Digital Watermarking Based Image and Video Quality Evaluation

Image and video quality evaluation is very important. In applications involving signal transmission, the Reduced- or No-Reference quality metrics are generally more practical than the Full-Reference metrics. Digital watermarking based quality evaluation emerges as a potential Reduced- or No-Reference quality metric, which estimates signal quality by assessing the degradation of the embedded watermark. Since the watermark contains a small amount of information compared to the cover signal, performing accurate signal quality evaluation is a challenging task. Meanwhile, the watermarking process causes signal quality loss. To address these problems, in this thesis, a framework for image and video quality evaluation is proposed based on semi-fragile and adaptive watermarking. In this framework, adaptive watermark embedding strength is assigned by examining the signal quality degradation characteristics. The "Ideal Mapping Curve" is experimentally generated to relate watermark degradation to signal degradation so that the watermark degradation can be used to estimate the quality of distorted signals. With the proposed framework, a quantization based scheme is first implemented in DWT domain. In this scheme, the adaptive watermark embedding strengths are optimized by iteratively testing the image degradation characteristics under JPEG compression. This iterative process provides high accuracy for quality evaluation. However, it results in relatively high computational complexity. As an improvement, a tree structure based scheme is proposed to assign adaptive watermark embedding strengths by pre-estimating the signal degradation characteristics, which greatly improves the computational efficiency. The SPIHT tree structure and HVS masking are used to guide the watermark embedding, which greatly reduces the signal quality loss caused by watermark embedding. Experimental results show that the tree structure based scheme can evaluate image and video quality with high accuracy in terms of PSNR, wPSNR, JND, SSIM and VIF under JPEG compression, JPEG2000 compression, Gaussian low-pass filtering, Gaussian noise distortion, H.264 compression and packet loss related distortion.

Détection de mouvement par modèle biologique de fusion de donnée inspiré de la rétine humaine

Ce mémoire s'intéresse à la détection de mouvement dans une séquence d'images acquises à l'aide d'une caméra fixe. Dans ce problème, la difficulté vient du fait que les mouvements récurrents ou non significatifs de la scène tels que les oscillations d'une branche, l'ombre d'un objet ou les remous d'une surface d'eau doivent être ignorés et classés comme appartenant aux régions statiques de la scène. La plupart des méthodes de détection de mouvement utilisées à ce jour reposent en fait sur le principe bas-niveau de la modélisation puis la soustraction de l'arrière-plan. Ces méthodes sont simples et rapides mais aussi limitées dans les cas où l'arrière-plan est complexe ou bruité (neige, pluie, ombres, etc.). Cette recherche consiste à proposer une technique d'amélioration de ces algorithmes dont l'idée principale est d'exploiter et mimer deux caractéristiques essentielles du système de vision humain. Pour assurer une vision nette de l’objet (qu’il soit fixe ou mobile) puis l'analyser et l'identifier, l'œil ne parcourt pas la scène de façon continue, mais opère par une série de ``balayages'' ou de saccades autour (des points caractéristiques) de l'objet en question. Pour chaque fixation pendant laquelle l'œil reste relativement immobile, l'image est projetée au niveau de la rétine puis interprétée en coordonnées log polaires dont le centre est l'endroit fixé par l'oeil. Les traitements bas-niveau de détection de mouvement doivent donc s'opérer sur cette image transformée qui est centrée pour un point (de vue) particulier de la scène. L'étape suivante (intégration trans-saccadique du Système Visuel Humain (SVH)) consiste ensuite à combiner ces détections de mouvement obtenues pour les différents centres de cette transformée pour fusionner les différentes interprétations visuelles obtenues selon ses différents points de vue. / This master thesis revolves around motion detection in sequences recorded from a fixed camera. This situation is challenging since we must ignore insignificant recurring motions such as oscillating branches, shadows, or waves on the surface of the water. Those must be classified as belonging to the background and static. Most motion detection techniques used nowadays are based on the simple and low level principle of background modeling and subtraction. These techniques are simple and fast but they reach their limit when they have to deal with complex or noisy images (from snowy, rainy, sunny weather, etc.). This research consist of proposing a technique aiming to improve those algorithms by mimicking two essential characteristics of the Human Visual System (HVS). To obtain a clear vision of an object (static or mobile) and then to analyse and identify it, our eye doesn't analyse the scene continuously but operates through several sweeping motions, or saccades, across the object. During each moment when the eye stays fixed, the image is projected on the retina and then interpreted as described by log-polar coordinates, where the center is the point fixed by the eye. Low level detection treatment should then operate on this transformed image which is centered on a particular point of view of the scene. The second step (the trans-saccadic integration of the HVS) is to combine all those data gathered from different points of view.

