Terahertzová anténní pole pro komunikaci / Terahertz Antenna Arrays for Communications

The thesis is focused on the research of THz antenna arrays to be used for communications. Attention is turned to modeling metallic surfaces at THz frequencies, a proper characterization of gold conductivity, its relation to Drude model and corresponding measurements. Moreover, the best methods for modeling thin metallic layers (depending on the skin depth related to the metal thickness) are presented. An optimized element of a THz 2×2 antenna array designed for the application of communications is developed in a way that enables an expansion to a larger array. The expansion ability is demonstrated on a 4×4 antenna array which is presented in the thesis too. The designed antennas achieve parameters better than the state-of-art antennas. The presented antennas radiate circularly polarized wave at THz frequencies, operate in a wide bandwidth, have a high gain and are of a compact size. In the thesis, an 8×8 antenna array with a beam steering capability is presented. The main beam of the antenna array can be controlled in two dimensions. A high gain of the radiated circularly-polarized wave can be achieved that way. Different approaches to modeling antennas with thin metallic layers are compared and the best methods are recommended from the viewpoint of different requirements. The designed 2×2 and 4×4 antenna arrays are manufactured using a microfabrication technology. Each step of the fabrication is described in detail and discussed. The reflection coefficient at the input of antennas is measured and compared with simulations. Discrepancies in results are associated with surface roughness which is analyzed by a scanning probe microscope and a scanning electron microscope. By down-scaling the developed THz antenna, a low-profile high-gain antenna for Ka-band space applications is designed. The presented antenna achieves better results than state-of-art CubeSat antennas. The antenna performance is verified by a prototype to be operated at 9 GHz, and the radiation characteristics are experimentally confirmed.

Les résultats présentés dans cette thèse s’articulent autour de la synthèse d’observateurs de type grand gain pour des classes de systèmes non linéaires. Une classe de systèmes multi-entrées/multi-sorties non uniformément observables a tout d’abord été considérée et un observateur dont le gain est issu de la résolution d’une équation différentielle ordinaire de Lyapunov a été proposé. La convergence exponentielle de l’erreur d’observation sous-jacente a été établie sous une condition d’excitation persistante bien appropriée. La synthèse de l’observateur proposé a été ensuite reconsidérée pour prendre en compte l’échantillonnage et la présence de retard sur la sortie. L’observateur résultant de la resynthèse a une structure en cascade avec des systèmes en chaîne où le premier système de la cascade estime l’état retardé tandis que l’état du dernier système est une estimation de l’état instantané du système. La deuxième classe de systèmes considérée dans cette thèse est une forme normale observable multi-sorties comportant des incertitudes et dont la sortie est échantillonnée et retardée. Un observateur en cascade a été proposé pour l’estimation de l’état instantané du système. Les performances des différents observateurs proposés ont été illustrées à travers plusieurs exemples en simulation tout au long de de la thèse. / The results given in this thesis deal with the design of high gain observers forsome classes on nonlinear systems. A class of multi-inputs/multi-output non uniformlyobservable systems has been first considered and an observer the gain of which is issuedfrom the resolution of a Lyapunov ordinary differential equation has been proposed. Theexponential convergence of the underlying observation error has been established underan appropriate persistent excitation condition. The design of the proposed observerhas then been reconsidered in order to account for the sampling and delay processeswhich may occur on the output. The redesigned observer assumes a cascade structurewith chained systems where the head of the cascade is an observer for the delayedstate while the state of the last system in the cascade constitutes an estimation ofthe system actual state. The second class of systems considered in this thesis is amulti-outputs observable normal form involving some uncertainties and with a delayedsampled output. A cascade observer allowing the estimation of the system actual statehas been proposed. The performance and main properties of the proposed observershave been illustrated in simulation by considering many examples throughout thisthesis.

