In this context, the objective of this research was to evaluate the performance of the engine of an agricultural tractor using pure A-S500 diesel, binary (diesel-biodiesel) and ternary (diesel-biodiesel-ethanol) blends. In the case of a mechanical diesel fuel cycle engine, the injection time, known as the injection point, was also modified by changing it by 2 ° (P2), 4 ° (P4) and -2 ° (P-2), before and after the reference point of 0 ° (P0) (original of the motor), so that this moment is advanced and delayed in relation to the original. To evaluate the mechanical performance of the tractor, the data collected in this research were based on the use of a Foucault chain dynamometer coupled to the power take-off, in which the proposed diesel-biodiesel proportions were: B0, B8, B15 and B20, in (E0) and tests using the 1% (E1) ratio of this same substance. The dynamometric tests were performed with four replicates. As reference for the test and the analyzes was applied the condition B0P0E0, with 0.14% more B0P2E0 presented the best value for maximum power, B0E0P0 and B0E1P0 had the best torque values, in specific consumption B15E0P2 had a reduction of 17, 0%, already in consumption hour P-2 had better results being 10.1% of reduction. P-2 was the point of injection with better indexes of IE, RT and RR. Simulation aux Grandes Echelles de l'allumage de moteurs fusées cryotechniques / Large eddy simulation of the ignition of cryogenic rocket engine

Lacaze, Guilhem 20 May 2009 (has links)
The ignition of a cryogenic rocket engine (liquid propellants) is a critical phase. The slightest anomaly in the ignition sequence can lead to the destruction of the entire launcher. The objective of this research work is to set a methodology based on the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) approach, to study the different physical phenomena involved in such ignition transient. The LES method can capture the unsteady processes such as turbulence, two-phase flow physics and chemical kinetics. The numerical tool is first validated in academic and experimental cases, and then applied to a real rocket engine. A gradual approach is employed : the complexity is increased between each validation case, so as to identify the main physical processes. This research work shows that the LES approach, in the context of massively parallel computing, can be used to study the whole ignition sequence of a real cryogenic rocket engine.

Plasma propellant interactions in an electrothermal-chemical gun

Taylor, M J 24 November 2009 (has links)
This Thesis covers work conducted to understand the mechanisms underpinning the operation of the electrothermal-chemical gun. The initial formation of plasma from electrically exploding wires, through to the development of plasma venting from the capillary and interacting with a densely packed energetic propellant bed is included. The prime purpose of the work has been the development and validation of computer codes designed for the predictive modelling of the elect rothe rmal-ch em ical (ETC) gun. Two main discussions in this Thesis are: a proposed electrically insulating vapour barrier located around condensed exploding conductors and the deposition of metallic vapour resulting in a high energy flux to the surface of propellant, leading to propellant ignition. The vapour barrier hypothesis is important in a number of fields where the passage of current through condensed material or through plasma is significant. The importance may arise from the need to disrupt the fragments by applying strong magnetic fields (as in the disruption of metallic shaped charge jets); in the requirement to generate a metallic vapour efficiently from electrically exploding wires (as per ETC ignition systems); or in the necessity to re-use the condensed material after a discharge (as with lightning divertor strips). The ignition by metallic vapour deposition hypothesis relies on the transfer of latent heat during condensation. It is important for the efficient transfer of energy from an exploded wire (or other such metallic vapour generating device) to the surface of energetic material. This flux is obtained far more efficiently through condensation than from radiative energy transfer, because the energy required to evaporate copper is far less than that required to heat it to temperatures at which significant radiative flux would be emitted

[en] EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ABOUT ETHANOL IMPACT IN DIESEL-BIODIESEL-ETHANOL BLENDS IN COMPRESSION IGNITION ENGINES / [pt] ESTUDO EXPERIMENTAL SOBRE O IMPACTO DO ETANOL EM MISTURAS DIESEL-BIODIESEL-ETANOL NOS MOTORES DE IGNIÇÃO POR COMPRESSÃO

