Concrete block single-story detached homes are popular residences in Florida, but construction materials and methods must undergo changes to combat rising prices and material shortages. Those systems with the greatest pressure of price or material shortage will change first. When current costs and methods are examine, it is found that two systems, roof and exterior walls, have the greatest need for changes in the immediate future; and one system, thermal insulation, needs an empirical study. The roof is of materials which are in short supply and rapidly increasing in cost. The study concludes that, with present cost trends, metal frame members for the roof or a reinforced concrete slab roof are feasible alternatives. The exterior walls have excessive labor costs, and the feasible alternative may be cast-on-site masonry tilt-up panel walls. Power prices, electrical and fuel, create a need to establish new guidelines for the extent of home thermal insulation. The heat gains and losses are examined to direct future studies of the home's thermal insulation problems. The concrete block home will continue to be viable if the necessary innovations are implemented to reduce cost rate of increase and to reduce operating and maintenance costs.

The so-called culture wars of recent years have created an ethos of caution in our cultural institutions. Museums often avoid exhibits and programming that might prove controversial for fear of public backlash. This paper examines how public historians and archivists might work together to devise strategies for positive public engagement in controversial history projects. Archives have the power to ensure the public's trust in their cultural institutions, while primary source material can be utilized to promote constructive conversation among audiences. Public conflict will be directed into more productive channels if museums create a safe space for dialogue. / History

This project incorporates the relationship of fashion and architecture. In major fashion houses currently, architects are becoming an essential element. Their involvement in projects as creative directors is becoming highly prized in the industry. They are increasingly trusted to take the lead and direct the artistic components. In this project thesis I weave fashion into architecture by researching the design of the fashion house, Missoni and drawing from my experience in both fields / Master of Architecture / As I began the academic year leading to my thesis, I started my research by several explorative drawings - fragments of future design - weaving my building. Architecture and fashion play a core role in my life. Architecture is a strong influence as a native Athenian in the hellenic environment. Fashion has been my work field. I considered how all these elements can compose the ideal space for a fashion house. Architecture and fashion are getting closely related in the development of our era. Both pursue beauty, symmetry, comfort, success and popularity from humans. The clothes can be the surface and the material of our buildings. Missoni's colorful threads (the structure) are perfectly woven to create knitwear that protects and covers the human skin. Similarly, this space was woven into its site and guided by my research. This book follows an accurate chronological order of my thought and design process till the very end.

The thesis is an attempt to define and design a house by utilizing modernized construction technologies. From a single cell, a man grows up into a complex creature with an independent life. A livable space for a person starts from the mother's womb, then moves on to a crib, a full-size bed, a room, and finally a house. We can say, therefore, "a living room" originates from an independent life and is created for a person. Man cannot and does not live alone. Human interactions help develop the spatial relationship among rooms in a house, and among houses in a community. Social relations, such as those found among family, friends and neighbors, define the mental and physical dimensions as they are manifested in the demarcations of rooms, halls and houses. Sadly, modernization seems to have destroyed the human basis for spatial relations, as we no longer can find these attributes in contemporary designs where elevators and stairs have replaced alleys and backyards where neighborhood children once played and housewives enjoyed socializing. Industrialized processes have allowed us to build more space more quickly, but, unfortunately, these processes have also simultaneously equalized qualities in housing design today. Because of the potential complexity of these questions, I am compelled to focus on a room or a house as the scope of the study. The aim of the thesis is therefore the study of the development of a socially and technically responsive house in the face of growth and change in an industrialized world. In Part One, I shall start with an analysis of historical precedents and the development of a working concept for the design. Part Two ponders how to use minimum materials and sizes to create maximum spaces and capacity. The final section includes the demonstration of the design process involved in the creation of a future-oriented house. / Master of Architecture

An architectural idea has been drawn out in a row house on an imaginary site. Architectural drawings in plan, section and elevation, as well as diagrams, sketches and graphite renderings show a process of working that presupposes existential questions as necessary for making architecture. / Master of Architecture

