<p> This study compared empathy scores, as measured by the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) with participants&rsquo; ability to correctly identify Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). Participants were 114 American Muslims. Of the 114 participants 58 participants provided qualitative data in the form of comments that were coded. Female participants were found to be significantly different when compared to normative sample of females that have completed the IRI. The second analysis utilized a mixed-method approach where the comments section of the results was coded, and groups of data were formed based on this coding. Analysis of this data was done again using t-tests and comparing specific grouped populations with normative samples. t-test conducted on females that participated in the study showed a significant difference in their fantasy scale scores on the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) compared to those in the general population. Muslim American females appeared to have a significantly lower score on the fantasy scale of the IRI than the general population. Though no other t-tests were significant, a trend in comments and those that were able to identify unique aspects of intimate partner violence was recognized in the data. Specifically, a subgroup of the population was able to identify in-law abuse as a component of the scenario presented to them showing that this specific type of IPV warrants further research and investigation in the Muslim American population.</p><p>

This poetry collection explores the concept of memory as a function of identity and is based on the ten years or so that I spent living and working in Islamic countries during the 1970s and 1980s. It is an attempt to create a record of a life lived in unfamiliar territories where cultural and social norms are very different from those with which I was brought up. The collection comprises four sections, each having a distinct character, attributable in part to the use of poetic forms chosen to complement specific periods and places. I experimented with haibun, haiku and prose poetry as well as free verse to achieve the desired effect. Themes of memory, place, people and social comment are woven throughout this collection to create a sense of unity within the whole. The accompanying critical essay, 'Writing Mindful of Ghosts', considers the processes involved in such a venture and refers to some of the poets whose work interests and inspires me, as well as offering information on the places and times that informed the poems.

Magister Commercii - MCom (Business and Finance) / This master's thesis report is a record of my action research study conducted at a traditional bank in South Africa. The report follows a narrative writing style. It contains my personal learnings and reflections. In it I record my practices aimed at promoting Islamic banking products of a traditional bank. In undertaking this action research, I employed interventions whereby I improved my own learning and behaviour through practice. This action research took place within the customer facing division of a national traditional bank in the Western Cape.
