A Comparison of the Expectations of Parents, Staffs, and Directors Concerning Children's Activities and Parent and Staff Roles in Three Day Care CentersLeslie, Candace D. 08 1900 (has links)
Expectations in six areas of concern were explored by means of a questionnaire distributed to parents, staffs, and directors of three day care centers. These included physical setting, educational activities, social development, staff relationships with children, staff relationships with parents, and parent relationships with the center. Responses averaged over 50 per cent in each category of respondent. Analysis showed that although there were areas of almost total agreement, there were a number of statements that demonstrated a wide divergence in the expectations of the respondents. This study and the related literature indicate that there is cause for concern that children's needs for consistency in child-rearing practices are not always being met.

Život člověka s handicapem / Living with DisabilityStárková, Jana January 2011 (has links)
In my thesis, The Life of a Handicapped Person, I tried to chart what influences the future of such person and how problems trouble him in life. In the first chapters I defined and separated the types of disabilities, their different impact and problems in diagnosis. The central part of the work is the chapter on systems that influence the life of a disabled person. These systems are mostly influenced by the family because, by accepting the child, the parent, as well as the selected type of upbringing, affects the future of the person and likewise the disabled child has a vital influence on the family. Also included is a chapter on health care, social services and education. The quality of life of a disabled person is also influenced by friends, hence a social process, and partnerships, and equally important is the person's professional role. The fourth chapter relates to research which was carried out by a questionnaire on a group of 46 people with physical disabilities. On the basis of the answers, I verified the validity of the six pre-defined hypotheses.

Attachment, defense mechanisms and emotion usage in children in institutions during middle childhood within a South African context.Robinson, Megan McKenzie 02 April 2013 (has links)
Although the importance of Attachment in the normal development of a child has repeatedly been shown (Bowlby, 1961; 1979) there is a limited amount of research into its relationships with the usage of defense mechanisms and emotions. This research, therefore, investigated the relationships between attachment type, defense mechanisms and emotions during middle childhood (8-12 years) in 64 children from 4 children’s homes and 1 hospital in the Gauteng area. The children completed the Deferential Emotions Scale IV (DES-IV), the Attachment Story Completion Test (ASCT) and the Attachment Security Scale (ASS). The legal guardians of the children completed the Comprehensive Assessment of Defense Scale (CADS). Significant correlations were found to exist between the usage defense mechanisms and emotions. The results obtained from the analyses therefore suggest a complex interplay of relationships between attachment, defense mechanisms and emotion during middle childhood for the children in these institutions. For example, the research found that certain defense mechanisms and emotions were found to be correlated in a complex and interrelated system of interactions. Similarly, although no significant associations were found between attachment, defense mechanisms and emotions were found, the frequency distributions provided detailed information suggesting that attachment does influence the defenses used and emotion during middle childhood. These finding suggest that further research needs to be conducted in this area to further this knowledge base and to inform the caregivers and staff at institutions such as those included in the study.

Disabling seclusion: an integrated job empowerment and skills development centre for persons with intellectual disabilitiesWalele, Malika January 2016 (has links)
This document is submitted in partial fullfilment for the degree:
Master of Architecture [Professional] at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, in the year 2015. / People with intellectual disabilities are considered to be
marginalised in our society. They continue to face prejudices,
stigmas and are discriminated against resulting in social
exclusion.
This thesis develops a framework and methodology for
pursuing inclusive environments and viable productivity within
the workplace for persons with intellectual disabilities. The
lack of opportunities within the workplace for individuals with
intellectual disabilities intensi es their exclusion from society.
The road to achieving inclusivity within the workplace
has become a challenging one to navigate, as previous
strategies which were developed to enable equality are far
removed from what was intended. More often than ever
before, employers are challenged from both a legal and
political perspective for failing to diversify the workplace.
Equality advocates as well as those who attempt to diversify
their companies face obstacles within the workplace, namely
inadequate resources or uncertainty about their appropriate
role or approach in dealing with minorities.
The building will serve as a learning hub, used by both
persons with intellectual disabilities and people who are
commonly referred to as able bodied. It will function as
a level between education (if any) and the period before
entering the workplace. The learning hub will afford persons
with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to explore their
capabilities in environments similar to that of a workplace
and gain knowledge and experience prior to entering the
workplace.
The program envisaged in this thesis will demonstrate that
this intervention is mutually bene cial to a company and the
individual with an intellectual disability. In the first instance,
the employer acquires knowledge and skills to act as a catalyst in enabling the transition of a person with an intellectual disability into
the workplace to augment inclusivity. Secondly, the person with an intellectual
disability through the program will be clothed with knowledge and expertise
enabling meaningful participation amongst able-bodied employees.
The transformation within workplaces as a result of the knowledge gained
through this centre should create an enabling environment that incorporates
the individual’s needs or one that best satis es their needs. The support by
the employer is vital in the outcome and success of integrating people with
disabilities into the social framework.
The building is developed around a range of interactive programs between
those with intellectual disabilities and people acting as the supervisors from
workplaces. The supervisors, through training will be best placed to oversee
progression and be empathetic toward staff with intellectual disabilities. This
will enable them to transfer their knowledge and expertise of dealing with and
accommodating employees with intellectual disabilities to their respective
workplaces. A mock work environment will form the basis of the experiential
training ground and in conjunction with job sampling will establish where a
user will be best suited within the work environment. Public facilities encourage
members of the public to become active participants within the space providing
exposure and understanding towards those with intellectual disabilities.
The centre is expected to be both accessible and lasting and will mediate
experiential training and aligning it to workplace practices. The centre will be a
vital space to enhance inclusion and for producing sustainable change for this
marginalised group of persons.
The building is located within an educational precinct on Melle Street,
Braamfontein. The site which is in close proximity to the Central Business District
allows for the centre to feed into businesses and vice versa. The location also
allows for easy access to people from all over Johannesburg utilising various
transport methods. The site being amid universities and schools ensures
integration and optimum use, for educational facilities to link into this program.
It also allows for social cohesion through exposure between the users of the
building and other students in the surrounding area. / EM2017

