorimetry x Harris Benedict: determination, validation and comparision to calculate rest metabolic rate in morbidly obese.

Nonino, Carla Barbosa 22 March 2002 (has links)
Studies analyzing resting energy expenditure (REE) have contributed with equations that were intended to establish a pattern that could be used generally to estimate the REE. Harris Benedict’s (HB) equation remains as the most used in estimating the REE. But in obese subjects, the use of predictive equations can lead to conflicting results. Obese individuals undergoing a hypo caloric diet may have a reduction in the REE and in the total energy expenditure. These are the most probably cause of the slowing on weight loss during the treatment. Some studies show that when the REE is relative to the fat free mass (FFM) there is less variability and their proposal is a correlation between FFM and REE. But it is difficult to confirm if a reduction in total body mass also can diminish the REE. The objective of this study was to define the REE of female subjects with grade III obesity (body mass index (BMI) > 40 kg/m2) using indirect calorimetry (IC) and to compare this REE with the one estimated with HB equation using real body weight and ideal body weight, and try to correlate the REE obtained by IC with the body composition, validating the relation between REE and FFM in these individual before and after weight loss. The patients were under hospital regimen in the Metabolic Unit of the Nutrology Division of the Internal Medicine Department of the HCFMRP-USP, for an 8 weeks period. At the beginning and at the end of the study, nutritional assessment was realized, including anthropometry, bioimpedance and indirect calorimetry. The patients were undergoing a hypo caloric diet during the 8 week period. The REE obtained by indirect calorimetry (IC) at the beginning and at the end of the study was 2540 ± 417 e 1924 ± 275 kcal/day, respectively (p<0,05). When estimated with the HB equation using real weight the values were 2074 ± 214 e 1941 ± 190 kcal/day (p<0,05). Using the ideal weight, the calculated REE was 1343 ± 59 kcal/day. At the beginning of the study, REE obtained by IC was 18 % greater than the REE calculated with HB equation using the real weight and 47 % greater than the one calculated using the ideal body weight. At the end of the study these values changed to 1% e 30% respectively. There is a significant difference (p<0,05) when comparing the REE obtained by IC with the one calculated using the HB equation with real weight at the beginning of the study, but this does not happen at the end of the study (p>0,05). The REE corrected by the FFM at the beginning and at the end of the study was 46 ± 6 e 35 ± 5 kcal/d/FFM (p<0,05) respectively and the REE corrected by the fat mass (FM) was 3 ± 6 e 30 ± 5 kcal/d/FM (p<0,05) respectively. The data found in this study does not allow affirming that the use of HB equation to predict REE in female grade III obese subjects is reliable. But the data suggest that immediately after using a hypo caloric diet, the REE calculated using HB equation and real weight is reliable. When calculating the REE of female grade III obese patients undergoing a free diet using HB equation, the obtained value should be increased in 20 %.