Design and Analysis of an adaptive λ-Tracking Controller for powered Gearshifts in automatic Transmissions

To meet the continuously increasing goals in vehicle fuel efficiency, a number of measures are taken in automotive powertrain engineering, such as the combination of electric drives and conventional combustion engines in hybrid vehicles or the increase in gear ratios. This development leads to more complex powertrain systems, such as automatic transmissions. At the same time, the need for complex control systems is increased to achieve this desired functionality. Automatic transmissions are controlled by an electro-hydraulic control unit that governs all operations such as gear shifting and starting. Since most of the control software is designed in the form of open-loop control, most of the operations have to be calibrated manually. Thus, there exists a large number of calibration parameters in the control software that have to be tuned individually for each combination of engine, transmission and vehicle model. This process is therefore time-consuming and costly. Hence, it would be advantageous to reduce the need for calibration and in the end shorten the development process for automatic transmissions by reducing software complexity while maintaining functionality and performance. The goal of this thesis is to replace parts of the control software responsible for conducting the gearshifts that require extensive tuning by implementing control systems that have no need for calibration: adaptive high-gain λ-tracking controllers. In order to obtain the control parameters, i.e., the feedback gains, without calibration, an adaption law is implemented that continuously computes these parameters during operation of the controller. Thus, calibration is no longer needed. Since the system has to be high-gain-stabilizable, an extensive system analysis is conducted to determine whether an adaptive λ-tracking controller can be implemented. A nonlinear model of the clutch system dynamics is formulated and investigated. As a result, high-gain stability is proven for the system class and validated in simulation. Following the stability analysis, the devised adaptive controller is implemented into the control software running on the series production transmission control unit. Extensive simulations with a comprehensive vehicle model running the extended transmission software are conducted to design and to test the adaptive controllers and their underlying parameters during transmission operation in order to evaluate the control performance. The control software containing the adaptive controller is then implemented in two distinct vehicles with different automatic transmissions equipped with series production control hardware for the purpose of hardware experiments and validation. The resulting reduction of calibration efforts is discussed.

Adaptative high-gain extended Kalman filter and applications / Le filtre de Kalman étendu à grand-gain adaptatif et ses applications

Le travail porte sur la problématique de l’observation des systèmes — la reconstruction de l’état complet d’un système dynamique à partir d'une mesure partielle de cet état. Nous considérons spécifiquement les systèmes non linéaires. Le filtre de Kalman étendu (EKF) est l’un des observateurs les plus utilisés à cette fin. Il souffre cependant d’une performance moindre lorsque l'état estimé n’est pas dans un voisinage de l'état réel. La convergence de l’observateur dans ce cas n’est pas prouvée. Nous proposons une solution à ce problème : l’EKF à grand gain adaptatif. La théorie de l’observabilité fait apparaître l’existence de représentations caractérisant les systèmes dit observables. C’est la forme normale d’observabilité. L’EKF à grand gain est une variante de l’EKF que l’on construit à base d’un paramètre scalaire. La convergence de cet observateur pour un système sous sa forme normale d’observabilité est démontrée pour toute erreur d’estimation initiale. Cependant, contrairement à l’EKF, cet algorithme est très sensible au bruit de mesure. Notre objectif est de combiner l’efficacit´e de l’EKF en termes de lissage du bruit, et la r´eactivit´e de l’EKF grand-gain face aux erreurs d’estimation. Afin de parvenir à ce résultat nous rendons adaptatif le paramètre central de la méthode grand gain. Ainsi est constitué l’EKF à grand gain adaptatif. Le processus d’adaptation doit être guidé par une mesure de la qualité de l’estimation. Nous proposons un tel indice et prouvons sa pertinence. Nous établissons une preuve de la convergence de notre observateur, puis nous l’illustrons à l’aide d’une série de simulations ainsi qu’une implémentation en temps réel dur. Enfin nous proposons des extensions au résultat initial : dans le cas de systèmes multi-sorties et dans le cas continu-discret. / The work concerns the “observability problem”—the reconstruction of a dynamic process’s full state from a partially measured state— for nonlinear dynamic systems. The Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is a widely-used observer for such nonlinear systems. However it suffers from a lack of theoretical justifications and displays poor performance when the estimated state is far from the real state, e.g. due to large perturbations, a poor initial state estimate, etc. . . We propose a solution to these problems, the Adaptive High-Gain (EKF). Observability theory reveals the existence of special representations characterizing nonlinear systems having the observability property. Such representations are called observability normal forms. A EKF variant based on the usage of a single scalar parameter, combined with an observability normal form, leads to an observer, the High-Gain EKF, with improved performance when the estimated state is far from the actual state. Its convergence for any initial estimated state is proven. Unfortunately, and contrary to the EKF, this latter observer is very sensitive to measurement noise. Our observer combines the behaviors of the EKF and of the high-gain EKF. Our aim is to take advantage of both efficiency with respect to noise smoothing and reactivity to large estimation errors. In order to achieve this, the parameter that is the heart of the high-gain technique is made adaptive. Voila, the Adaptive High-Gain EKF. A measure of the quality of the estimation is needed in order to drive the adaptation. We propose such an index and prove the relevance of its usage. We provide a proof of convergence for the resulting observer, and the final algorithm is demonstrated via both simulations and a real-time implementation. Finally, extensions to multiple output and to continuous-discrete systems are given.

