Electric Field Calculations on Dry-Type Medium Voltage Current Transformers

abstract: This research presents potential and electric field calculations on medium voltage (MV) epoxy insulated outdoor current transformers (CTs) using a numeri-cal calculation approach. Two designs of MV dry-type epoxy insulated CTs were modeled using 3D field simulation software COULOMB® 9.0. Potential and elec-tric fields were calculated based on boundary element method. Different condi-tions such as dry exterior surface, wet exterior surface and internal voids were considered. The research demonstrates that the presence of internal conductors in CTs results in a less severe surface electric field distribution when compared to outdoor insulators of the same voltage range and type. The high electric field near the exited end triple-point of the CT reduces. This remained true even under wet conditions establishing better outdoor performance of CTs than outdoor insulators which have no internal conductors. The effect of internal conductors on voids within the insulation structure was also established. As a down side, internal voids in CTs experience higher electric field stress than in conductor-less insulators. The work recognizes that internal conducting parts in dry type CTs improves their outdoor performance when compared to electrical equipment without internal conductors. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Partial Discharges: Experimental Investigation, Model Development, and Data Analytics

Insulation system is an inseparable part of electrical equipment. In this study, one of the most important aging factors in insulation systems known as partial discharge (PD) is targeted. PD phenomenon has been studied for more than a century and yet new technologies still demand the investigation of PD impact. Nowadays, electrification is penetrating into various fossil-fuel-based industries such as transportation system that demands the reliability of electrical equipment under various harsh environmental conditions. Due to the lack of knowledge on the behavior of insulation systems, research in this area is intensively needed. The current study probes into the partial discharge phenomenon from two aspects and the groundwork for both aspects are provided by experimentation of multiple PD types. In the first goal, a finite-element analysis (FEA) approach is developed based on measurement data to estimate electric field distribution. The FEA model is coupled with a programming scheme to evaluate PD conditions, calculate PD metrics, and perform statistical analysis of the results. For the second target, it is aimed to use deep neural networks to identify and discriminate different sources of PD. The measurement data are used to generate thousands of phase-resolved PD (PRPD) images that will be used for training deep learning models. To meet the characteristics of the dataset, a deep residual neural network is designed and optimized to discriminate PD sources in an accurate, stable, and time-efficient way. The outcome of this research enhances the reliability of electrical apparatus through a better understanding of the PD behavior and lays a foundation for automatic monitoring of PD sources. / Doctor of Philosophy / Electrical equipment functions properly when its conductive elements are electrically insulated. The science of dealing with insulation systems has become more prominent in recent years due to the novel challenges and circumstances introduced by the rapid electrification trend. As an instance, the electrification trend in transportation systems can impose a multitude of environmental, thermal, and mechanical constraints which were not traditionally considered. These new challenges have led to an accelerated deterioration rate of insulation materials. To address this concern, this study targets the experimentation and modeling of the main aging mechanism in electrical equipment known as partial discharge (PD). A numerical model based on finite-element analysis (FEA) is developed that agrees with the test results and can accurately predict the aging of insulating materials due to the PD phenomenon. Moreover, the growing interest toward electrification of the aviation industry (as a response to the climate change crisis) requires the study of insulating materials under low-pressure (high-altitude) conditions. Theoretical and experimental data confirm the more frequent occurrence of PDs and their higher intensity under low-pressure conditions. Safety of operation is the highest priority in airborne transportation, yet no study has addressed the condition monitoring system as a necessary asset of the electric aircraft. To address this research gap, this work develops a dielectric online condition monitoring system (DOCMS) that actively monitors the deterioration level of insulation using deep learning methods. Based on standardized measurements under low-pressure conditions, the data are preprocessed to train the deep neural network with the pattern of PD activities. The proposed scheme can achieve >82% with short-term signals emitted measured from the system.

Design and Development of a Power Modulator for Insulation Testing

Variable speed drives allow for more precise speed control of induction motors, are of high power factor, and offer fast response characteristics, compared to older technologies, such as motor-generator sets and eddy current clutches. However, due to the high switching frequencies as well as the high dV/dt in the output increased dielectric stresses are produced in the insulation system of the motor they supply. Due to the use of these solid state drives there have been concerns of premature failure in large, medium and high voltage, motors. To fully understand and deal with these concerns requires studying the degradation mechanisms, in the insulation system, caused by these drives; which, on an actual motor is both extremely costly as well as impractical. Therefore, coil samples which accurately represent the construction of the actual insulation system, must be aged and studied instead. In addition, to ideally replicate the aging process, the same waveform that the motor is subjected to must be applied to these samples. As a result of this requirement, a low power, two-level, high voltage PWM inverter has been built to replicate the most important characteristics of the output waveform of a variable speed drive. This power modulator allows for testing the insulation systems considering a real PWM waveform in which both the fast pulses and the fundamental low frequency are included. The results of these tests show that the effects of PWM waveforms cannot be entirely replicated by a unipolar pulse generator.

