Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit war es, den Einfluss verschiedener Schwefel (S)-Düngemittel, der Leguminosenart und des Gemengebaus von Erbse (Pisum sativum L.) und Gerste (Hordeum vulgare L.) auf die Schwefelakkumulation sowie den Ertrag der Ackerbohne (Vicia faba L.), Schmalblättrige Lupine (Lupinus angustifolius L.) und Erbse zu erheben.
In den Jahren 2012 bis 2014 wurden Feldversuche auf zahlreichen Standorten durchgeführt, um die Wirkung von Kieserit (MgSO4), Gips (CaSO4), elementarem S und Bittersalz (MgSO4 × 7H2O) auf die Körnerleguminosen zu testen.
Die Düngung von Ackerbohne, Schmalblättriger Lupine und Erbse mit verschiedenen S-haltigen Düngemitteln führte unter den geprüften Feldbedingungen weder zu Ertragssteigerungen noch zu einer gesteigerten N-Akkumulation. Der S-Bedarf der drei Körnerlegunminosen wurde offenbar über natürliche Ressourcen gedeckt. Trotzdem zeigten sich Gips und Kieserit, teilweise auch Bittersalz als geeignete Düngemittel, um die S-Konzentration im Gewebe der Pflanzen zu erhöhen.
Die S-Akkumulation im Spross der Ackerbohne (5-17 kg S ha-1), Schmalblättrigen Lupine (5-15 kg S ha-1) und Erbse (2-13 kg S ha-1) war gering und wurde von den Pflanzen an deren Bedarf angepasst. Im Gegensatz zu Ackerbohne (SHI 0,65) und Erbse (SHI 0,63), die S vorwiegend im Korn akkumulierten, sammelte die Schmalblättrige Lupine einen Großteil des aufgenommenen S im Stroh (SHI 0,40) an.
Der Einfluss des Gemengeanbaus mit Gerste auf den S-Haushalt der Erbse war sehr gering. Die Erbse in Reinsaat nahm signifikant mehr S gemittelt über alle getesteten Düngemittel auf als das Gemenge aus Erbse und Gerste. Erbse und Gerste akkumulierten ähnlich hohe Mengen S im Spross pro Einheit Kornertrag. Um maximale Kornerträge sowie N- und S-Akkumulationen in einem substitutiv zusammengesetzten Gemenge aus Erbse und Gerste zu erzielen, wurde ein optimales Saatverhältnis von 42-88% keimfähiger Erbsensamen zu 12-58% keimfähigen Gerstensamen der jeweiligen Reinsaatstärke ermittelt. / The objectives of this study were to evaluate the influence of different sulfur (S) containing fertilizers, the legume species and of intercropping of pea (Pisum sativum L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) on sulfur accumulation and yield of faba bean (Vicia faba L.), narrow leaf lupin (Lupinus angustifolius L.) and pea.
In the years 2012 to 2014 field trials have been conducted to test the effects of kieserite (MgSO4), gypsum (CaSO4), elemental S and epsom salt (MgSO4 × 7H2O) on grain legumes at several sites in Germany.
Under the given environmental conditions, fertilization of faba bean, narrow leaf lupin and pea with different S containing fertilizers did not increase yield and nitrogen (N) accumulation. The S demand of the three grain legumes was low and obviously covered by S sources from the soil as well as atmospheric S deposition. However, gypsum, kieserite and epsom salt generated noticeable increases in S concentration in parts of the plants.
S accumulation in shoots of faba bean (5-17 kg S ha-1), narrow leaf lupin (5-15 kg S ha-1) and pea (2-13 kg S ha-1) was comparatively low and has been adapted to the plants respective S demand. In contrast to faba bean (SHI 0,65) and pea (SHI 0,63), who accumulated S predominantly in seeds, narrow leaf lupin (SHI 0,40) accumulated the bulk of S in its straw.
The influence of barley on peas S concentration was very low. Pea in pure stands accumulated significantly more S than the total intercrop of pea and barley, whereas pea and barley accumulated similar amounts of S in its shoots per unit seed yield. To achieve the maximum seed yield and maximum N and S accumulation in substitutive mixtures of pea and barley, a relative seed frequency of 42%–88% pea seeds to 12%–58% barley seeds of their monocrop seeding rate has been calculated to be optimal.

