The first year of membership of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) in the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers (HGF) was a year of many changes also for the Institute of Ion Beam Physics and Materials Research (IIM). The transition period, however, is not yet over, since the full integration of the Center into the HGF will only be completed in the next period of the so-called program-oriented funding (POF). This funding scheme addresses the six core research fields identified by the Helmholtz Association (Energy; Earth and Environment; Health; Key Technologies; Structure of Matter; Aeronautics, Space and Transport) to deal with the grand challenges faced by society, science and industry. Since the Institute has strong contributions to both core fields “Key Technologies” and “Structure of Matter”, intense discussions were held amongst the leading scientists of the Institute, across the Institutes of the HZDR, and finally with leading scientists of other Helmholtz centers, to determine the most appropriate classification of the Institute’s research. At the end we decided to establish ourselves in Structure of Matter, the core field in which most of the large-scale photon, neutron and ion facilities in Germany are located. As a consequence, the Ion Beam Center (IBC) of the Institute submitted an application to become a HGF recognized large-scale facility, providing more than 50% of its available beam time to external users. This application perfectly reflects the development of the IBC over more than a decade as a European Union funded infrastructure in the framework of the projects “Center for Application of Ion Beams in Materials Research (AIM)” (1998-2000, 2000-2003, 2006-2010) and subsequently as the coordinator of the integrated infrastructure initiative (I3) “Support of Public and Industrial Research using Ion Beam Technology (SPIRIT)” (2009-2013). Another part of the Institute’s activities is dedicated to exploit the infrared/THz free-electron laser at the 40 MeV superconducting electron accelerator ELBE for condensed matter research. This facility is also open to external users and funded by the European Union.

The work submitted is focused on the issue of the feudal institute. Based on an analysis of the Latin terminology, the metamorphoses of the terminology and its context, it attempts to capture the form and importance of this phenomenon in 'everyday practice', as it is portrayed particularly by the diplomatic sources. The text is comprised of two basic parts. The first section deals with the composition of the image of the feudal institution on the background information of the sources of imperial provenience. It is not possible to treat the imperial sources as whole within this work and so attention is focused on the wider region spread in the area of Harz, which is delimited by five bishoprics - Miessen, Naumburg, Hildesheim, Halberstadt and Merseburg. The basic sources are the diplomatic materials of the mentioned dioceses, which complement the collection of documents of the two most powerful secular ducal families asserting influence in this area in the long term - the Houses of Welph and Ascania. The subject of the analysis is first of all the Latin, or German, terminology and its importance in the range from ca the 10th to the beginning of the 14th centuries. Considering the state of the preserved document production, however, the main attention focuses on the last two centuries of the period mentioned....

This thesis deals with German foreign cultural policy in the Czech Republic after 1989 in relation to the promotion of German language promotion. The thesis describes both the development of the conceptions of German foreign cultural policy and the promotion of German language based on activities of three German institutions: Central Agency for German Schools Abroad (ZfA), Goethe-Institut and German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The research period is divided in two parts -before 1999 and since 2000, because the thesis assumes that there have been changes concerning quantity and quality of German policy regarding language promotion since about 2000. In addition the thesis searches for the effects on the real measures in the Czech Republic concerning the conceptual changes in German policy. After the 90's when the German was promoted massively in the Czech Republic as well as in the whole region of Central and Eastern Europe, the promotion of German has been rather declining since 2000. It is given by the lowering interest in the region just as by the lower importance that was attributed to the promotion of German. In deutschen Nationalparks und Biosphärenreservaten gehört der Einsatz von GIS bereits zum Alltag. Aber wie ist die Situation in anderen Staaten Mittel- und Osteuropas? Wie weit sind GIS dort verbreitet, auf welche Weise wird damit gearbeitet, welche Hindernisse bestehen und wo besteht Bedarf an internationalen Kooperationen? Antworten darauf geben die Ergebnisse einer Umfrage unter Verwaltungen von 109 Großschutzgebieten in elf Ländern.

Ökosysteme und die Lebensräume seltener Tier- und Pflanzenarten machen nicht an Staatsgrenzen halt. Grenzgebiete sind aufgrund ihrer peripheren Lage, dünnen Besiedlung und charakteristischen Naturräume wie Flüsse oder Gebirge oft sogar besonders reich an schützenswerten Landschaften. In grenzüberschreitenden Großschutzgebieten ist es erforderlich, auch die Tätigkeit der Schutzgebietsverwaltungen grenzüberschreitend zu koordinieren, um die Kohärenz der Schutzbemühungen sicherzustellen. In der Nationalparkregion Sächsisch-Böhmische Schweiz sammeln die Verantwortlichen auf deutscher und tschechischer Seite Erfahrung in einem gemeinsamen Projekt.
