Numerical modelling and experimental measurement of the temperature distribution in a rolling tire

Maritz, Johannes Christoffel 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2015. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Rubber is the main component of the pneumatic tire. When rubber is put under cyclic loading, like when a tire is rolled, heat is generated and stored in the rubber, due to hysteresis. Heat stored in the tire is increased by factors like under-inflation, overloading, speeding and defects in the tire. The heat causes high temperatures in the tire due to the poor thermal conductivity of rubber. When the temperature in the rubber increases to 185 °C, pyrolysis and thermo-oxidation starts and can cause the tire to eventually explode. A numerical model of a rolling passenger vehicle tire was developed to calculate the temperature distribution inside the tire and analyse the effect of different operating conditions on the temperature. Operating conditions include loading, inflation pressure, rolling velocity and ambient temperature. The tire was modelled by a single rubber type, using the Mooney-Rivlin material model. The bead wire was modelled using an isotropic material model, while the body and steel cord plies were modelled as rebars. The cavity, used to inflate the tire, included the pressure increase due to the volume change, when the tire is loaded. The numerical model was validated using experimental data from tests done on an actual tire. These tests included deformation and contact stress analysis, as well as surface temperature measurements. Numerical results showed an increase in temperature when the load, rolling velocity and the ambient temperature were increased, as well as when the inflation pressure was decreased. The trends of the numerical data matched the trends of the experimental data. However, the values of the numerical model were not consistent with the experimental data due to material properties from literature being used to model the tire.

The development and application of the load-stroke hysteresis technique for evaluating fatigue damage development in composite materials

Baxter, Thomas 05 September 2009 (has links)
A new experimental method was developed to measure the hysteresis loss during a fatigue test from the load and stroke signals of a standard servo-hydraulic materials testing system. The method was used to characterize changes in properties and performance induced by long-term cyclic loading. Advantages of the load-stroke hysteresis loop include: (1) the fact that contact with the specimen is not required, (2) the fatigue test is not interrupted for data collection, (3) the measured quantity (the hysteresis loop area) is directly related to the (damage) events that alter material properties and life, and (4) a quantitative measure of damage extent and development is obtained. / Master of Science

Output Capacitance Loss Measurement and Validation for Low-Voltage Silicon and GaN Devices in DC-DC Converter Applications

Soni, Abhinav 14 July 2023 (has links)
With the rise of soft-switched converter topologies which enable high-frequency power conversion, there has been a premise that these converter topologies can help achieve loss-less switching in a power device. However, this theory is not completely true as there even with soft-switching there is some degree of loss associated in the form of output capacitance-related hysteresis loss, channel turn-off loss, and loss during the dead-time period in these converter topologies. The soft-switching converters utilize the existence of the device's output capacitance (COSS), which is charged and discharged consecutively at each switching cycle, and a hysteresis loss exists due to the difference in charging and discharging output capacitance. In order fully utilize the potential of these novel soft-switching topologies, we need to investigate further into the origins of these losses or loss mechanisms, methods to measure or compute these losses, and then devise ways to optimize the loss for a given application. This work focuses on exploring methods to quantify this loss for different operating conditions like device current, switching frequency, dV/dT, etc. In this aspect, some methods have been studied and used to quantify this hysteresis loss for a variety of power devices like SI and GaN. It is reported that only channel turn-off losses exist in devices with ZVS transition, however, we found that the charging and discharging of COSS is not loss-free and thus it is important that we account for this loss in the design process. Finally, the loss data obtained from these tests are compared with each other for five different power devices to validate their applicability, and later these test results are used to get an optimized device selection criterion for the best possible efficiency and minimal losses for a ZVS application. / Master of Science / To eliminate the switch-related losses, soft-switching or zero-voltage switching (ZVS) was introduced which provides a soft transition of voltage and current instead of a sharp transition like in hard-switched converters. Moreover, the output capacitance of the devices is charged/discharged to achieve soft switching, which also possesses a loss (hysteresis loss) due to repeated charging and discharging of output capacitance. Soft-switching converter topologies have gained quite a momentum for almost a decade, and it keeps on increasing in the distant future, to extract the maximum benefits from these topologies is to operate at high switching frequencies to minimize the size and volume of the converter. However, the hysteresis loss can severely impact the converter efficiency on even a few 100 kHz and MHz levels. This work focuses on exploring methods to measure hysteresis loss in output capacitance which has a major share in the overall switching loss. In this regard, some methods have been investigated that deal with the measurement of the output capacitance-related hysteresis loss and are implemented to get the hysteresis loss data for different power devices. Two test methods (calorimetric and non-linear resonance) are implemented on five different power devices (3 SI and 2 GaN) to get the energy loss in the output capacitance; these test results are used to explain the switching loss in an isolated boost resonance DC-DC converter, and a concept of ZVS figure of merit is used to obtain the optimized device. Moreover, a design example of a soft-switched converter is presented to highlight the impact of COSS hysteresis loss in the overall switching loss of primary side devices.

