Mariefred är en stad full av historia och karaktär. Olika besökare från hela världen kommer hit för att upptäcka det som finns att se. Samtidigt pågår vardagen som vanligt för de knappt 4000 invånarna som bor här permanent. I det här projektet har dessa två sidor av Mariefred legat till grund för utformningen av ett hotell på en plats mitt emellan den gamla stadskärnan och Gripsholms slott. Även staden och slottet är, likt turisten och lokalbon, i många avseenden varandras motsatser. Slottet är en stor, tung och sluten tegelbyggnad, ensam på sin ö. Stadskärnan utgörs istället av många olika trähus som tillsammans bildar en öppen och luftig väv där skalan är väsentligt mindre. Hotellet utgör en länk både mellan människor men även mellan dessa olika byggnadstypologier. På så sätt skapas något nytt i stadsbilden som samtidigt har en stark koppling till sin omgivning.      Hotellets lobby utgörs av en offentlig vertikal spiral som bidrar till att både nattgäster och utomstående besökare tillsammans tar del av hela byggnaden. Detta rum är hotellets kärna och längs dess väg hittar man alla hotellrum i direkt anslutning till de sociala ytorna. Den vertikala spiralen börjar redan utanför byggnaden. En ramp utgör både hotellentré, en plats för lek och en yta att stanna upp på och betrakta tågen som rullar in till Mariefreds järnvägsstation. / Mariefred is a city full of history and character. Different visitors from all over the world come here to discover what there is to see. At the same time the everyday life goes on for the nearly 4,000 residents who live here permanently. In this project, these two sides of Mariefred formed the basis for the design of a hotel in a place right between the old town and the Gripsholm Castle. The city and the castle are in many ways opposites, just like the tourists and the inhabitants in Mariefred.  The castle is a large, heavy and closed brick building. The city center rather consists of many different wooden buildings that together form an open and airy weave in which the scale is much smaller. The hotel forms a link both between people but also between these different building typologies. This creates something new in the cityscape that also has a strong connection to its surroundings. The hotel lobby is made up of a public vertical spiral that contributes to both overnight guests and outside visitors when they take part of the entire building togheter. This room is the heart of the hotel and along its way you will find all the hotel rooms in direct connection to the social areas. The vertical spiral begins outside the building. The beginning consists of a ramp that has different roles. It is both the hotel entrance, a place for playing and an area to stay and watch the trains enter Mariefred’s railway station.