Growth Response of Mixed Native Grass Stands to Simulated Grazing In Mississippi: Forage Yield and Species DynamicsTemu, Vitalis Wilbald 06 August 2011 (has links)
Some native warm-season forage grasses [indiangrass (IG, Sorghastrum nutans), big bluestem (BB, Andropogon gerardii) and little bluestem (LB, Schizachyrium scoparium)] are gaining popularity for improving summer forage production and wildlife habitat in the southeastern USA. Paucity of information about appropriate harvest management limits their restoration success. An experiment was conducted to assess effects of harvest intervals (30-, 40-, 60-, 90 or 120-d) and harvest duration on forage yield and quality, plant growth, sward structure and botanical composition of their mixed stands at Bryan Farms, Clay County, MS. Total season forage was greatest for 30-d and more from first (8472 kg ha-1) than second year plots (7627 kg ha-1). Yield was reduced by up to 43% in the second harvest year. Forage quality (crude protein content and in vitro digestibility) decreased with lengthening of harvest interval and across the harvest season. Tiller weight increased while specific leaf area and relative growth rate decreased with lengthening of harvest interval in first and second year plots. Harvesting reduced sward heights the following May, but treatment did not affect sward heights. Season mean sward heights were shorter for short harvest intervals. Light interception was greatest in the control and decreased with shortening of harvest intervals. Continuous harvesting controlled Solidago canadensis, increased herbaceous forbs, and LB, but decreased IG without substantial effect on BB. Rotational harvesting at 30- or 40-d intervals may improve forage production without compromising breeding cover during recovery. Studies on other management practices including fertilizer application and timing of harvest are needed.

The subject of “unreached people” is still debated in Christian circles. Given the vast resources of the Church, it is difficult to understand that there are still people unreached by the gospel. This study views that part of the reason for this is that there is an unequal distribution of Christian mission resources. It thus critically examines the reasons that have been advanced to explain this unequal distribution. Next, it makes an in-depth study of one particular church in Zambia, namely the Pentecostal Assemblies of God (Zambia), which has more than 1400 congregations across the country, by looking at the initiatives it has taken towards reaching the unreached. Chapter 5 reveals that the lack of a clear mission policy and the autonomy of congregations contribute to an unequal distribution of mission resources in the PAOG (Z). ties in closely with the broader problem of automating and streamlining the various activities
in the sugar supply chain. In this dissertation, the problem of providing decision support with
respect to sugarcane harvesting decisions is defined within a number of contexts, each representing
a typical kind of organisation of sugarcane farmers into a cohesive decision making unit with
its speci fic requirements and limitations that exist in practice. A number of variations relevant
to these contexts of an overarching tactical sugarcane harvest scheduling problem (THSP) are
considered and solved in this dissertation. The THSP is the problem of providing objective,
responsible decision support to persons charged with the task of determining optimal harvesting
dates for a set of sugarcane fields across an entire season.
Sugarcane fields typically diff er in terms of the age, variety, life-cycle stage and in many other
properties of the cane grown on them. The growth of sugarcane crops may also be a ffected
by environmental conditions such as accidental fires, frosts or storms which have a detrimental
e ffect on crop-value. Since sugarcane is a living organism, its properties change over time,
an so does the potential pro t associated with it. The practicalities of farming cause further
complication of the problem (for example, seasonal changes alter the conditions under which
the crop is harvested and transported). The rainy season carries with it the added cost of
disallowing long-range vehicles to drive into the fields, forcing the unloading and reloading of
cane at so-called loading zones. Other considerations, such as the early ploughing out of fields to
allow them to fallow before being replanted, compounds the THSP into a multi-faceted difficult
problem requiring efficient data management, mathematical modelling expertise and efficient
computational work.