Náhradní péče o dítě v České republice / Substitute family care in the Czech RepublicTrnková, Lucie January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation is concerned with the issues surrounding substitute family care in the Czech Republic and presents an analysis of its legal regulation as set out in both private law and public law regulations. The term substitute family care encompasses several independent legal institutions, which together form a system serving to protect children at risk who cannot grow up in their own family. The system of substitute care is divided into family-type individual care on the one hand and collective care provided in institutional facilities on the other. This dissertation examines the historical development of forms of substitute care, analyses their current legal regulation, including procedural regulation, and evaluates the interconnectedness and mutual harmoniousness of individual legal regulations. It analyses the inner workings of the substitute care system and delineates the rights and obligations of entities which enter into it in various capacities, with an emphasis on how the fulfilment of the rights of a minor is enforced and how their best interest is considered. Given the subject matter, the topic of the dissertation is approached in an interdisciplinary fashion, for the interdisciplinary cooperation of individual persons acting on behalf of the state in the legal relations of...

O abrigamento de crianças de zero a seis anos de idade em Ribeirão Preto: caracterizando esse contexto / Institutionalization of 0-6-Year-Old Children in Ribeirão Preto: Characterizing the ContextSerrano, Solange Aparecida 12 June 2008 (has links)
The institutionalization of poor children has historically and culturally predominated in Brazil. The juridical doctrine practiced over time, the conceptions about family and children, and the social inequality all have influenced the child care services. In Brazil, the Child and Adolescent Statute foresees that \"keeping the child in foster institution\" is a transient and peculiar measure. The objective of the present research is to characterize the institutional situation of children aged 0 to 6 years old who live in four foster institutions situated in Ribeirão Preto by examining the sheltered children and their families (socio-demographic data) as well as their path towards institutionalization. Data were collected by the researcher, who is also psychologist of the Court of Ribeirão Preto, SP. The period of time between April 2003 and April 2005 was studied and the corresponding records/files were obtained from the childrens foster institutions, from the Psychology and Social Services database, and from the court processes. Two types of data were collected, namely, one relative to both children and their path towards institutionalization and other relative to their family. Besides, further procedures were performed in order to better understand the real situation of the children: interviews with coordinators of the shelters, tutor-counsellors, Chairman of the Ribeirão Preto Council for Child\'s and Adolescents Rights, and social actors in Porto Alegre, RS. Considering the complexity of the phenomenon, the theoretical-methodological basis to guide both data collection and study analysis involves the perspective of the Network of Meanings. Among the results, the most significant one was the lack of information on the children and their families; 258 children were sheltered in the period of study; 59% were boys; 51% were afro-descending; 50% knew nothing about their father; 78% had siblings; 55% received family visits; 27% had been previously sheltered; and 86% lived in poor areas. Their families were predominantly afro-descending; the mothers were the only responsible for the children; their parents had low educational level and most of them were unemployed or worked in low-qualification jobs with lower wages; and they had a reduced number of referrals to family social programs. The reasons for institutionalization include negligence, abandonment and transitory lack of social conditions in association with financial difficulties. The length of institutionalization ranged from short periods of five days to longer periods of one year or more; 63% of the children returned to their family of origin, and 13% were adopted. One of the foster institution is municipal and the other ones are ONGs, and all have time restrictions regarding family visits. Only two foster institutions have programs for family reintegration and post-institutionalization follow-up. These institutions suffer political and contextual changes, often resulting in care interruption and differences in the method of recording the data. Arrangement difficulties were observed among the actors involved in establishing criteria for institutionalization and (de)institutionalization in addition to the lack of public policy. By giving visibility to such children and families, the present research provides updated local mapping guidelines as well as reveals the dynamics of institutionalization. Through these indicators, this reality can be changed as follows: creation and maintenance of a recording data system for children and their families, and subsidies for formulating public policies to this population.
