Energy-efficient Benchmarking for Energy-efficient SoftwarePukhkaiev, Dmytro 20 January 2016 (has links) (PDF)
With respect to the continuous growth of computing systems, the energy-efficiency requirement of their processes becomes even more important. Different configurations, implying different energy-efficiency of the system, could be used to perform the process. A configuration denotes the choice among different hard- and software settings (e.g., CPU frequency, number of threads, the concrete algorithm, etc.). The identification of the most energy-efficient configuration demands to benchmark all configurations. However, this benchmarking is time- and energy-consuming, too. This thesis explores (a) the effect of dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) in combination with dynamic concurrency throttling (DCT) on the energy consumption of (de)compression, DBMS query executions, encryption/decryption and sorting; and (b) a generic approach to reduce the benchmarking efforts to determine the optimal configuration. Our findings show that the utilization of optimal configurations can save wavg. 15.14% of energy compared to the default configuration. Moreover, we propose a generic heuristic (fractional factorial design) that utilizes data mining (adaptive instance selection) together with machine learning techniques (multiple linear regression) to decrease benchmarking effort by building a regression model based on the smallest feasible subset of the benchmarked configurations. Our approach reduces the energy consumption required for benchmarking by 63.9% whilst impairing the energy-efficiency of performing the computational process by only 1.88 pp, due to not using the optimal but a near-optimal configuration.

Batch regions : process instance synchronization based on dataPufahl, Luise, Meyer, Andreas, Weske, Mathias January 2013 (has links)
Business process automation improves organizations’ efficiency to perform work. In existing business process management systems, process instances run independently from each other. However, synchronizing instances carrying similar characteristics, i.e., sharing the same data, can reduce process execution costs. For example, if an online retailer receives two orders from one customer, there is a chance that they can be packed and shipped together to save shipment costs. In this paper, we use concepts from the database domain and introduce data views to business processes to identify instances which can be synchronized. Based on data views, we introduce the concept of batch regions for a context-aware instance synchronization over a set of connected activities. We also evaluate the concepts introduced in this paper with a case study comparing costs for normal and batch processing.

MULTIPLE-INSTANCE AND ONE-CLASS RULE-BASED ALGORITHMSNguyen, Dat 17 April 2013 (has links)
In this work we developed rule-based algorithms for multiple-instance learning and one-class learning problems, namely, the mi-DS and OneClass-DS algorithms. Multiple-Instance Learning (MIL) is a variation of classical supervised learning where there is a need to classify bags (collection) of instances instead of single instances. The bag is labeled positive if at least one of its instances is positive, otherwise it is negative. One-class learning problem is also known as outlier or novelty detection problem. One-class classifiers are trained on data describing only one class and are used in situations where data from other classes are not available, and also for highly unbalanced data sets. Extensive comparisons and statistical testing of the two algorithms show that they generate models that perform on par with other state-of-the-art algorithms.

The series of protests in June 2013 has changed Brazilian political scenery in an abrupt way as an earthquake - the demonstrations began and ended on the television screens. More than base for images, the riots constitute social images (which depend on the social point of view) and are itinerant (to form value and meaning). To comprehend the dimension of these events in the context of instance of the live image, this work studies, by content analyses approach, the special edition of Jornal Nacional in the 20th June 2013. The results show that the point of view of the imagetic speech is cold, unsympathetic and arrogant towards the protesters.

Uma abordagem visual para apoio ao aprendizado multi-instâncias / A visual approach for support to multi-instances learningQuispe, Sonia Castelo 14 August 2015 (has links)
Multiple-instance learning (MIL) is a paradigm of machine learning that aims at classifying a set (bags) of objects (instances), assigning labels only to the bags. In MIL, only the labels of bags are available for training while the labels of instances in bags are unknown. This problem is often addressed by selecting an instance to represent each bag, transforming a MIL problem into a standard supervised learning. However, there is no user support to assess this process. In this work, we propose a multi-scale tree-based visualization called MILTree that supports users in tasks related to MIL, and also two new instance selection methods called MILTree-SI and MILTree-Med to improve MIL models. MILTree is a two-level tree layout, where the first level projects bags, and the second level projects the instances belonging to each bag, allowing the user to understand the data multi-instance in an intuitive way. The developed selection methods define instance prototypes of each bag, which is important to achieve high accuracy in multi-instance classification. Both methods use the MILTree layout to visually update instance prototypes and can handle binary and multiple-class datasets. In order to classify the bags we use a SVM classifier. Moreover, with support of MILTree layout one can also update the classification model by changing the training set in order to obtain a better classifier. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of our approach, showing that visual mining by MILTree can help the users in MIL classification scenarios.

A displeased person answerable to the law raises a curtain, most likely worn out. A black robe appears and announces: ‘Give me the facts, I will give you the law!” This judge then steps aside in order to listen to the exchanges between various parties. He speaks again, change when required some turn of sentences, untangle the plot by retaining, even rearranging one of the ending proposed by the parties. Here is the context, now classic, of the instance established by the guidelines of civil trial. The role of the litigant is thus to delimit the litigious matter and hence, the referral to the judge. The latter should, within the limits, apply to him the law in order to satisfy his jurisdictional function. The question of the respective roles of the judge and the parties over the elements of the case cannot, however, be apprehended in its complexity and dynamism by these rules alone. The distinction between fact and law, because it corresponds only imperfectly to the elements of the actual operative instance, the claim and the plea, provides an unfavourable basis for the determination of judicial activities and their exercise. On the other hand, when confronted with the permanent reform of matter, the stability of these principles challenges, and even astonishes.By considering the elements of the case and their treatment beyond the preliminary provision of the Code, and beyond the Code itself it may be stated that these guiding principles tend to become more blinding than enlightening. Indeed, in reading Article 12 of the Code of Civil Procedure, the basis of the powers and duties of the judge on the law, it is for example established that the judge settle the dispute in accordance with the rules of law that apply to it. It is thus not known that since 2008 the judge has no obligation to rectify the erroneous legal basis of the claim, the same way we do not conceive that his obligation to rule will, since 2017, be limited to the claims contained in the device of the conclusions, admittedly written by lawyers. It is even less anticipated that, in spite of all these phenomena of reduction of what will have to be settled, res judicata will, on the contrary, extend to cover the dispute understood as all that should have been decided. The parties thus collect the burden of the right initially devolved on the judge. Civil procedure therefore offers a new face to the operative principle: the responsibility of the parties and the disempowerment of justice in the realization of rights. The acceleration of the treatment of the cases brings the civil authority closer to the theatre by the requirement of the unit of time. On the other hand, it departs from the rule of unity of place, as judicial policies clearly reflect their desire to promote the amicable settlement of disputes. There is more to hope that the distribution is up to the programme
