Design and Shape Optimization of Unmanned, Semi-Rigid Airship for Rapid Descent Using Hybrid Genetic Algorithm

Singh, Vinay 10 January 2019 (has links)
Airships provide an eco-friendly and cost-effective means to suit sustained airborne operations. Smaller autonomous airships are highly susceptible to adverse atmospheric conditions owing to their under-actuated, underpowered and bulky size relative to other types of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). To mitigate these limitations, careful considerations of the size and shape must be made at the design stage. This research presents a methodology for obtaining an optimized shape of a semi-rigid airship. Rapid descent of the LTA ship is achieved by means of a moving gondola attached to a rigid keel mounted under the helium envelope from the bow to the mid-section of the hull. The study entails the application of a robust hybrid genetic algorithm (HGA) for the multi-disciplinary design and optimization of an airship capable of rapid descent, with lower drag and optimum surface area. A comprehensive sensitivity analysis was also performed on the basis of algorithmic parameters and atmospheric conditions. With the help of HGA, a semi-rigid airship capable of carrying a payload of 0.25 kg to 1.0 kg and capable of pitching at right angles is conceptually designed. The algorithm is also tested on commercially available vehicles to validate the results. In multi-objective optimization problems (MOOPs), the significance of different objectives is dependent on the user.

Stratigraphies : forms of excavation in contemporary British and Irish poetry

Downing, Niamh Catherine January 2013 (has links)
This thesis intervenes in current critical debates about space, place and landscape in late-twentieth and twenty-first century British and Irish poetry, by examining models of excavation in selected work by Geoffrey Hill, Ciaran Carson, Geraldine Monk and Alice Oswald. It argues that the influence of the spatial turn on literary criticism over the last thirty years has led to the deployment of a limited set of spatial tropes as analytical tools for interpreting the spaces and places of poetry. By deploying excavation as a critical method it seeks to challenge existing approaches that tend to privilege ideas of space over time, and socio-spatial practices over literary traditions of writing place. In doing so it develops a new model for reading contemporary poetries of place that asserts the importance of locating spatial criticism within temporal and literary-historical frameworks. The four poets examined in the thesis exhibit a common concern with unearthing the strata of language as well as material space. Starting from a premise that excavation always works over the ground of language as well as landscape it investigates the literary traditions of landscape writing in which each of these poets might be said to be embedded. After surveying the critical field the thesis sets out four principles of excavation that it argues are transformed and renewed by each of these poets: the relationship between past and present; recovery and interpretation of finds; processes of unearthing; exhumation of the dead. The subsequent chapters contend that these conventions are put into question by Geoffrey Hill’s sedimentary poetics, Ciaran Carson’s parodic stratigraphy, Geraldine Monk’s collaborations with the dead, and Alice Oswald’s geomorphology of a self-excavating earth. The critical method that underpins the discussion in each of the chapters is also excavatory in that it unearths both the historical and literary strata of specific sites (the Midlands, Belfast, East Lancashire, Dartmoor and the Severn estuary) and resonances in the work of earlier poetic excavators (Paul Celan, Edward Thomas, Gerard Manley Hopkins, William Wordsworth, Dante Alighieri and Homer). Through careful exegesis of these poets and their precursors this thesis demonstrates that by transforming existing forms of excavation, contemporary poetry is able to renew its deep dialogue with place and literary history.

More in National Parks, Protected Areas category always linked to major visitation. This project was carried out monitoring of visitation, one of the most beautiful scenery in the state of Santa Catarina -Brazil, Church Hill, which overlooks the Holed Stone, geological monument, inserted in the São Joaquim National Park, established by Decree 50.922 of July, 06/1961. Natural Protected Area (NPA) in the year 2013 was the fourth most visited country. Leveraging the installation of a physical ordinance on the access road to the Church Hill, observed traffic flow of visitors on the highway and after analysis of more than five thousand hours of effective monitoring, we found your profile, highlighting: number of visitors, time of visit, place of origin and used vehicle. In addition to assessing the physical aspects of the path and the parking spot, we estimated the tourism carrying capacity and the attractive alternatives to qualify this visitation. Among the actions effected include: signaling, identification of the visitor and the audioguide. All activities were followed, most with direct observation and through other interviews, and realized the reduction of congestion in the area, visitor awareness as to the location that is knowing and increased visitation time. Finding solutions to the demands of the population, the scientific community and the tourist market, combining them with the lowest possible impact on local visitation and surroundings, is a challenge for environmental management of any Protected Natural Area / Atualmente as Áreas Protegidas Naturais (APN) são roteiros turísticos muito procurados no Brasil e no mundo inteiro, porém conciliar a preservação da natureza e da proteção do patrimônio histórico-cultural para a gestão das mesmas, não é uma tarefa fácil.

