ARECA PALM SHEATH: A PLANT-BASED MATERIAL ALTERNATIVE TO PLASTICS FOR FOODWARE PRODUCTS

Debapriya Pinaki Mohanty (11797322) 19 December 2021 (has links)
<div>The proliferation of single-use plastics in the foodware and packaging sector has stimulated interest in sustainable material substitutes that can be processed efficiently and which possess sufficient structural integrity. Herein, we study the structure, mechanical response and diffusion properties of leaf-sheath from a representative palm species—<i>Areca catechu</i>—widely cultivated in the Indian sub-continent and Southeast Asia. The study of this material system, and the specific attributes, are motivated by the use of this material in foodware applications. Foodware such as plates and bowls can be produced from the areca sheath, directly, in a single step, by stretch forming analogous to sheet metals. The material is eco-friendly, biodegrading in ~100 days. Formability and water diffusion are two key attributes of relevance for foodware, since the former attribute determines the shape change capability of the material and range of producible shapes; and the latter, foodware product (structural) integrity and life.<br></div><div><br></div><div>We characterize the morphology (external structure) and anatomy (internal structure) of the sheath using imaging techniques and composition analysis. The sheath is shown to resemble a composite material, with structural characteristics intermediate between those of the palm leaf and stem. By measuring the mechanical response of the sheath to various types of 1D and 2D loading (e.g., uniaxial tension and compression, biaxial stretching, rolling), and hydration conditions, we show that the sheath material has high stretch-formability, especially when hydrated. This formability is similar to that of the most ductile sheet metals. The formability is shown to be further enhanced by addition of small quantities of NaOH (~5%) during hydration. Local deformation measurements in biaxial stretching, based on analysis of distortion of grid-markers inscribed onto sheath samples, have enabled characterization of strain-field anisotropy and mode of failure in the sheath. By consolidating the mechanical test results, we present a forming limit diagram for the leaf-sheath.<br></div><div><br></div><div>The structural integrity and life of foodware products produced from the leaf-sheath are directly determined by diffusion of liquids (e.g., water, oils) through the sheath wall thickness. Water and oils are important constituents of semi-solid and solid foods. Diffusion of water is also important for designing the hydration cycle to enhance formability. The diffusion of water through the sheath material process is studied using mass gain measurements and<i> in situ</i> imaging of water transport.<br></div><div><br></div><div>We determine the diffusion coefficient for water, which is critical for estimating product life. The diffusion coefficient for the matrix is shown to be one order of magnitude greater than for the fiber. We vary salt concentration in the water by controlled additions of NaCl and note a non-monotonic dependence of the diffusion on concentration. By subjecting the leaf-sheath to a short-time (~ 3 minutes) thermal treatment (~ 800C), a hydrophobic wax layer can be made to secrete onto the leaf surface. This wax coating is found to significantly reduce the water diffusion, enabling the sheath foodware life to be increased. <br></div><div><br></div><div>Lastly, we argue, that since the leaf-sheath is a “waste product” of the palm, it has negligible embodied energy (4 to 5 orders of magnitude smaller) compared to paper and plastics based foodware.<br></div><div><br></div><div>We discuss the implications of the results for single-step forming of high-aspect ratio products and structures from the palm sheath, methods to reduce diffusion of liquids and improve foodware product life, and some directions for future research into mechanical behavior of plant leaf materials from a forming perspective.<br></div>

Totally p-adic Numbers of Degree 4

Ault, Melissa Janet 09 December 2021 (has links)
In this thesis, we extend results of Emerald Stacy to compute an upper bound on the minimal height of a totally p-adic algebraic integer of degree 4 independent of p. We also compute actual values of the minimal height of a totally p-adic algebraic integer of degree 4 for small primes p.

Interpretace výškopisu na topografických mapách USA / Interpretation of altitude on topographic maps USA

Pavelková, Zuzana January 2013 (has links)
The thesis aims to analyze the altitude interpretation of the topographic maps of the U.S. and to compare them with Czech topographic maps. I have obtained the source materials for completion of the thesis during the Work and Travel exchange program in the U.S. in 2012, which also inspired me to deal with this thesis topic. The most important producer of U.S. topographic maps is the national company United States Geological Survey, which uses the U.S. customary units based on the Anglo-American measurement system that make a significant difference when interpreting the altitude of U.S. topographic maps and Czech ones. The fact that American society does not use the metric system very much, results in the use of map scales that are unique and very unusual for topographic maps. Another important producer is the company Army Map Service. Since the U.S.A. and the Czech Republic are both member states of North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the production of military topographic maps strictly adheres to the NATO standards.

