Predictors of Engagement in the Community Affected by HIV and AIDS

Marcus, Benjamin J. 01 January 2009 (has links)
The goal of this study was to explore factors that lead to engagement in the community affected by HIV and AIDS (CAHA). An additional goal of this study was to better understand the relationships between psychological sense of community (PSOC) and social identification (SI), and their connections to two classes of motivations: community concern motivations (CCM) and esteem enhancement motivations (EEM). These constructs predicted two types of engagement in CAHA: AIDS activism and intentions for future participation in community related activity. Analyses were conducted on existing data (Omoto, 2005). The results indicate that PSOC and SI should be considered as independent constructs that uniquely explain community engagement. CCM were found to mediate these relationships, potentially explaining their links.

Autism in children is a developmental disorder defined by deficits in social interaction, impaired communication and limitations in the standard behavior. There are also immunological changes, in metabolism of membrane phospholipids and in oxidative stress. This study evaluated the levels of the immune activators markers from membrane phospholipids and nitric oxide in 24 autistic children, matched for age and sex with healthy children. This study also investigated the variation of these levels in children with autism with different development profiles. After psychiatric evaluation, blood samples were collected and subjected to analysis of IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, IFN-γ, TNF-α by flow cytometry, to analysis of phospholipase A2 by fluorimetric analysis, to analysis of phospholipids by gas chromatograph and to determination of nitric oxide by the Griess method. The scale of the development of psychoeducational profile revised (PEP-R) was applied. Data were statistically analyzed (ANOVA and post hoc Bonferroni test) using SPSS version13. Plasma levels of IFN-γ and nitric oxide were significantly higher among children with autism compared with the control group. The activity of phospholipase A2 and plasma levels of arachidonic acid were elevated, whereas eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid were reduced among children with autism. The scores obtained in the PEP-R differed significantly between the two groups, but no correlation with the results of laboratory measurements was found. The joint analysis of data suggests an association of oxidative stress with immune dysregulation and alteration of lipid metabolism in infantile autism.

The contemporary status of identifications in subjects with marked changes in the body

Elizabete Regina Almeida de Siqueira 01 December 2009 (has links)
In the context of hedonistic cult of the body and the rise of subjectivism will the top of the range of values of contemporary subjects, we detected the existence of a horizontal mode of identification with those who have the same traits of enjoyment, for example, among those that mark the body. We performed a clinical analysis from the assumptions of psychoanalysis of the speech data of four individuals who submit their bodies to tattoos and body changes. This research found three subjects for whom their bodies are the site of the passions that then fall as a way to appeal for a place and recognition of the Other, and a guy who has the peculiarity of their being anchored in your body changes and is identified with a emblem of joy

The body modification is increasing among women who search for plastic surgery and other aesthetic procedures in order to achieve a body that is praised by the media. Some of them modify their bodies beyond measure pulling their floating ribs out to make their waists slimmer, performing many procedures at the same time or when they exceed the amount of silicon implant in their breasts which detonates an undue behavior guideded by the disproportion. However, the current context is marked by a perverse social organization because it sets itself on the boundaries deletion and on the elation of the jouissance and moves the appearance of perverse traces independently on the clinical structure. Thus, this study aims to highlight some perverse traces in three cases of media women that compulsively change their bodies. Weve collected the depositions displayed on internet videos, focusing on those who dealt with the aesthetic procedures. For analysis, weve selected three perverse traces: disproportion and the boundaries transgression, the partial objects fixation, the body as a fetish and the search for other peoples look as way to achieve jouissance. Those women through the disproportion , deny their lacks by offering their bodies, in parts, as a fetish object to the others look.

Self, family and society in Nadine Gordimer's Burger's Daughter, Rachel Zadok's Gem Squash Tokoloshe, and Doris Lessings's The Grass is Singing

O'Brien, Lauren Leigh 08 September 2013 (has links)
This dissertation examines Nadine Gordimer’s Burger’s Daughter, Rachel Zadok’s Gem Squash Tokoloshe, and Doris Lessing’s The Grass is Singing. It focuses on the development of each of the protagonists’ identities in three realms: the individual, the familial and the societal. Additionally, it is concerned with the specific socio-political contexts in which the novels are set. It employs psychoanalytic and historical materialist frameworks in order to engage with the disparate areas of identity with which it is concerned. The introduction establishes the analytical perspective of the dissertation and explores the network of theoretical frames on which the dissertation relies. Additionally, it contextualises each of the novels, within their historical contexts, as well as in relation to the theory. The first chapter examines Nadine Gordimer’s Burger’s Daughter. It focuses on the protagonist’s assertion of an identity independent of her father’s role as a political activist, and her eventual acceptance of the universal difficulty in negotiating a life which is both private and political. The second chapter, on Rachel Zadok’s Gem Squash Tokoloshe, examines the relationship between the protagonist’s traumatic experiences as a child and her inability to assert an identity as an adult. The similarities between the protagonist’s attempts to address her traumas and thereby create herself anew and South Africa’s employment of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as a means to acknowledge and engage with its traumatic history is of import. The third chapter which deals with Doris Lessing’s The Grass is Singing traces the life of its protagonist, whose identifications remain childish as a result of having witnessed her parents’ difficult relationship. Her understanding of the world is informed by a rigid, binary understanding, which is ultimately disrupted by her relationship with a black employee. She is incapable of readjusting her frame of reference, however, and ultimately goes mad. I conclude that, while my focus has been on personal, familial and social identifications, the standard terms in which identity is examined, namely, race, class, and gender, are present in each of the three tiers of identity with which I have been concerned.
