Environmental Security : A conceptual investigating study

Sporring Jonsson, Elin January 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to explore the concept of environmental security. A concept that have made way on to the international arena since the end of the Cold War, and have become of more importance since the 1990’s. The discussion regarding man-made environmental change and its possible impacts on the world is very topical; especially with the Nobel Peace Prize winners in 2007 the Intergovernmental panel on climate change (IPCC) and Al Gore. The concept of environmental security is examined through a conceptual investigating study. The reason for this type of study is due to the complexity of the concept and a hope to find a ‘best’ definition to it. A conceptual investigating study is said to help create order in an existing discussion of a social problem, hence the reason for it in this thesis. The outcome of this thesis is that it is near impossible to find a ‘best’ or one definition to the concept of environmental security and that another method to deal with the concept might have presented another result.

Shadowing practices: Ethnographic accounts of private eyes as entrepreneurs

Engstrom, Craig L. 01 May 2010 (has links)
In recent years, entrepreneurship studies scholars have begun studying entrepreneurship from a process-oriented philosophy and with an interest in the prosaic, everyday practices of entrepreneurs. In keeping with these "new movement" approaches, I have tried to "catch" entrepreneurship as it is happening within the field of private investigations. An in-depth, two-year field study of private investigators engaged in the entwined practices of investigating and entrepreneuring was conducted. Methodologically, I shadowed five private investigators and interviewed an additional 25. Because shadowing is an emergent methodology, an in-depth discussion of conducting and writing shadowing research is provided. As noted in this discussion, it is important that writing remain primarily descriptive yet linked to dominant contemporary discourses. Consequently, an overview of dominant narrative themes in popular and academic discourses about private investigating and entrepreneurship are included. Based on the framework of this methodology, dominant narrative themes, and field notes, various culturally-situated accounts of private investigator practices are offered. The findings of this research project suggest that private investigators use various rhetorical and practical strategies to successfully and simultaneously complete investigative and business-related tasks, such as "planting suspicions," using gender and race to strategically position themselves in relation to others in opportunistic ways, and incorporating contemporary technology into their work routines. Drawing on actor-network-theory, I argue that opportunities are enacted through a series of taken-for-granted and everyday interactions among subjects and objects. This research privileges descriptive accounts over theory-building. However, the descriptive accounts of the practices of subjects and objects suggest pragmatic solutions for private investigators to create and manage entrepreneurial opportunities. For example, I propose that private investigators should collectively engage in practices that further professionalize their field. Such professionalizing activities would include, among other things, engaging in knowledge accumulation through academic and professional research activities and professional association public relations campaigns. Insights are also provided regarding the role of rhetoric and technology in opportunity creation and destruction. Readers interested in organization communication and theory will find many of the descriptions to be empirically rich examples of ethno-methods used by actors in highly institutionalized contexts. Similarly, these scholars may also find the descriptions to validate recent arguments regarding organizing as "hybridized actions" (or action nets) occurring in multiple spaces, places, and times. The examples herein demonstrate the usefulness of shadowing as an approach to understanding organizing practices, especially in fields where actors are always "on the move." Readers interested in private investigating will find many of the examples rich in techniques that will enhance profitability. Finally, readers interested in entrepreneurship studies will undoubtedly find many novel potential research projects that are embedded in the various thick descriptions throughout the document.

The use of scale models for investigating the dynamic behaviour of rope-guide mine shaft installations

Van der Elst, Willem Jacob January 1965 (has links)
In order to establish the rules and criteria· to be satisfied in order to develop a scale model, which may be employed to predict the dynamic behaviour of a fullscale rope-guide mineshaft installation, the theory of the dynamic behaviour of rope-guides is considered. In order to establish to what degree a scale model rope-guide system may be expected to simulate the dynamic behaviour of its fullscale prototype a series of correlation test on an existing rope-guide installation and its dynamic scale model are described. A further series of model investigations into the aerodynamic scale effects which may occur in rope-guide installations, are also described. These investigations demonstrate certain limitations in the use of dynamic scale models of rope-guides and also explain the mechanism of air flow in shaftscontaining bluff bodies. On the strength of the experience gained in this research recommendations are made for the execution of efficient experimental investigations into the dynamic behaviour of various rope-guide mineshaft installations. 6ome information is also provided on the actual design of fullscale rope-guide systems. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 1965. / gm2014 / Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering / unrestricted