Růst českých pacientů s achondroplázií a možnosti predikce růstu jednotlivých tělesných segmentů / The growth of Czech patients with achondroplasia and the possibilities of predicting the growth of individual body segments

Anýžová, Tereza January 2018 (has links)
Introduction: Achondroplasia is the most common bone dysplasia. It is caused by mutations in the FGFR3 gene, which is involved in regulation of proliferation and maturation of chondrocytes on the growth plates. Activating mutation results in impaired endochondral ossification and a wide range of symptoms: severe growth disorder with limb shortening, macrocephaly with risk of hydrocephalus, mid-facial dysplasia, sleep apnea, narrowing of the spinal canal, increased risk of respiratory complications, and airway inflammation. The current rapid technological development has led to a better understanding of the processes of epiphyseal growth cartilage, thus enabling the development of new drugs for the treatment of this disorder (modified CNP, soluble FGFR3, meclozine). Nevertheless, current treatment is primarily symptomatic. It is very important to have a growth patterns of patients with achondroplasia who have not been affected by any growth promoting treatment (prolongation surgery, growth hormone). Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate the growth of Czech patients with achondroplasia, to compare our data with the world-wide used data by Horton et al. (1978) and the current data by del Pino et al. (2018). The next aim was to verify the accuracy of the multiplier method of final height...

On the Complexity of the Relative Inclusion Star Height Problem

Kirsten, Daniel 06 February 2019 (has links)
Given a family of recognizable languages L1, . . . ,Lm and recognizable languages K1 ⊆ K2, the relative inclusion star height problem means to compute the minimal star height of some rational expression r over L1, . . . ,Lm satisfying K1 ⊆ L(r) ⊆ K2. We show that this problem is of elementary complexity and give a detailed analysis its complexity depending on the representation of K1 and K2 and whether L1, . . . ,Lm are singletons.

Distortional Lateral Torsional Buckling of Doubly Symmetric Wide Flange Beams

Arizou, Ramin 16 December 2020 (has links)
Distortional lateral-torsional buckling theories assume that the flanges remain undistorted, while the web is free to distort as a thin plate. Most theories adopt a cubic polynomial distribution along the web height to relate the lateral displacement of the web to the displacements and angles of twist both flanges. The present study develops a family of finite element solutions for the distortional buckling of wide flange beams in which the flanges are assumed to remain undistorted. In contrast to past theories, the lateral displacement distribution along the web height is characterized by superposing (a) two linear modes intended to capture the classical non-distortional lateral-torsional behavior and (b) any number of user-specified Fourier terms intended to capture additional web distortion. In the longitudinal direction, all displacement fields characterizing the lateral displacements are taken to follow a cubic distribution. The first contribution of the thesis develops a finite element formulation that is able to replicate the classical non-distortional lateral torsional buckling solutions when the distortional modes are suppressed while enabling more accurate predictions for distortional lateral torsional buckling compared to those solutions based on the conventional cubic interpolation of the lateral displacement. The formulation is used to conduct an extensive parametric study to quantify the reduction in critical moments due to web distortion relative to the classical non-distortional predictions in the case of simply-supported beams, cantilevers, and beams with an overhang. The solution is then used to generate interaction curves for beams with an overhang subjected to various proportions of uniformly distributed and point loads. The second contribution of the thesis adds two additional features to the formulation (a) to capture the destabilizing effect due to the load height relative to the shear center and (b) a module that incorporates any number of user-defined multi-point kinematic constraints. The additional features are employed to investigate the effect of load height, bracing height, and combined effects thereof in practical design problems. A distortional indicator is then introduced to characterize the distribution of web distortion along the beam span as the beam undergoes distortional lateral buckling. A systematic design optimization technique is then devised to identify the location(s) along the span at which the addition of transverse stiffeners would maximize the critical moment capacity.
