Por meio de comparação dos núcleos urbanos iniciais, este trabalho pretende reconhecer Lisboa como modelo na criação de novas cidades durante do século XVI, além de identificar padrões na estruturação e consolidação dos centros urbanos nas Províncias Ultramarinas. Dentre os contextos políticos, econômicos e religiosos que impulsionaram a expansão marítima portuguesa, a necessidade de consolidação e de unificação do Reino levou os reis de Portugal a adotar políticas que resultaram na criação de um vasto e próspero Império que se espalhou por todo o globo. Teriam sido os continentes, os oceanos e as longas distâncias barreiras à unidade cultural lusófona? Supondo que Lisboa tivesse de fato sido o modelo na implantação dos primeiros núcleos urbanos, quais eram as características comuns das novas cidades fundadas? Embora as cidades ultramarinas estivessem geograficamente afastadas umas das outras e de Lisboa, através da ação dos navegadores se consolidou, nas referidas cidades, um Império unificado por uma linguagem urbanística e arquitetônica comum, que era um reflexo da imagem de Lisboa. _________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The study is an analysis of iconographic documents related to Five Portuguese cities during their colonial periods Luanda, in Angola, Ilha de Moçambique, in Mozambique, Salvador, in Brazil, Goa, in India and Macau, in China. Through comparison of the first urban settlements, the objective of this study is to conclude that Lisbon was the inspiration in the foundation of the new cities in the 16th century. It also tries to identifying patterns in the landscape structuring and consolidation of the cities in the overseas provinces. There were many political, economical and religious aspects that encouraged the Portuguese to the overseas expansion. Among them, the need to consolidate and unify the kingdom made the kings of Portugal adopt political strategies that led them to the creation of a wide and prosperous empire that was spread all over the globe. Were the continents, the oceans and the long distances barriers to the Portuguese cultural identity? Suppose Lisbon had been, indeed, an inspiration to the foundation of the new cities, what were the characteristics that the new cities had in common? Though the cities were geographically distant from each other and far from Lisbon, a unified empire was consolidated through the works of the navigators in those cities. The urban and architectural structure in the overseas cities was the same, and they reflected the image of Lisbon.
