________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The Dissertation presented investigated the roles that knowledge produced by historians can exercise according to the historian and theoretical literature of historiography and Hayden White. The first chapter briefly outlines his theory of historiographic speech, emphasizing aspects relevant to understand the object of this work. The second chapter discusses the functions that should be avoided by historiography. The third presents the functions that historiography can exercise, listing them on the theory of speech historiographic (chap. 1) and the cognitive functions of the story refuted by White (chap. 2). In the last section, sought summed up what has been previously exposed and questioned some aspects of the proposal whiteana. From this, the main idea is to argue in favour of limiting epistemic the discourse produced by historians, which would, in turn, use it, certain ways, to help the men of this in the resolution of their problems. Thus, what would the historiography assert itself in the past with a view to the present and play such a role would be or what their condition cognitively limited.

(1973), "Trópicos do Discurso" (1978), "O Conteúdo da Forma" (1987) e "Realismo
Figural" (1999).
Marvick (1995), George Iggers (2000) e Dirk Moses (2005). _______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The dissertation presents the four main books of Hayden White: "Metahistory" (1973),
"Tropics of Discourse" (1978), "The Content of the Form" (1987) and "Figural Realism" (1999). The first four chapters were named, respectively, after the titles of each one of Hayden White's books, and are presented according to the chronological criterion of the years of their respective publication. By the end of each one of the four chapters, some reviews of other authors over Hayden White's conclusions in his books are presented. The fifth chapter, entitled "Four Polemics with Hayden White", presents
four direct debates that he wages against four of his many critics, also presented in order respecting the different years in which these discussions took place: Roger Chartier (1993), Arthur Marvick (1995), George Iggers (2000) and Dirk Moses (2005).

(Re)presenting the Past: Historiographical and Theoretical Implications of the Historical DocudramaMcKeown, Luke Daniel January 2008 (has links)
This thesis contributes to the growing body of scholarship surrounding historical and filmic representations of the past. Moreover, it seeks to further the understanding and practical use of this sub-field in history by examining two films: Amistad (1997); and, The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006). Building on the insistence of scholars such as Robert Rosenstone and Hayden White, this thesis seeks to evaluate historical films on their own terms as representations of the past that must be judged according to their own conventions. Cinema's attraction to historical subjects is not a recent phenomenon. However, the past two decades, have seen a marked increase in the academic critique of 'historical films' - most notably Hollywood features and television documentaries. Moreover, the appetite of the general public for filmic treatment of historical topics continues unabated. While it is agreed that historical film cannot be judged according to the criteria used in accessing traditional modes of historical representation, there is little agreement about what criteria, precisely, should be used in evaluating historical films' historical attributes and implications. This thesis commences with a general theoretical and methodological survey of the literature in this relatively new sub-field. It then analyses the film Amistad and its reception and criticism amongst historical professionals. This analysis, coupled with the findings of the first chapter, forms the basis for an original and independent review of The Wind That Shakes the Barley, a film that has not yet been widely critiqued by historians. The thesis suggests how historical films may be fruitfully evaluated in ways that are sympathetic both to the peculiar exigencies of the medium and the traditional concerns of historical scholarship.

In the Wilderness: Federal Labor in OppositionLavelle, Ashley, n/a January 2004 (has links)
This thesis is a study of the federal Australian Labor Party (ALP) in Opposition. It seeks to identify the various factors that shape the political direction of the party when it is out of office by examining three important periods of Labor Opposition. It is argued in the first period (1967-72) that the main factor in the partys move to the left was the radicalisation that occurred in Australian (and global) politics. Labor in Opposition is potentially more subject to influence by extra-parliamentary forces such as trade unions and social movements. This was true for this period in the case of the reinvigorated trade union movement and the Anti-Vietnam War Movement, whose policy impacts on the ALP under Gough Whitlam are examined in detail. While every one of the party's policies cannot be attributed to the tumult of the period, it is argued that Labor's Program embodied the mood for social change. The second period (1975-83) records a much different experience. After Labor's Dismissal from office in November 1975, the enduring conclusion drawn by the party was that it had failed in government as economic managers, and that in future it would need to embrace responsible economic management and to jettison programmatic-style reform. This conclusion was accepted and argued by both federal leaders during this time, Gough Whitlam (1975-77) and Bill Hayden (1977-83). The thesis argues that the key reason for Labor's abandonment of reformist politics was the dramatic shift in the economic context wrought by the collapse of the post-war boom in 1974, which undermined the economic basis of the Program. The degree to which 'economic responsibility' governed Labor's approach to policy-making is highlighted through case studies of uranium mining and the Prices-Incomes Accord. The final period of Opposition (1996-2001) commences with the partys landslide defeat at the 1996 Federal Election. Under the leadership of Kim Beazley, the party continued in the pro-free market policy tradition of Labor Prime Ministers Bob Hawke and Paul Keating. In conjunction with this, it employed a 'small-target' strategy that pitched its electoral success on community anger towards the government, rather than any alternative policies of the Opposition. The free-market policy continuity is set in the context of the ideological effects of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the collapse of the Soviet Bloc, in the aftermath of which all political players accepted that there was no real alternative to the market. Furthermore, the overall state of the Australian and world economies was not conducive to a return to 'tax and spend' policies. The partys bipartisanship on globalisation and economic rationalism effectively robbed it of an alternative political approach to that of the Coalition. Thus, in a sense it was hemmed into the 'small-target' strategy. The thesis concludes by comparing and contrasting the three periods, and assigning weight to the various factors that shape Labor in Opposition.
