Prevalence of and Risk Factors for Anal Human Papillomavirus in Heterosexual Men

Nyitray, Alan Gaspar January 2008 (has links)
Introduction: The incidence of anal cancer, whose primary cause is human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, has increased in United States (US) men almost three-fold in three decades; however, little is known about the epidemiology of anal HPV, especially in heterosexual men. Furthermore, advancements in knowledge about the epidemiology of anal HPV may be hampered by measurement error in the collection of sexual behavior data. Methods: From two US cities, behavioral data and anal biological specimens were collected from 253 men who acknowledged sexual intercourse with a woman in the previous year. PCR and genotyping were used to assess the presence of HPV DNA. In addition, two HPV questionnaires were assessed for test-retest reliability: the first was a self-administered questionnaire associated with the collection of the biological specimens while the second was a computer-assisted self-interview (CASI) with 1069 men in Brazil, Mexico, and the US. Results: Based on DNA analysis, overall anal HPV prevalence was 24.8% in 222 men who acknowledged no prior sexual intercourse with men. Risk factors independently associated with anal HPV were lifetime number of female sexual partners and frequency of sex with females in the past month. Based on kappa and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), both HPV questionnaires were found to be highly reliable with low refusal rates; however, three discrete measures in the multi-national interview asking for the number of sexual partners had lower reliability. The ICC of these questions increased to greater than or equal to 0.79 when a small number of extreme outliers (less than or equal to 3) were removed. Predictors of unreliable reporting were age and lifetime number of female sexual partners while years of education was inversely associated with unreliable reporting. Discussion: These results suggest anal HPV is common in heterosexual men. Risk factors associated with anal HPV did not explain how HPV was transmitted to the anal region. Both instruments used to collect sexual behavior data were highly reliable including the CASI instrument used in three culturally and linguistically distinct countries; however, caution is warranted with discrete measures that ask participants to report the number of sexual partners.

The narratives of romantic jealousy in the context of infidelity for homosexual and heterosexual adult men in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Delport, Zhel-Ann 05 September 2014 (has links)
This research aimed to explore the narratives of romantic jealousy in the context of infidelity for heterosexual and homosexual men from Johannesburg South Africa. This study takes on a qualitative approach using a narrative analysis in combination with a structural and thematic content analysis. The narratives of the heterosexual and homosexual men revealed the role which jealousy plays in every relationship, and how it can affect the emotions and behaviours of both partners. This study found that the narratives of these men were in contradiction to what evolutionary theories as well as past research on the topic have suggested. Evolutionary perspectives propose that heterosexual men are more inclided to sexual infidelity, this was however found to be in contradiction to the beliefs and ideas held by the participants of this study. Heterosexual participants of this study reported that for them emotional infidelity would be more jealousy provoking, as it would be a sure indication that the relationship would end. Past research findings on the other hand have suggested that homosexual males are more inclined to emotional infidelity, as they do not face the risk of cuckholdry. However the same can not be said for the narratives of the homosexual participants of this study. The narrative of all except for one homosexual participant indicated that homosexual men felt that they would be greatly affected by sexual infidelity rather than emotional infidelity. There explanations revolved around the open ended nature and ease of access to sex which is prevalent in the gay community. It is also important to note that simmilarly to the heterosexual group, most of the participnats who experienced sexual jealousy also experienced sexual infidelity. Indicating a link between the type of infidelity you experience to the type of jealousy you feel. This research identified that heterosexual participants felt that in their live stories they found emotional jealousy to be the worst apsect of infidelity while homosexual men felt that sexual jealousy was the worst aspect of infidelity.

Contemporary Paganism in America : the role of heterosexual and homosexual males in a female oriented religion

Smith, Rachael D. January 2006 (has links)
This study explores the origins and development of one of America's largest alternative religions, contemporary Paganism, while placing emphasis on the roles of homosexual and heterosexual males within a movement that is dominated by women and focused on a Goddess, rather than a God. This gendered examination demonstrates contemporary Paganism's roots in the counterculture movement of the 1960s, and investigates how rituals have changed for boys within the movement, as well as ritual modification among homosexual males. This study reveals a reverse sexism among contemporary Pagan women toward males within the community and how this group is still working toward understanding and acceptance between the sexes. With an ever growing presence and over 300, 000 contemporary Pagans in the United States to date, this religious group adds to the changing contours of American religion.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 47306 / Department of History

Masculine Gender Role Conflict and Psychological Well- Being: A Comparative Study of Heterosexual and Gay Men

Shepard, William D. 08 1900 (has links)
Masculine gender role conflict (MGRC) occurs when externally-imposed male gender role expectations have a negative impact on and consequences for men. The purpose of this study was to examine how men in a homogeneous setting (i.e., a college campus) compare on MGRC and psychological well-being, based on their self-identified sexual orientation. Utilizing canonical correlation analysis, 96 heterosexual men and 102 gay men were compared on four factors of MGRC (conflict between work and family, restrictive emotionality, restrictive affectionate behavior between men, and success, power, and competition) and five factors of psychological well-being (anger, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and attitudes toward seeking psychological help). Findings for the heterosexual men were highly consistent with previous studies on MGRC and psychological well-being in a college-age population. Findings for the gay men indicated they had more problems with MGRC and psychological well-being than college-age and older gay men surveyed in the one published study on gay men and MGRC. Gay men who were single also reported more problems with restrictive emotionality, anger, anxiety, and depression, and had lower self-esteem, than gay men who were in a relationship. Between group differences were few, with gay men reporting significantly less restrictive affectionate behavior between men than heterosexual men. There were no significant differences between the two groups on any of the psychological well-being variables, indicating that the gay men were no more pathological than the heterosexual men with respect to their psychological well-being. Overall, the psychological well-being of both populations was seen to suffer as a result of increased MGRC. Implications are discussed for psychological interventions with men who are bound by traditional male gender role stereotypes.

Att arbeta med heterosexuella män utsatta för våld i nära relationer : amerikansk hjälppersonals tankar och upplevelser / Working with heterosexual men exposed to violence in intimate relationships : thoughts and experiences by American help personnel

Almersson, Camilla, Karlsson, Cecilia January 2012 (has links)
