Vision Based Station-Keeping for the Unmanned Underwater Vehicle

Lee, Chen-wei 01 August 2008 (has links)
Station-Keeping is an important capability of the Unmanned Underwater Vehicle in a variety of mission , including inspection and repair of undersea pipeline , and surveillance . Station-Keeping control includes two parts : motion estimation and Station-Keeping control system . In this thesis we propose a monocular vision system for determining the motion of an Unmanned Underwater Vehicle . The vehicle is equipped with a down-looking camera , which provides images of the sea-floor . The motion of vehicle is estimated with a feature-based mosaicking method which requires the extraction and the matching of relevant features . We designed a visual servo control system for maintaining the position of vehicle relative to a visual landmark , while maintaining a fixed depth .

Shell Use in the Mimbres Region: Not so Black and White

Heacock, Erikalyn Karen Bassaraba January 2015 (has links)
The Harris site (A.D. 500-1000) is an unusual Mimbres site because it has a Late Pithouse period component with no overlying Classic period pueblo. The excavations by the University of Las Vegas-Nevada (UNLV) were conducted at this site between 2007 and 2013. Shell artifacts, and their role in the Mimbres area, have not been extensively studied. I analyzed shell data from the UNLV field school, combined with Haury's excavated shell assemblage from his work at the site in the 1930's to interpret the role of shell at the Harris site. More specifically, I look at the role shell may have played in the ritual life of Mimbres society. Using context, artifact form, and co-occurring assemblage materials illuminates how shell was used in ritual practice. My methodology includes recording specific information about the shell, including, but not limited to: context, condition (i.e., burnt vs. unburnt), description, measurements, artifact form, genus, and species if the shell is identifiable to that degree. Using this methodology allows me to observe patterns and infer whether specific artifact forms and/or genera correlate with certain contexts. Observing these patterns, I seek to observe the ritual practices in which shell was incorporated. I use Bell (1992, 1997) and Bradley’s (2010) framework on ritual, which posits that ritual-like behavior has marked characteristics and occurs in a variety of quotidian and sacred contexts, which suggests a continuum rather than a dichotomy in the use of these spaces. To further understand the use of shell in ritual practices, looking at spatial and diachronic data is imperative. Therefore, five other sites along the Mimbres River have been chosen for comparison. These sites include Pithouse and Classic period components. This comparison allows me to investigate how shell use changed over time in the Mimbres region. The comparative sites include: NAN Ranch (A.D. 600/650-1150), Mattocks Ruin (A.D. 750/800-1130), Galaz Ruin (A.D. 550-1130), Swarts (A.D. 950-1150), and the Old Town site (A.D. 750-1150).

A Worldview Analysis of Sam Harris' Philosophical Naturalism in The Moral Landscape: How Science Can Determine Human Values

Blackaby, Mike 23 December 2016 (has links)
The atheistic worldview has, ironically, experienced a sort of “re-birth” in modern times. The “New Atheists,” of which Sam Harris is a prominent spokesperson, have made no secret of their desire to make converts to their worldview, liberating people from the false and repressive shackles of religion. It is their desire to officiate the funeral of religion, and usher in a new era governed by reason and science. Harris, in his book The Moral Landscape: How Science Can Determine Human Values, seeks to naturalize ethics through the means of science, so that religion might lose its grasp on a stronghold it has held for centuries. In so doing, he presents an ethical system based on the worldview of philosophical naturalism, which leaves no room for a divine foot in the door. His ethical system is supported by several presuppositional pillars, including an unwavering belief in Darwinian evolution, a neo-Aristotelian concept of well-being, a commitment to strict determinism, a confidence in moral realism, and the belief that science and religion are in irresolvable conflict with each other as modes of seeking truth. This dissertation seeks to analyze Harris’ naturalistic worldview by inspecting these five pillars as the foundation upon which his ethical system stands. In the famous words of Francis Schaeffer, I attempt to “take the roof off” of Harris’ worldview, in order to analyze the philosophical ideas he espouses. It is my assertion that Harris ultimately fails to properly defend the controversial claims his book makes, as the most important points he makes are not actually scientific at all, but philosophical. Although he approaches the issue as a scientist, his arguments rely on philosophical presuppositions of which science can only be applied a posteriori. If this is true, it is a positive force for Christian apologetics, as the Christian worldview may continue to be a valid alternative to the philosophical naturalism Harris espouses.

Padronização do gasto metabólico de repouso e proposta de nova equação para uma coorte feminina brasileira / Standardization of resting metabolic rate and proposal of a new equation for a Brazilian female cohort

Almeida, Alessandra Escorcio Rodrigues 17 December 2010 (has links)
Independently on the primary cause, an imbalance in the energy balance is always involved. Thus, the precise calculation of the energy requirements of the patient is of great importance. Several studies show that commonly used equations for estimation of resting metabolic rate (RMR), the main component of total energy expenditure, tend to overestimate its value, which could impair the clinical treatment of obesity. The goal of this study is to standardize the RMR of a Brazilian adult female cohort, with results of tests of indirect calorimetry (IC). In order to do so, 760 tests of IC performed in Brazilian females patients aged between 18 and 65 years old, were used. The results were charted, the population distributed according to quintiles of weight and the statistical analyses applied. The RMR average fluctuated between 1226 and 1775 calories. Harris-Benedict equation overestimated the RMR by 7%. From the correlation between the variables, we conclude that weight has a positive correlation with RMR and age a negative correlation. RMR and respiratory quotient (QR) can be use as obesity predictors. Two new equations were proposed in our study, one for population with BMI < 35kg/m2 and another for population with BMI 35 kg/m2

Translation Strategies of Food Items in the Lithuanian and French Versions of Joanne Harris'Gourmet Novel Chocolat / Joanne'os Harris gurmaniško romano "Šokoladas" valgių pavadinimų lietuviško ir prancūziško vertimo strategijos

Pakštaitė, Jurgita 05 August 2008 (has links)
The focus of the thesis is translation strategies of the food items introduced in the Lithuanian and French versions of Joanne Harris’ gourmet novel Chocolat (1999). The Lithuanian translation is made by Galina Baužytė-Čepinskienė (2004), while the French translation is produced by Anouk Neuhoff (2000). At the beginning, the new genre of fiction, particularly gastromance, or gourmet literature is defined as well as translation strategies of culture-specific items, specifically food, are described. In addition, the variety of translation methods examined by different scholars is introduced. The translation strategies proposed by Eirlys E. Davies (preservation and preservation as literary translation; addition and addition in the footnote; omission; globalization; localization (as specification, domestication or orthographical adaptation) as well as transformation and creation) are applied while analysing the translation of the food items in the novel. In order to highlight the significant grammatical aspects of the languages, the issues of the article usage and formation of syntactical structures are discussed. The food items are classified into two main categories: dishes and their ingredients and chocolate assortment and other types of dessert. The aim of the analysis is to examine the prevailing translation methods used in translation of the food items as well as to investigate whether Lithuanian and French translators tend to translate them differently or similarly.

Do canto xamânico e outras histórias: leituras de The Age of the Rainmakers, de Wilson Harris

Gabriel Cambraia Neiva 20 March 2015 (has links)