A Study of High Frequency Voltage Effects in Medium Voltage Cable Terminations

High-power voltage sourced converters(VSC’s) are becoming increasingly prevalent in modern transmission systems. These systems primarily use switching schemes generating kHz range harmonics, which may be magnified by one or more system resonances. Despite the high frequency harmonics, VSC systems widely use insulated equipment designed for operation at power frequencies; this includes critical substation components such as medium voltage polymeric cables and terminations. The stress grading systems of non-geometric (compact) cable terminations are susceptible to insulation degradation and eventual flashover failure, under high frequency harmonic stresses. As such, the present work studies high frequency voltage effects in cross-linked polyethylene cable terminations, and their relationship to stress grading (SG) design and material properties. Finite element modeling (FEM) has been used to analyze electric field and resistive heating in termination designs, in response to parametric variations in SG material properties. Experimental studies investigate thermal behaviour in a variety of commercial termination designs, using a high voltage, high frequency test setup developed to replicate conditions of high frequency harmonic resonance in a VSC system. The study results show that high frequency voltage application increases the electric field, resistive heating, and surface temperature rise, in non-geometric (compact) termination designs using field-dependant stress grading materials. Geometric (stress cone) designs are insensitive to high frequency harmonics; however, they have disadvantages compared to compact designs, making them a less practical long-term solution for high frequency applications. Among non-geometric designs, the field-dependent electrical conductivity σ (E), the permittivity ε, and the temperature dependencies of σ (E) and ε strongly influence the termination electrical and thermal behaviour under high frequency stress. Since thermal hotspots in cable termination SG areas may lead to material degradation and eventual failure, recommendations are made for an optimal non-geometric stress grading design, for terminations operating in environments where high frequency harmonics may be present.

The Impact of Harmonics on the Power Cable Stress Grading System

With the continuous growth of non-linear power electronic components and the increasing penetration of the distributed generation (DG), the potential for degradation in the power quality of the existing grid exists. There are concerns that the total harmonic distortion (THD) could reach unacceptable levels of 5% or higher. Moreover, there is additional potential of the presence of amplified harmonic components in the power network grid when the harmonic frequencies align with the resonant frequencies that are being injected by power electronic components of the DG. The above conditions could increase the electrical stresses on the insulation system of the power system components, and in particular, cable terminations are a concern. Standard cable terminations are designed to operate under power frequency in the power system network and their service life is considered accordingly. The research work aims to provide an understanding of the performance of the stress grading (SG) system of a commercial cable termination when the voltage waveform is distorted due to the presence of harmonics and when the high frequency and high dV/dt voltage waveforms are present from a typical power electronic drive. An aging experiment was performed for over a 600 hour time period using the pulse width modulated (PWM) high-voltage generator to quantify the impact of high frequency stress on SG system of cable termination. Furthermore, the cable termination was tested under power frequency, distorted voltage waveforms composed of fundamental and low order harmonics using an experiment setup that generate distorted voltage waveforms. Diagnostic techniques such as surface potential distribution measurements and surface temperature monitoring are used to analyze the termination performance. The surface tangential field is calculated based on the gradient of the termination surface potential as measured with an electrostatic voltmeter. The study shows that distorted voltage waveforms with high frequency and high dV/dt components, increase the electric field, resistive heating, and surface temperature rise in the terminations that use the field-dependent SG materials. The rise of electric field by as high as 27.1% and surface temperature rise of as high as 17C demonstrates the severity on the cable terminations. Such electric field enhancements for a period of time have a potential to initiate partial discharge that could lead to degradation of the termination. Moreover, surface temperature rise of 17 deg C could reduce the allowable ampacity of the cable conductor, reduce the short circuit levels, and reduce the feeder loading limits. The field-dependent electrical conductivity (σ(E,T)), permittivity (ε), and the temperature dependencies of (σ(E,T) and ε) have strong impact to degrade the electrical and thermal properties of the termination due to stress from the non-sinusoidal distorted voltage waveform. In order to minimize the surface temperature rise from the hotspot and electrical stress enhancement that eventually lead to insulation degradation and failure, the following recommendations are made for a suitable SG design for a termination to handle the severe voltage stress: Apply the capacitively graded termination in the grid where the distortion levels are low. Under the increased total harmonic distortion levels and HF components, resistively grading with higher degree of nonlinearity (achieved through the use of ZnO filler) is beneficial. The utilities could take preventive maintenance on medium voltage power cable accessories to prevent the termination failure before it actually occurs. Researchers could focus to resolve and minimize the rising power quality issues when the distribution generations are operated, improve the power electronic converters, and provide cost-effective harmonic filter solutions for harmonic mitigation.

