Learning Rates Between Introverts and Extroverts in EMG Biofeedback Training

In order to test Eysenck's hypothesis that introverts would condition faster than extroverts, twenty undergraduates were given muscle tensing and muscle relaxing trials using a feedback myograph to obtain electrical activity levels of the frontalis muscle. The subjects were divided into two groups of ten each. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator was used to select ten students classified as introverts and ten classified as extroverts. .Both groups were given forty thirty-second trials to learn muscle relaxing and tensing. Analysis of covariance indicated a significant within trials effect for both the relaxation and tensing trials. No significant differences were found, however, between the introverts and the extroverts in either the muscle relaxing or muscle tensing training.

The problem with which this study is concerned is that of considering the relationship between neurotic anxiety and several personality variables. Even though anxiety has been the subject of many studies, it is still poorly defined. The basic model to be considered is Eysenck's three-dimensional model between neuroticism and introversion-extroversion. This model is expanded to include Rotter's locus of control and reinforcement expectancy (optimism and pessimism).

Syftet med den här studien var att undersöka om faktorerna ångest som state, ångest som trait samt introversion kunde predicera skolfrånvaro under en kortare samt längre tid hos 156 gymnasieungdomar i årskurs två och tre. Enligt tidigare forskning har man kunnat se att dessa faktorer kan leda till skolfrånvaro, men då i första hand hos yngre individer. Studien genomfördes med en enkät som var baserad på Eysencks EPQ-R (Eysencks Personality Questionnaire) samt STAI (State-Traite Anxiety Inventory) (Form Y). I enkäten fanns också en demografisk del samt en egenkonstruerad del för att mäta frånvaro. Resultaten visade att ångest som state, ångest som trait samt introversion tillsammans kunde predicera frånvaro med 50.7% för en kortare period samt med 55.2% för en längre period. Enskilt predicerade ångest som state 38.2%, ångest som trait 34.9% och introversion 2% av frånvaron förhöstterminen.