A dual-band dual-polarized antenna for WLAN applications

The recent growth in the ambit of modern wireless communication and in particular WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) systems has created a niche for novel designs that have the capacity to send and/or receive arbitrary orthogonal polarizations. The designs should also be able to support dual-band functionality, while maintaining a compact structure. The first aim of this dissertation was thus to develop a dual-band single radiating element that can cover the 2.4 GHz (2.4 – 2.484 GHz) band and the 5.2 GHz (5.15 – 5.85 GHz) band for the IEEE 802.11b and IEEE 802.11a WLAN standards respectively. Dual-frequency elements such as stacked-, notched- and dichroic patches have been considered, but due to the size and the high cross-polarization levels associated with these designs, the design process was propelled towards various dipole and monopole configurations. The attributes of various designs were compared, where the double Rhombus antenna pregnant with dual-band and dual-polarization potential was used as basis in the development of the DBDP (Dual-Band Dual-Polarized) antenna design. The single-element design exhibited wide bandwidths, good end-fire radiation patterns and relatively high gain over the 2.4/5.2 GHz bands. A two-element configuration was also designed and tested, to firstly increase the gain of the configuration and secondly to facilitate the transformation of the dipole design into a dual-polarized configuration. The second aim of this dissertation was to develop a dual-polarized array, while making use of only two ports, each pertaining to a specific polarization and to implement the design on a single-dielectric-layer substrate. Most dual-polarized structures such as circular, square and annular microstrip antenna designs only support one band, where multi-dielectric-layer structures are the norm. The disadvantages associated with multi-layered designs, such as fabrication difficulties, high costs, high back lobes and the size of the arrays, further supported the notion of developing an alternative configuration. The second contribution was thus the orthogonal interleaving of the two-element array configurations, to address the paucity of single-dielectric-layer dual-band dual-polarized designs that can be implemented with only two ports. This design was first developed and simulated with the aid of the commercial software package CST Microwave Studio® and the results were later corroborated with the measured data obtained from the Compact Antenna Range at the University of Pretoria. AFRIKAANS : Die onlangse groei in die area van moderne draadlose kommunikasie en met spesifieke verwysing na DLAN (Draadlose Lokale Area Netwerk) stelsels, het ‘n nis vir nuwe ontwerpe geskep. Daar word van hierdie nuwe ontwerpe die kapasiteit verlang om verskeie ortogonale polarisasies te stuur en/of te ontvang in samewerking met dubbel-band eienskappe, terwyl ‘n kompakte struktuur nogsteeds aandag moet geniet. Die eerste doel met hierdie verhandeling was dus die ontwikkeling van ‘n dubbel-band enkel stralingselement wat instaat is om die 2.4 GHz (2.4 – 2.484 GHz) band en die 5.2 GHz (5.15 – 5.85 GHz) band wat as die IEEE 802.11b en die IEEE 802.11a DLAN standaarde respektiewelik bekend staan, te bedek. Dubbel-frekwensie elemente soos onder andere die gepakte-, merkkepie- en dichromatiese strook antenne was as moontlike oplossings ondersoek, maar die grootte en hoë kruispolarisasie wat gewoonlik met hierdie ontwerpe gepaard gaan, het die ontwerpsproses in die rigting van verskeie dipool en monopool konfigurasies gestoot. Die meeste dubble-polarisasiestrukture, soos onder andere die sirkulêre-, vierkantige- en ringvormige antenne ontwerpe, kan net een frekwensieband onderhou en word gewoonlik met behulp van meervoudige-diëlektriese-laagstrukture geimplementeer. Die negatiewe eienskappe soos onder andere die vervaardigingsmoeilikhede, hoë kostes, hoë teruglobbe en die grootte van die meervoudige-elementopstellings wat aan hierdie meervoudige-diëlektriese-laagontwerpe behoort, het verder die denkbeeld van ‘n alternatiewe konfigurasie bekragtig. Die tweede hoofbydrae was dus die ortogonale insleuteling van die twee-element meervoudige-elementopstelling konfigurasies om die geringheid van enkel-diëlektriese-laag dubbel-band dubbel-polarisasie ontwerpe, wat net met twee poorte geïmplementeer kan word, te adresseer. Contribution to the DC-AC conversion in photovoltaic systems : Module oriented converters / Contribution à l’étude de la conversion DC-AC dans des systèmes photovoltaïques : Convertisseurs orientés au module PV

