The special education school, a choice for children with autism and intellectual disability associated with 0-5 years

Goes, Ricardo Schers de 03 August 2012 (has links)
This dissertation aimed to investigate the reasons that parents of children with autism and intellectual disability associated with enrolling their children in early childhood education in special education schools. To meet the proposed objective, this research presents an overview of early childhood education in Brazil, highlighting the issue of special education, approaching their present ambiguity in the rules and legislation, and to discuss about the fragility and lack of consensus in the conceptualization and characterization of autism and intellectual disabilities. Interviews were conducted with parents of children with autism and intellectual disability associated with, who attended early childhood education in special education school. What was observed in the interviews was that parents initially sought a mainstream school for their children, but due to difficulties, just by choosing to remove them from regular school and enroll them in private schools for special education because they believe that these schools may offer better conditions for the process of schooling of their children. When analyzing the parental reports in the light of Critical Theory of Society, lifted some evidence that the special education school often appears as the best possible education for children with autism and intellectual disability associated, so that parental choice has consistency. However, there was no resistance and coping of parents faced with the difficulties in including their children in mainstream schools, which indicates an attitude adjustment of parents in relation to limits on the schooling of their children with autism and disabilities associated intellectual. Moreover, we discuss the question that early childhood education can be an inclusive environment given the right conditions for children to have contact with diversity and children with and without disabilities attending the same school, this approach may have a decreased prejudice toward different

This investigation is based in a triple theoretical perspective, discussed in the first chapter, with the contributions of Apple (1989), Sacristán (1998) and Perrenoud (1993) about curriculum, scholar education and pedagogical activities. In the sequence the issues about the intellectual disability definitions and their relation with schooling process, which one of most contributors was Vigotski (1989). In the end we looking for to take the ownership of Bourdieu (2009) contributions in the field of high society schooling to analyze the relationship between schooling and intellectual disability. The hypothesis of this investigation, that the curriculum of a special school for high society students with intellectual disability differs from the others schools that doesn t have this focus, and its main function is the child development by an better appropriation of scholar contents, can not be proven because the scholar organization and the pedagogical practices, mainly based in routinization of activities and not by the exploration of the manifestation of the students, seem to express a fixed and unchanging perspective of cognitive impairments presented by students / Este estudo teve como objetivo geral a identificação e a análise do currículo e do trabalho pedagógico realizado em uma escola especial destinada a alunos com deficiência intelectual proveniente de camadas sociais superiores, com a intenção de verificar qual é o trabalho educativo realizado e se tal escola apresenta de alguma forma um ensino diferenciado.

Paralleled Support Models for Young Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Klym, Lucy Ellen 01 January 2017 (has links)
In the State of Indiana, for students over the age of 14 who have been diagnosed with intellectual or developmental disabilities, the transition from special education to Medicaid waiver oversight should occur seamlessly, but gaps in integrated and aligned goal development strategies remain. As a consequence, students who need adult-based support may not be receiving the full scope of services to which they are entitled. Using common-pool resource theory as a foundation, the purpose of this explanatory case study of transitional services to Indiana Medicaid was to understand, from the perspective of disability support service staff, the barriers to effective quality of life outcomes and collaboration among government agencies involved in the transition process. In-depth interview data were collected from a total of 6 vocational rehabilitation specialists, directors, and transition coordinators. These interview data were inductively coded and thematically analyzed according to identified common pool action areas. Key research findings included: (a) the need for implementation of student self-determination principles, (b) a strengthening of sustainable goal development directed toward student employment, and (c) an overall enhanced collaboration between key disability service support staff roles to create sustainable structures. Positive social change opportunities include recommendations to the Indiana Division of Disability and Rehabilitation Services to improve the overarching student-to-adult transition process, reduce redundant funding streams, and streamline goal development to create a sustainable, collaborative experience for students over their lifespan of support.