Texture analysis in the Logarithmic Image Processing (LIP) framework

This thesis looks at the evaluation of textures in two different perspectives using logarithmic image processing (LIP) framework. The first case after introducing the concept of textures and giving some classical approaches of textures evaluation, it gives an original approach of textures evaluation called covariogram which is derived from similarity metrics like distances or correlations etc. The classical covariogram which is derived from the classical similarity metrics and LIP covariogram are then applied over several images and the efficiency of the LIP one is clearly shown for darkened images. The last two chapters offer a new approach by considering the gray levels of an image as the phases of a medium. Each phase simulates like a percolation of a liquid in a medium defining the percolation trajectories. The propagation from one pixel to another is taken as easy or difficult determined by the difference of the gray level intensities. Finally different parameters like fractality from fractal dimensions, mean histogram etc associated to these trajectories are derived, based on which the primary experiment for the classification of random texture is carried out determining the relevance of this idea. Obviously, our study is only first approach and requires additional workout to obtain a reliable method of classification

En fait, le concept de texture n’est pas facile à définir, mais il est clair qu’il est fortement lié au Système Visuel Humain. Sachant que le Modèle LIP est compatible avec la vision humaine, il nous a semblé intéressant de créer des outils logarithmiques dédiés à l’évaluation de la texture. Nous nous sommes concentrés sur la notion de covariogramme, qui peut être pilotée par diverses métriques logarithmiques. Ces métriques jouent le rôle d’outils de “corrélation”, avec l’avantage de prendre en compte la vision humaine. De plus, les outils LIP sont peu dépendants des conditions d’éclairement et fournissent donc des résultats robustes si celles-ci varient. Les deux derniers Chapitres proposent une nouvelle approche consistant à considérer les niveaux de gris d’une image comme les phases d’un milieu. Chaque phase permet de simuler la percolation d’un liquide dans le milieu, définissant ainsi des trajectoires de percolation. Chaque propagation d’un pixel à un autre est considérée comme facile ou non, en fonction des niveaux de gris traversés. Une « fonction de coût » est créée, qui modifie le « temps » de propagation d’un point à l’autre. In theoretical part Diploma thesis deals with the model of human vision HVS (Human Visual System), which can be used for image quality assessment in TV technique area. It has been described calculations of selected JND (Just Noticeable Difference) metrics, used in evaluation of HVS. In practical part of the thesis it has been suggested and realized simulation model in Matlab, which may be used for evaluation of three JND metrics from color and grayscale images and evaluation in spatial a frequency domain. Results of JND models have been compared to another objective image quality evaluation metrics (MSE, NMSE, SNR and PSNR). For interpretation of dependencies it has been used images with different defined content.

Atualmente, existe uma tendência entre os projetistas brasileiros de valorizar a etapa de tratamento preliminar em projetos de novas estações de tratamento de esgoto (ETE). Neste ensejo foi concebido, construído e estudado um protótipo, em escala plena, de uma unidade composta de separador hidrodinâmico por vórtice (SHV) – empregado como desarenador – e grade fina cilíndrica de fluxo tangencial. Estudos acerca da hidrodinâmica da unidade, fundamentados em ensaios de estímulo-resposta com traçador (sal de cozinha) e simulações computacionais do padrão de escoamento em software de dinâmica dos fluidos computacional, demonstrou que ao se operar a unidade com taxas de aplicação superficial (TAS) de 764 'M POT.3'/'M POT.2'd; 1.146 'M POT.3'/'M POT.2'd e 1.528 'M POT.3'/'M POT.2'd o regime de macro-mistura do padrão de escoamento que se desenvolve no SHV aproximou-se do plug-flow, porém com certo grau de mistura que diminuiu com o aumento da TAS. Nesta pesquisa, foram desenvolvidos dois métodos um para determinação da concentração de areia no esgoto sanitário e outro para determinação da distribuição granulométrica dos grãos dessa areia. Ambos foram empregados na avaliação de desempenho da unidade de tratamento preliminar desenvolvida, que foi realizada na estação elevatória de ETE Jardim das Flores do município de Rio Claro, SP. Durante esta fase da pesquisa, o SHV demonstrou enorme potencialidade na remoção de areia para as TAS de 764 'M POT.3'/'M POT.2'd; 1.146 'M POT.3'/'M POT.2'd e 1.528 'M POT.3'/'M POT.2'd, porquanto, além de não remover significativamente matéria orgânica particulada (medida em termos de concentração de sólidos suspensos voláteis) presentes no esgoto sanitário, a unidade atingiu eficiências de remoção de grãos de areia de tamanho maior ou igual a 200 'mü'm entre 85% e 95%. Entretanto, a grade fina cilíndrica de fluxo tangencial (auto-limpante) revelou-se inviável. / Currently, there is a trend among the brazilian designers of valorizing the preliminary treatment in recently designed wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). In this context, a full scale prototype of a unit made up of a hydrodynamic vortex separator (HVS) – applied as a degritter – and a tangential flux fine screening was designed, built and evaluated. Research about the hydrodynamic of the prototype, based on stimulus-response essays with a salt tracer (sodium chloride) and computational simulations of the flow pattern using the computational fluid dynamic (CFD) software, showed that the macro mixture regime of the flow was similar to a plug-flow when the unit was operated with superficial loading rates (SLR) of 746 'M POT.3'/'M POT.2'd; 1.146 'M POT.3'/'M POT.2'd and 1.528 'M POT.3'/'M POT.2'd, however, the flow presented a certain mixture degree that reduced with the SLR increase. In this research, two methods were developed: one for the determination of grit concentration in sewage and another one for the assessment of grit grading. Both methods were used on the evaluation of the HVS prototype efficiency, which was carried out at Jardim das Flores WWT, in the city of Rio Claro, SP.