Sustainable development analysis of national methods of assessing potentially contaminated sites

Holmström, Christina January 2010 (has links)

In this thesis, several national methods used for investigating and/or assessing potentially contaminated sites have been analysed from a sustainable development perspective. To add a practical perspective to the analysis, a case study of the Swedish method’s initial site investigation was performed. The aim was to see how the national methods take the sustainable development aspects into consideration and based on the results see which method that would be most suitable when working towards sustainable development. The results showed that the methods do take the aspects of sustainable development into consideration. Based on how the aspects were taken into consideration, the methods used in the United Kingdom (England and Wales) and Norway are considered to be the most suitable when working towards sustainable development. The case study showed that differences between the theoretical and practical work can be found, and that the economic aspect in particular is given more priority in praxis.

Investigating the application of the asset-based approach in career facilitation

Coetzee, Sonja 20 December 2006 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the asset-based approach as alternative in career facilitation. In traditional career counselling, the career counsellor is seen as an expert and one-stop service provider that matches clients to careers. Alternatively, an asset-based career facilitator aims at facilitating sustainable career development skills by means of applying asset-based principles such as collaboration and shared responsibility. In this study, client-partners were viewed from several complementary theoretical frameworks, namely the asset-based approach, bio-ecological model of human development, Positive Psychology and the process of career facilitation. In addition, phenomenology was selected as meta-theory to guide the instrumental case study. Five career seeking client-partners between the ages of 16 and 18 were chosen according to criteria, and took part in an approximately six week asset-based career facilitation process. Client-partners were aware that the process was under study and willingly reflected on the process after completion. Thematic analysis resulted in the following themes: firstly, it appeared that individual client-partner profiles impacted on the application of asset-based principles. Factors pertaining to individual client profiles are personality traits, age, unique family dynamics, career interests and previous career assessment experiences. Secondly, applying asset-based principles seemed to impact on the career facilitation process with regard to the challenging role of the asset-based career facilitator as well as advantages and disadvantages of applying such principles. Thirdly, it looked as if the entrenched nature of the old paradigm or medical model impacted on the process as some client-partners still preferred the expert matching done in traditional career counselling and resisted being a partner in the career facilitation process. Findings suggest indicators and contra-indicators concerning the application of asset-based principles and strategies in career facilitation, as well as implicate recommendations with regard to training and further research. / Dissertation (MEd (Educational Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2005. / Educational Psychology / unrestricted

Investigating the NIN Structure

Holmér, Viktor, Lundmark, Lukas January 2016 (has links)
In this thesis the NIN artificial neural network structure created by Min Lin et al in 2014 is investigated. This is done by varying stage numbers and layer depth. By doing this ten different networks including the original NIN were created. Testing is carried out on a preprocessed version of the CIFAR10 dataset for these ten networks for a maximum of 150’000 iterations. The results show that the number of stages generally affect NIN performance more than layer depth does. The network with three stages and a layer depth of two performs best at a top accuracy of 87.44%. This is below Min Lin et al’s results. However, this is likely due to overfitting and lack of specifics on their training methods. The thesis concludes that studies of different types of micro-networks in the NIN are required. Studies are also required on deeper NINs with larger datasets to prevent the overfitting observed in the results. Larger datasets could be obtained by data augmentation. Furthermore, the results suggests that less complicated (by less complicated it is meant that the network stages have less depth) NIN implementations are more accurate than deeper ones. Testerna utf¨ors p˚a en f¨orprocesserad version av CIFAR10-databasen f¨or alla tio n¨atverk i maximalt 150’000 iterationer. Resultaten visar p˚a att modulantalet generellt p˚averkar NINs prestanda mer ¨an lagerdjupet.