Magnetic losses in maganese zinc ferrites: the role of sinterization and microstructural parameters.

Lázaro Colán, Victoria Amelia 21 May 2010 (has links)
The use of manganese zinc ferrite in power sources of battery chargers is growing, due to its low magnetic power losses at inductions around 0.2 T. These ferrites belong to the soft magnetic materials group, they are polycrystalline ferromagnetic oxides with face centered cubic structure. Powders of this material were compacted in uniaxial press and in automatic press of production, by ring and toroidal form, respectively. Two firing cycles, varying the atmosphere oxygen content between 5 and 15%, were applied to evaluate its effect on microstructure, density, magnetic losses in high induction and permeability. Samples sintered in warmer positions inside the furnace resulted in higher density and larger grain size, as expected, but higher losses at 25 °C were achieved. Increasing the atmosphere oxygen content from 5 to 15% did not alter density significantly, but resulted in a slight increase in grain size. On the other hand, the correlation between oxygen content and losses was complex. There are lower losses, at 60 °C. Similar behavior was observed with hysteresis loss, which is compatible with the change in magnetocrystalline magnetic anisotropy (K1). Measurements were performed from 25 to 100 °C, at 0.2 T, aiming at the evaluation of the effect of temperature on the two parcels of hysteresis loss. Samples sintered at 1290 °C with low atmosphere oxygen content showing a minimum on the losses versus temperature curve. The available techniques to analyze Fe2+ content were not capable of establishing, unequivocally, the expected relation between this variable and the oxygen content of the sintering atmosphere.

Crystal structure, martensitic transformation crystallography, mechanical and magnetocaloric performance of Ni(Co)MnIn multifunctional alloys / Structure cristalline, cristallographie de transformation martensitique, performances mécaniques et magnétocaloriques de l'alliage multifonctionnel Ni(Co)MnIn

Yan, Haile 29 July 2016 (has links)
Chaque colonie a quatre variantes d'orientations distinctes. [...] / Ni-Mn-In based alloys have attracted considerable attention due to their multifunctional properties since its discovery in 2004, such as metamagnetic shape memory effect (MMSME), magnetocaloric effect (MCE) and magnetoresistance (MR) effect. However, some fundenmental knowledge on these alloys is still missing until now, such as crystal structure of martensite, crystallographic features of microstructure and magnetostructural transition. In this dissertation, the crystallographic features, mechanical behaviors and magnetic properties of Ni-Mn-In based alloys were studied theoretically and experimentally. First, the crystal structures of Ni-Mn-In alloys were accurately determined by Rietveld method in the frame of superspace theory (Chapter 3). Then, the microstructure of martensite (Chapter 4), such as variant organization and interface structure, and the crystallographic features of martensitic transformation, such as orientation relationship (OR), transformation strain path and geometrical compatibility between austenite and martensite, were systematically studied (Chapter 5). Finally, with this fundamental knowledge on Ni-Mn-In alloys, the behaviors and mechanisms of martensite variant rearrangement/ selection under two kinds of mechanical loading strategies, i.e. loading at martensite state and loading across the structural transition, and the effects of annealing on MCE and its related hysteresis loss were explored (Chapter 6). The main results are as follows. The modulated martensite has an incommensurate 6M crystal structure with superspace group I2/m(α0γ)00 that can be approximated by a three-fold superstructure model in the three-dimensional space. The microstructure of martensite is in plate shape and self-organized in colonies. Each colony has four distinct orientation variants. The maximum of 6 distinct colonies and 24 variants can be generated within one austenite grain. Although as many as 14 kinds of twin relations are suggested in the frame of crystallographic theories of martensitic transformation, only three types of twin relations are generally detected, i.e. type-I, type-II and compound twin. Variant interfaces are defined by their corresponding twinning plane K1 at mesoscopic scale. However, at atomic scale, the type-I twin has a coherent interface, whereas type-II and compound twins have “stepped” interfaces. Both the K-S and Pitsch ORs are appropriate to describe the lattice correspondence between austenite and martensite in Ni-Mn-In alloys. However, the strain path related to the Pitsch relation is evidenced to be the effective for the structural distortion. With the determined transformation path, the underlying mechanism of variant organization is revealed. Across the martensitic transformation, despite the existence of a relative wide stressed layer (around 20 nm), the habit plane is bordered by single martensite variant with austenite rather than the generally observed “sandwich-like” structure, implying a relative good geometrical compatibility between the corresponding phases. For compressive loading at martensite, variant arrangement is realized by the detwinning process. It is evidenced that a single variant state in some colonies can be obtained when the loading orientation is located in the common positive Schmid factor (SF) zone of the three detwinning systems. For loading across the structural transition, the prestrain is obtained by variant selection in which the number of colonies is significantly reduced and the variant organization within colony is greatly changed. The SF for transformation strain path is introduced to evaluate the possible selection of variants. Heat treatment can significantly enhance the magnetic entropy change ΔSM but simultaneously increase the magnetic hysteresis loss. For ΔSM, the chemical ordered degree should play a prominent role [...]