Life is a transition through stages, framed by birth and death. We transition through life in a nonlinear fashion, moving sometimes closer to, and sometimes farther from, rest. Daily, we rise for living and fall to rest. Daily, we prepare for activity and prepare for sleep. Daily we age and endure, but our burdens may lighten with the coming of Spring or a new member to the family. In reverence to the stages of life, I have designed a house living for death - a house that provides a meaningful setting for the stages of life and our daily transitions. The house provides a dwelling for a cemetery caretaker, whose very vocation is a daily encounter with death. The house, living for death, is composed of aspects that call the dweller to death and to life. Death is reflected in a stone foundation and walls for the private quarters of the home, for rest and daily preparations. These ground the dweller in ultimate rest. Life is reflected in rooms of timber that create a place for nourishment, entertaining, and leisure during the day. The centerpiece of the house is a stone hearth that adjoins the stages of the house - stone and timber, death and life. Just as the stages of life are nonlinear, the stone and timber construction of the house meet and acknowledge each other and their respective roles. For example, the sleeping quarters have a stone foundation but east-facing walls of wood remind the sleeper that activity calls and that rest in the house is not permanent. A key feature of the home is its moment of transition to the west, where the dweller is prepared to encounter and acknowledge final rest in the attached cemetery. Two rotating doors create a space for the caretaker to access the cemetery through a moment of transition. In this moment, the caretaker accesses her tools and reorients her mind. Transitioning to the outdoors, the caretaker must ascend to the cemetery and pauses on landing when eye-height with her charges, the headstones. Upon return from the cemetery, the moment of transition is a moment to remove dirt, clean, and again reorient to the living. / Master of Architecture

'Cosmo House' is a new idea of living. The people are leaving their home for different life purpose and setting up a temporary home in a new place in a new city. The world has already many cosmopolitan cities. What if there is a new housing type named 'Cosmo House'. It is not a permanent house to live, not so temporary living as like hotel and dorms. It is something in between, it must have some certain design considerations which serve the purpose of those new nomads. 'Cosmo House' is an experience of living where people come to live for few years and can engage with other people, events and experiences and such way they feel it is their new home away from home. The site is in Newark downtown in New Jersey which is a perfect location for international students who study in nearby universities and for international professionals who commute to work in Manhattan and nearby areas. The thesis seeks for an experiential living system in 50000 square feet of a lot where a complex housing mass generates from a concept. It has many grounds, roofs, and neighborhood blocks within the 28-story building. 'Cosmo House' has many small, medium and large social spaces for its many users' group to carefully generate engagements among them and experiences of home. It also connects the tenants to the neighboring people with shared experiences and thus makes the building an integral part of the city too. The experiences of 'Cosmo House' can be universal and adjustable depending on the context where it is built. A new nomad will search for a 'Cosmo House' when he moves from Newark to another city in this world and will always live at home. The concept of home is not restricted to a place where he thinks he belongs but he can carry his home from one place to another place and will always feel at home. / Master of Architecture / Imagine, one is moving to a new country leaving his home behind. Once lands in a new country, he has to adapt himself in a new living condition. Very soon he gets homesick. What if, he could just live in a similar home as like he used to live in his country. Practically, it is not possible to live in the exact same house in a completely different contextual condition. One can not live a house like Saudi Arabia in cold weather like New York City. But maybe he can expect a house which can make himself feel home. Human should not adjust himself, rather home should adapt to the need for Human. A cosmo-house is the concept of new housing typology which accommodates the needs of this neo-nomad in a new city. Their scale can be changed depending on the contexts of different cosmo-cities. But the idea is same the cosmo-house is for the cosmo-people where certain programs of a building are present. It is diversified living by diversified demographic who start to live here for a temporary period but can engage in many interactions and experiences. When there are interactions, experiences, memories are created there. The new memory should help the neo-nomad people to feel the cosmo-house as their home away from home. Who once lives in a cosmo-house carries the concept of home. If he moves to a new cosmo-house to a new city, he actually carries his home with him. He will be always in his home any part of the world in a cosmo-house.

It is the proposal of this thesis, that house can be the embodiment and manifestation of three independently assertive elements; site, function, and of a hierarchy of ideas, pertaining to the design of home. / Master of Architecture