Ces dernières années, un intérêt croissant pour les systèmes électroniques de puissance a été motivé par l'émergence de sources d'énergie distribuées et renouvelables raccordées aux réseaux électriques. Dans ce contexte, la nécessité de topologies de faibles puissances alimentées par quelques modules photovoltaïques, en évitant l'utilisation de transformateurs, a ouvert l'étude de convertisseurs spéciaux et l’étude des stratégies de commande associées afin d’assurer la stabilité, la fiabilité et un rendement élevé du dispositif. Une possible solution est d’utiliser un dispositif générique connu dans la littérature scientifique et commerciale comme « micro-onduleur » ou «convertisseur intégré au module » qui avec le module photovoltaïque définit un produit « plug and play » appelé "module AC".Ce travail est consacré à l'étude d'un micro-onduleur monophasé avec deux étapes sans transformateur raccordée au réseau. La topologie proposée est composé d’un convertisseur DC-DC non isolé élévateur avec un gain quadratique et un onduleur réducteur lié au réseau connectés en cascade. Le convertisseur DC-DC extrait en permanence la puissance maximale du module photovoltaïque malgré les changements dans les conditions environnementales. L'étape DC-AC injecte la puissance extraite par l'étape DC-DC dans le réseau et assure un niveau élevé de qualité de l’énergie. Les efforts de recherche de ce travail sont concentrés sur la mise au point de commandes utilisant comment base, la théorie de contrôle par mode de glissement, qui conduit à une mise en œuvre simple avec une description théorique complète validée á partir de simulations et expérimentations.Après avoir décrit l'état de l’art dans le premier chapitre, le manuscrit est divisé en quatre chapitres, qui sont dédiés respectivement à l’algorithme de recherche du point de puissance maximale (MPPT), á l’étape de conversion DC-DC, á l'étape de conversion DC-AC et finalement au micro-onduleur complet. Un nouvel algorithme de recherche extrémal du point de puissance maximale est développé (SM-ESC). Pour la étape DC-DC, le convertisseur élévateur quadratique avec seulement un interrupteur contrôlé est étudié utilisant le concept de résistance sans perte par mode de glissement (de l’acronyme anglais : Sliding-Mode Loss-Free-Resistor – SM-LFR) afin d’obtenir un gain de tension élevé avec un fonctionnement sûr et compatible avec l’algorithme MPPT. Pour la étape DC-AC, le convertisseur de pont complet est contrôlé comme un onduleur de source de puissance (de l’acronyme anglais : Power Source Inverter - PSI) en utilisant une commande par mode de glissement qui poursuit une référence sinusoïdale de courant de sortie. Cette commande est complétée par une boucle de régulation de la tension du bus DC qui assure une haute qualité d’énergie injectée dans le réseau. Enfin, les trois étapes constitutives sont fusionnées pour obtenir un micro-onduleur complètement contrôlé par la technique de mode de glissement, ce qui constitue le principal résultat et contribution de cette thèse. / These last years, a growing interest in power electronic systems has been motivated by the emergence of distributed renewable energy resources and their interconnection with the grid. In this context, the need of low power topologies fed by a few photovoltaic modules avoiding the use of transformers opens the study of special converters and the associated control strategies ensuring stability, reliability and high efficiency. A resulted generic device known in the commercial and scientific literature as “microinverter” or “module integrated converter” performs a plug and play product together with the PV module called an “AC module”.This work is devoted to the study of a transformer-less single-phase double-stage grid-connected microinverter. The proposed topology has a non-isolated high-gain boost type DC-DC converter and a non-isolated buck type DC-AC converter connected in cascade through a DC bus. The DC-DC converter permanently extracts the maximum power of the PV module ensuring at the same time a good performance coping with power changes introduced by the change in the environmental conditions. The DC-AC stage injects the power extracted by the DC-DC stage into the grid ensuring a high level of power quality. The research efforts focus on the involved control functions based on the sliding mode control theory, which leads to a simple implementation with a comprehensive theoretical description validated through simulation and experimental results.After giving the state-of-the-art in the first chapter, the manuscript is divided into four chapters, which are dedicated to the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT), the DC-DC stage and its control, the DC-AC stage and its control and the complete microinverter. A new Extremum Seeking Control (ESC) MPPT algorithm is proposed. The single-switch quadratic boost converter is studied operating as a Loss-Free-Resistor (LFR) obtaining a high DC output voltage level with a safe operation. The full-bridge converter is controlled as a Power Source Inverter (PSI) using a simple sliding-mode based tracking law, regulating the voltage of the DC bus and then ensuring a high power quality level in the grid connection. Finally, the three building blocks are merged to obtain a sliding mode controlled microinverter constituting the main result and contribution of the work