Solar Powered High Voltage Energization For Vehicular Exhaust Cleaning : A Step Towards Possible Retrofitting In Vehicles

In the last few decades India has advanced socioeconomically due to the rapid growth of industries and automobile sector. This in turn increases the use of fossil fuel and diesel. The atmosphere gets polluted due to the harmful substances, which comes from the burning of fuel. These pollutants can be in the form of gaseous, liquid or solid particulate. Air pollution, both indoor and outdoor, is a significant cause of health problems worldwide. In the automobile sector diesel engine exhaust is the major contributor for the air pollution amounting to about 60%. Exhaust generally contains oxides of Carbon, Nitrogen, Sulfur, Soot, Oil mist etc. Due to the heavy consumption of diesel as a fuel there is an urgent need to control diesel exhaust. Successful control of emissions from combustion engines particularly from diesel engines is yet to be achieved. The conventional techniques which are available to control emission now are either difficult to operate or does not satisfy the stringent emission standards. Among the major pollutants of diesel exhaust NOx is one of the pollutants to be taken care of as it is the major contributor for acid rain, photochemical smog etc. Further the NOx cause health problems leading to respiratory diseases, pneumonia, asthma etc. Till date, despite improvement in aftertreatment technologies, diesel engine continues to emit large amounts of NOx. The failure of conventional techniques lead to the development of non-conventional techniques such as high voltage electric discharge based plasma which has already been proved to be economical and highly efficient in Industrial Electrostatic Precipitators. Till now all the research regarding control of NOx has been done at the laboratory level using conventional DC and rotary spark gap based high voltage power supply. However, this is not a feasible option for Automobiles. The objective of this thesis is, therefore, to design and fabricate a solar powered high voltage power supply to be retrofitted into a vehicle. This leads to the development of power supply which will be of smaller size & capable of supplying high voltage to the gas treatment reactor. In the present work emphasis has been made on the design and development of a DC/HVAC power unit based on switch mode power supply approach. The thesis mainly presents the following issues:  Design & fabrication of solar powered high voltage high frequency power supply for the production of Electric Discharge Plasma.  Actual diesel exhausts treatment with the Electric Discharge Plasma.  Exhaust treatment with conventional 3 way CAT.  Exhaust treatment with cascaded plasma & catalyst/adsorbent system  Comparative analysis. The high voltage power supply gives an output of 16kV peak to peak at 12.2 kHz with a 50W power rating. This high frequency high voltage is applied to the gas treatment reactor and studies on actual diesel exhaust cleaning were carried out. It was observed that there was substantial improvement in the NOx removal under this high frequency AC application when compared to conventional 3-way catalytic converter. Studies have also been carried out at different engine loads and a comparative analysis has been made by cascading the NTP with adsorbents & catalysts and results as discussed in detail.

Evaluation of Room Temperature Vulcanized (RTV) Silicone Rubber Coated Porcelain Post Insulators under Contaminated Conditions

abstract: This thesis concerns the flashover issue of the substation insulators operating in a polluted environment. The outdoor insulation equipment used in the power delivery infrastructure encounter different types of pollutants due to varied environmental conditions. Various methods have been developed by manufacturers and researchers to mitigate the flashover problem. The application of Room Temperature Vulcanized (RTV) silicone rubber is one such favorable method as it can be applied over the already installed units. Field experience has already showed that the RTV silicone rubber coated insulators have a lower flashover probability than the uncoated insulators. The scope of this research is to quantify the improvement in the flashover performance. Artificial contamination tests were carried on station post insulators for assessing their performance. A factorial experiment design was used to model the flashover performance. The formulation included the severity of contamination and leakage distance of the insulator samples. Regression analysis was used to develop a mathematical model from the data obtained from the experiments. The main conclusion drawn from the study is that the RTV coated insulators withstood much higher levels of contamination even when the coating had lost its hydrophobicity. This improvement in flashover performance was found to be in the range of 20-40%. A much better flashover performance was observed when the coating recovered its hydrophobicity. It was also seen that the adhesion of coating was excellent even after many tests which involved substantial discharge activity. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. Electrical Engineering 2013