Efeito da deformaÃÃo prÃvia na seleÃÃo de variantes na transformaÃÃo martensÃtica no aÃo maraging 350 / Effect of prior deformation in the variants selection in the martensitic transformation in maraging steel 350

Neuman Fontenele Viana 09 December 2014 (has links)
In this work a study of the influence of variant selection on the crystallography after martensitic transformation in Maraging was studied. The study covered both the transformation under elastic deformation and also during plastic deformation. In Maraging steel, austenite becomes martensite at a temperature around 200oC regardless of the cooling speed. To simulate the transformation during elastic deformation, a tensile test was performed in a furnace attached to a universal testing machine with an applied stress below the yield strength of the material. The specimen was heated to 850o C, the furnace was opened and the sample cooled in air under a constant stress. To study the influence of plastic deformation before transformation, samples were plastically deformed in a temperature above Ms (martensite start temperature), the external force acting on the sample was removed and the material was allowed to transform into martensite by cooling in air. Pole figures were measured by EBSD (Electron Back-Scatter Diffraction) in both conditions and compared with calculated pole figures assuming Patel-Cohen model and Taylor-Bishop-Hill model. The orientation of the parent austenite was obtained either by reversing the austenite by heating at 650  C and by using the mathematically reconstructed austenite grains. Results showed that Patel-Cohen model were more suitable to elastic deformation while Taylor-Bishop-Hill model was more appropriated to plastic deformation.

Menezes, Luiz Carlos de 16 April 2004 (has links)
This study presents the results of research that consisted of the verification of potentialities and perspectives on the practice of ecotourism activities at Itabaiana Hill, and considers the institutional, legal, economical, ecological, and cultural dimensions of its sustainability. Itabaiana Hill is a Conservation Unit in the phase of implementation as an ecological station since 1978. As such, its use is restricted to preservation, scientific research and environmental education. In the face of the occurrence of conflicts and the dissatisfaction of the nearby communities, due to the prohibition of the Hill s use, we understand ecotourism as a conciliatory activity between the local communities development and nature preservation. Environmental preservation and tourism activity are compatible and they can allow the maintenance of culture and income generation of the populations near the Conservation Units. In ecotourism, nature is the attracting consumable and its practice is based on the ethics of sustainability that understands nature as a natural and cultural asset. The variables adopted were based on the studies of Beni (2002) and Bóullon (2002), supported by the dimensions of sustainability. As research instruments, bibliographical and documental sources, interviews, visits to Itabaiana Hill with geographical reference to tourist points, and photographic records were used. The natural complex that forms Itabaiana Hill, 669m high, is easily noticed against the low landscape around it and was taken as a macro-scenery, subdivided into four potential units for ecotourism: the summit, the West vertex, the East vertex, and the valleys. Its morphology presents an almost vertical and rocky vertex to the West and another one with a softer declination to the East. This vertex is covered by rupestrian fields, cerrados (woodland/savanna regions in South America), restinga (coastal vegetation), and mata atlântica (Atlantic forest), through which four springs with riverbeds with waterfalls, and small basins of accumulation that form natural swimming pools flow, covered by gallery forest, making up a number of ecosystems of great value, that justify restrictions to the use of the area. Another relevant aspect that was identified consists of the incorporation of various elements of the Hill into the culture of Sergipe through stories and legends, which turns it into a special and potential place for ecotourism. As for the perspectives related to the opening of Itabaiana Hill to the use of ecotourism, the interviews conducted with landowners in the area, tourism agencies, tour guides, municipal and state organs, and IBAMA Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources supported our understanding that the use of ecotourism presents itself as a possible alternative, once there is a change made in the typology of the Conservation Unit, from an Ecological Station to another compatible type. Although there is already a study being developed by IBAMA, supported by Law # 9.985/2000 that instituted the National System of Conversation Units (SNUC), and that encourages ecotourism in Conservation Units and their surrounding areas as an alternative for development, a retrospective analysis of the process demonstrates a lack of involvement and commitment, at various levels, by the ones socially and institutionally involved with the preservation of the natural and cultural assets that constitute Itabaiana Hill.

Large-scale drivers of fish biodiversity differ across an environmentally variable Great Plains watershed

Lehrter, Richard J., II January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Biology / Martha E. Mather / Understanding the empirical relationships between biotic diversity and components of the environment is crucial for effective research and management, particularly in highly disturbed watersheds. The Smoky Hill River is a semi-arid prairie stream with a historic native fish community that is adapted to the extreme and highly variable climatic and hydrological conditions characteristic of the Great Plains streams. Following a literature review on environmental variables, diversity responses, and analysis methods, I evaluated the importance of land use, flow, discontinuities (dams, confluences), and stream type (mainstem-tributary) variables in explaining fish richness using AICc model selection with multiple linear, Poisson and negative-binomial regressions. I then compared these results from 48 sites across three watershed regions to those from a long-term monitoring dataset (ST) using the same candidate variables. Finally, I examined phylogenetic patterns of the fish community using ordination analyses. Patterns and drivers of biodiversity differed with watershed region, land use, stream type, and flow. Fish species richness in the Smoky Hill watershed was negatively correlated with percent developed land in the Lower region of the watershed, but positively correlated with percent herbaceous grassland, the reference prairie condition, in the Upper region of the watershed. Summer mean flow was consistently and positively related to species richness in the Middle and Upper regions of the watershed where flow was limited. In the Lower region of the watershed, species richness was higher in the more flow-moderate tributaries relative to high-flow mainstem sites. In the Middle and Upper flow-limited regions, species richness was lower in the low-flow tributaries than main stem sites. Families of fish species were also related to region and stream type (mainstem vs. tributary). A comparison of two databases showed how different goals, questions, and methods result in different insights, emphasizing the need for establishing a priori goals before sampling.