Analysis of high-voltage low-current DC/DC converters for electrohydrodynamic pumps

Moving parts cause vibrations and tend to wear out. In applications where maintenance is complicated, solutions without moving parts are therefore advantageous. Electrohydrodynamic pumps are such a solution. Instead of mechanical propulsion, they use strong electric fields to induce movement in a dielectric cooling liquid. These pumps require very little power, but to generate sufficiently strong electric fields, they need to be fed with very high voltage.  This project explored various methods for designing DC/DC-converters which fulfil the demands of an electrohydrodynamic pump. This was done by altering and combining existing topologies that were deemed to be relevant. The main method for testing and evaluation was by simulating in LTspice. The project also briefly investigated methods of overcurrent protection. This was relevant because gas bubbles in the cooling fluid can cause electric arcs which damage the pumps. Three converter topologies were chosen for further evaluation. First, a conventional resonant Royer-based converter that has previously been used by APR Technologies which was altered by the inclusion of a feedback loop. Second, a high-frequency resonant Royer-based converter with a planar air-core transformer. Third, a transformerless converter with a switched boost converter IC. All circuits included a Cockroft-Walton voltage multiplier bridge. The two resonant Royer-based converters fulfilled all requirements except the one on efficiency, while the transformerless converter fulfilled all requirements except the one on cost, set by APR. The more expensive transformerless converter had a significantly higher efficiency and a wider range of acceptable input voltages. Furthermore three general conclusions were drawn. The first was that planar air-core transformers are not beneficial compared to conventional transformers in these type of applications. The second was that a discrete voltage regulator controlled by feedback from the output is more effective than using a voltage regulator without feedback, as it also eliminates temperature and load variations. The third conclusion was that to protect the circuits from overcurrent, a large series resistor is needed, which causes significantly lowered efficiency.
