The Effects of peer editing versus co-writing on writing in Chinese-as-a-foreign language

Tian, Jun 19 January 2012 (has links)
The study, using a within-group design with eighteen adult high-beginner Chinese L2 learners, investigated the effects of peer review and co-writing on writing in Chinese-as-a-foreign language. Three writing conditions (peer review, co-writing, and individual writing) and three narrative writing topics were counterbalanced for the collection of data, including forty-five writing products, seventy-two questionnaires, videorecorded screen activities and interactions. The research has three main aims: (a) to investigate the effects of peer review and co-writing on writing with respect to fluency, complexity, and accuracy, (b) to explore the nature of verbal interactions during peer review and co-writing, and (c) to investigate students’ perceptions of the three writing activities. With regard to writing performance, the research found no statistically significant differences in measures of fluency and complexity. However, peer review and co-writing resulted in significantly more accurate writing than individual writing, but no difference was observed in the two collaborative writing activities. The analysis of verbal interactions indicated that (1) there were significantly more on-task episodes in peer review than in co-writing; (2) there were significantly more language-related episodes (LREs) and content-related episodes in peer review than in co-writing, while there were significantly more idea-related episodes and text-assessing episodes in co-writing than in peer review; (3) students paid significantly more attention to LRE-lexis and LRE-grammar in peer review than in co-writing, and the differences were mainly observed in discussions on word meanings, verb forms, word usage, and sentence/phrase meanings; and (4) there were also significantly more spelling episodes in peer review than in co-writing. Concerning students’ perceptions, although students tended to prefer co-writing to peer review and peer review to individual writing, they held competing attitudes toward the three activities and believed each of the three had their own strengths, which could not be replaced by the advantages of the other. The findings suggest that peer review, co-writing, and individual writing play different roles in Chinese L2 learners’ development of writing skills, as measured by a range of linguistic indices and as revealed by students’ evaluations. Thus, they are all important because they direct learners to different aspects of their language development. / Graduate

Specifické rysy hudební publicistiky ve vybraných tištěných periodikách v mediálním diskursu síťových médií / Specific features of the music publicistic in representative printed magazines in the period of net-media discourse

Křížová, Lenka January 2013 (has links)
This thesis deals with specifics of textual formulas of music journalism in magazines Týden, Reflex and Respekt and it is based on their articles published from January to July 2011. It contains a content analysis of the word-stock with a special interest in metaphors ant its position in our language. We can see the way how we understand the reality around us which is based on a conceptualization in our minds. And then it reflects how we speak and what meanings we give to concrete words. These metaphoric concepts are followed with concrete examples coming from articles. There is also paid attention to colloquiality and bookishness and their suitability in today's media discourse. There is made a comparison of the individual writing of journalists who represent these magazines and we can also see different attitude in processing the same or similar topics. The theoretic part of this thesis follows the history of criticism with special interest in music criticism. Then we compare today's position of this media discourse and we can also see trends which might be followed in the future.

Idiolekto požymiai elektroniniuose laiškuose / Features of Idiolect in E-mails

Žalkauskaitė, Gintarė 18 January 2012 (has links)
Remiantis atlikto tyrimo rezultatais disertacijoje pateikiamos rekomendacijos teismo lingvistinius autorystės tyrimus atliekantiems ekspertams. / The current study aims to establish, if authors idiolect can be recognized in electronic mails language and to determine the features of lexis and graphics, which can be linked to idiolect. The data has been derived from a corpus of 65,000 words consisting of electronic letters written in Lithuanian by six persons. The WordSmith Tools software was used to generate frequency lists of six subcorpora, representing each person’s language. By using the contrastive method the frequency data of six persons language were compared. The lexis and graphics elements, which were used by one person more often or more rarely than by others and were not determined by the topic, were linked to authors idiolect. As a result of the analysis the classification of lexical and graphical elements is given, which can help recognizing idiolect. The study shows that on a lexical level the main differences between idiolects are in the usage of the modality and stance expressing words, and also the words and abbreviations, which are differently chosen from possible variants. On a graphical level idiolects can be recognized from punctuation marks, emoticons and graphic symbols, used at a different frequency. Based on research results the recommendations for authorship attribution examinations are given.