ANDREW DAVID MENDES GUEDES 10 August 2017 (has links)
[en] Renewable biofuels have been proposed for a long time as an alternative to the issues concerned to pollutants emission and also society s liability to fossil fuels. Biodiesel and ethanol are renewable commercial fuel candidates for fossil fuels substitution, especially, in compression ignition engines, which are typically more efficient than the spark ignition ones. Diesel s partial replacement, such as the substitution by ternary blends formed by diesel, biodiesel and ethanol, is a strategy applicable to compression ignition engines without the need of further modifications. In this dissertation tests were run in a multi-cylinder compression ignition engine (MWM 4.10 TCA), fueled with diesel, biodiesel (up to 15 percent in volumetric content) and anhydrous ethanol (up to 20 percent in volumetric content) blends. Each mixture should be composed by different alcohol s proportions and always containing a 1 percent volumetric concentration of additive in order to ensure ternary s blend stability. Therefore, tests try to ally diesel s partial replacement by biofuels with engine performance and blends combustion assessment, under some combinations of load, engine speed and injection timing conditions. The tests performed indicate that the start of the combustion experienced up to 4.7 degrees CA postponements, when fueled with a 20 percent ethanol volumetric concentration blend. Still, optimized injection timing investigation brought improvements to engine performance, allowed better ethanol energetic conversions through compression ignition when compared to spark ignition and could also minimize delays caused by ethanol s presence in the beginning of the combustion.

Phenomenological study of ignition and stabilization processes for turbulent swirled flames

Frenillot, Jean-Philippe 08 April 2011 (has links)
This research is dedicated to the study of turbulent flames ignition and stabilization processes in representatives' aircraft combustion chambers. This PHD thesis, fully experimental, is based on studying and understanding local parameters (velocity and fuel concentration) and historical effects of the flame kernel's environment during its propagation on ignition statistics. To explain this statistics, various scenarios arre proposed and discussed. In this way, we justify the existence of high and low efficiency areas thanks to a time development criterion of the flame kernel. The second part of this thesis is dedicated to flame stabilization improvment by using H2 enrichment. Turbulent kerosene/air flames have been doped in gaseous hydrogen. We demonstrate a reduction of pressure oscillations' amplitude for the same flame structure.

Modélisation de la combustion turbulente : application des méthodes de tabulation de la chimie détaillée l'allumage forcé / Numerical simulation of forced ignition using LES coupled with a tabulated detailed chemistry approach

Vallinayagam pillai, Subramanian 12 January 2010 (has links)
The optimization of the ignition process is a crucial issue in the design of many combustion systems. Large eddy simulation (LES) of a conical shaped bluff-body turbulent non-premixed burner has been performed to study the impact of spark location on ignition success. The chemistry part of the simulation is done using tabulated detailed chemistry approach. This burner was experimentally investigated by Ahmed et al at Cambridge (UK). The present work focuses on the case without swirl for which detailed measurements are available. First, cold fkow measurements of velocities and mixture fraction are compared with their LES counterparts, to assess the prediction capabilities of simulations in terms of flow and turbulent mixing. Time history of velocities and mixture fraction are recorded at selected spots, to probe the resolved probability density function (pdf) of flow variables, in an attempt to reproduce, from the knowledge of LES resolved instantaneous flow conditions, the experimentally observed reasons of success or failure of spark ignition. A flammability map is also constructed from the resolved mixture fraction pdf and compared with its experimental counterpart. LES of forced ignition is then performed using flamelet fully detailed tabulated chemistry combined with presumed pdfs (PCM-FPI). Various scenarios of flame kernel development are analyzed and correlated with typical flow conditions observed in this burner. The correlations between velocities and mixture fraction values at the sparking time and the success or failure of ignition are then further discussed and analysed. The rate of flame development during successful or unsuccessful ignition events are analysed and compared against experimental observations. Finally, from asymptotic flame analysis, a novel approach has been proposed to include flame straining effects in the PCM-FPI method developped at CORIA-CNRS. The new model overcomes the problem associated with classical PCM-FPI closure to model kernel quenching due to intense local turbulence. Computations are done including the flame straining effects and the effect brought by the new model on kernel development is analysed in detail.
