In this thesis my purpose is to study the mechanisms and discourses that are the foundations for identification processes, in a contemporary society characterised by increased mobility. By means of a fictitious life history, I relate to this problem constantly through the work. At the beginning of the essay I discuss the traditional, western, philosophical view of the self and its surroundings, which eventually leads me to focus on the theories of the sociology of knowledge. From this perspective I choose to examine globalisation processes and mobility, to create an understanding of how these two, changes the circumstances for the individual identification. In my concluding argument I stress that all research or all studies concerning identification processes must take into account that these identifications always take place with regard to time/place which also means, that it takes place both in real space and in imaginary space. To conclude the imaginary aspect of our spatial perception is essential to any study of identification processes. / denna uppsats är mitt övergripande syfte att studera de mekanismer och diskurser som utgör grunden för identifikationsprocesser i en samtid kännetecknad av ökad mobilitet. Via en fiktiv livshistoria förhåller jag mig till detta problem arbetet igenom. Inledningsvis diskuterar jag den traditionella, västerländska, filosofins syn på självet och dess omgivning, för att sedermera fokusera mig på ett kunskapssociologiskt perspektiv. Utifrån denna plattform väljer jag att studera globaliseringsprocesser och mobilitet för att skapa en förståelse för hur dessa företeelser förändrar förutsättningarna för den enskildes identifikationer. I mitt konkluderande resonemang framhåller jag vikten av att vi i våra funderingar kring identifikationsprocesser måste ta i beaktande att dessa alltid sker i förhållande till rum/tid vilket dessutom sker dels i det reella rummet och dels i det imaginära rummet. För att konkludera den imaginära aspekten av vår rumsliga upplevelse är ytterst viktig att överväga vid studier av identifikationsprocesser.