In the literature the THSP has been viewed from many different standpoints and within many
contexts, and a variety of operations research methodologies have been employed in solving
the problem in part. There is, however, no description in the literature of a solution to the
THSP that takes the negative e ffects of extreme environmental conditions on the quality of
a harvesting schedule into account in a scienti fically justifi able manner; most models in the
literature are based on optimising sucrose yield alone under normal conditions, rendering weak
schedules in practice. The scope of the modelling and solution methodologies employed in this
dissertation towards solving the THSP is restricted to integer programming formulations and
approximate solution methods. The parameters associated with these models were determined
empirically using historical data, as well as previous work on deterioration of sugarcane following
environmental and other events.
The THSP is solved in this dissertation by designing a generic architecture for a conceptual
decision support system (DSS) for the THSP in the various contexts referred to above, which
is capable of accommodating the e ects of extra-ordinary environmental conditions, as well as
the introduction of a computer-implemented version of a real DSS for the THSP conforming to the framework of this generic architecture. The DSS building blocks include prediction
models for sugarcane yield, sugarcane recoverable value under normal circumstances, the costs
associated with a harvesting schedule and the negative e ects on sugarcane recoverable value of
extraordinary environmental conditions. The working of the DSS is based on a combinatorial
optimisation model resembling the well-known asymmetric traveling salesman problem with
time-dependent costs which is solved approximately by means of an attribute-based tabu search
in which both local and global moves have been incorporated. The DSS is also validated by
experienced sugarcane industry experts in terms of the practicality and quality of the schedules
that it produces. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Gerekenariseerde besluitsteun vir die skedulering van suikerriet-oeste is 'n aktiewe navorsingsveld
wat nou verwant is aan die bre ër probleem van die outomatisering en vaartbelyning van 'n
verskeidenheid aktiwiteite in die suikervoorsieningsketting. Die probleem van die daarstelling
van steun rakende suikkerriet oestingsbesluite word in hierdie proefskrif in 'n aantal kontekste
oorweeg, elk met betrekking tot 'n tipiese soort organisasie van suikerrietboere in 'n samehorige
besluitnemingseenheid met sy spesi eke vereistes en beperkings in die praktyk. Verskeie variasies
van 'n oorkoepelende taktiese suikerriet-oesskeduleringsprobleem (TSOSP) wat in hierde kontekste
relevant is, naamlik die probleem om objektiewe, verantwoordbare steun aan besluitnemers
te bied wat verantwoordelik is vir die bepaling van optimale oesdatums vir 'n versameling

brande, ryp of storms, het verder ook 'n negatiewe impak op die waarde van suikerriet op
sulke plantasies. Omdat suikerriet 'n lewende organisme is, verander die eienskappe daarvan oor
tyd, en so ook die potensi ele wins wat daarmee geassosieer word. Boerderypraktyke bemoeilik
verder die skeduleringsprobleem onder beskouing (seisoenale veranderings beïnvloed byvoorbeeld
die wyse waarop suikerriet ge-oes en vervoer word). Addisionele koste gaan voorts met die
re ënseisoen gepaard, omdat die plantasies dan nie toeganklik is vir langafstand transportvoertuie
nie en suikerriet gevolglik na spesiale laaisones gekarwei moet word voordat dit op hierdie
voertuie gelaai kan word. Ander oorwegings, soos die vroe ë uitploeg van plantasies sodat die

Characterization of Forest Harvest Residue from the Great Lakes-St Lawrence Forests of South-eastern OntarioAcquah, Gifty Ewurama 14 December 2010 (has links)
The use of fossil derived products and the environmental and economic problems associated with them have made a shift to abundant renewable resources such as forest biomass more attractive. However before forest biomass can be used as a resource, its properties must be known.
This study determined the physical properties of heterogeneous biomass residues produced during harvesting on two operational forest sites within the Great Lakes-St Lawrence forest of south-eastern Ontario. Properties measured were moisture content, size distribution, bulk density, and wood-to-bark ratio; also thermo-chemical properties including elemental composition, thermal reactivity and energy content were measured. The effects of forest site and harvest type, storage and position in storage pile, on the properties of biomass were also investigated.
Results of the study showed that the various heterogeneous forest harvest residues differed more physically than thermo-chemically for the different variables, and this affected biomass procurement more than the potential utilization options.
