The Online trombone journal : a case study of credibility, accessibility, and permanence in electronic journal publishing

Human, Richard B. January 2001 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to answer the question: How does the Online Trombone Journal address the issues of credibility, accessibility, and permanence in the publishing of an electronic journal?Documents from the Online Trombone Journal were examined in order to discover what specific methods are in place addressing credibility. Issues of prominent brass-related print journals were examined in order to locate article citations. Interviews were conducted with authors who are published in both an established print journal and the Online Trombone Journal. The Online Trombone Journal was searched for in both standard print indices and also on-line search engines in order to determine accessibility. To investigate permanence, on-line documents at the Online Trombone Journal concerning archiving were investigated, and an interview conducted with the publisher. The existence of a Review Board at the Online Trombone Journal, as well as standard guidelines for the review process indicates that credibility is addressed through peer-review of articles. Research showed that articles in the Online Trombone Journal have not yet begun to appear in other scholarly resources. In the area of accessibility, the content of the Online Trombone Journal is not yet indexed in standard music indices. The Online Trombone Journal does rank very high in searches using the term "trombone" on Internet search engines.Addressing permanence, research shows that apart from visiting the Online Trombone Journal web site, there is no other method for accessing its content. Thepublisher of the Online Trombone Journal indicates that a CD-ROM of all articles will be published and distributed to libraries and collection agencies in order to address the issue of permanence. The Online Trombone Journal has done an effective job of addressing the concerns of credibility and accessibility in on-line journal publishing. Permanence, an ongoing concern for all a journals, is a concern to the publisher, and will be addressed in the near future. / School of Music

Unbundling a Big Deal: Comparing Three Data Sources to Come to Decisions

Dawson, Diane January 2014 (has links)
Academic libraries in Canada acquire many “big deal” journal packages through a national consortium, the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN). Recently, negotiations with the American Chemical Society (ACS) broke down and it appeared that member libraries would need to negotiate with ACS individually for the Web Editions bundle of 40+ titles. It soon became clear that the University Library, University of Saskatchewan would likely no longer be able to afford the entire package, and tough decisions would need to be made. Usage data on each title were readily available – but is that enough evidence? Working under the common assumption that the primary users of this package are the Chemistry Department researchers, a citation analysis was conducted on what ACS journals these users recently published in and cited in their articles. The Chemistry Department was kept informed of developments in the ACS/CRKN situation, and expressed interest and concern in the outcome. In an effort to continue to engage chemistry researchers and offer them a voice in the process, a survey of their opinions on each ACS title was also conducted. It was hoped that combining data from these three discrete sources: usage statistics, citation analyses, and user feedback, would enable us to arrive at the most conscientious, evidence-based decisions possible. This presentation will discuss the outcome of this thorough analysis and consider the benefits and challenges of this comprehensive methodology and whether it is practical in every situation. / Slides from "Featured Paper" presentation to STS Research Forum, American Library Association Annual Conference, Las Vegas, June 2014

A Study in Using Sketching Techniques to Develop Cohesive Narrative Art

Cleesattel, Michelle 11 August 2011 (has links)
This is an arts-based research study on the effects of applying extensive and diverse sketching techniques to the development of a cohesive body of work, which reflects the significant and meaningful events of the artist-researcher’s life. The research techniques employed and studied consist of looking at historical exemplars, sketching, reflecting, critiquing, and revising. The results of the research were then reflected upon and applied to the field of art education in an attempt to discover the benefits for both teaching and learning in kindergarten through 12th grade curriculums.

Modelling of fluid flow in multiple axial groove water lubricated bearings using computational fluid dynamics

Tanamal, Tan Kong Hong Ryan January 2007 (has links)
Extensive research has been conducted in the area of journal bearings over many years for various operating conditions and geometry, effects of different types of lubricants (oil and water), different numbers (zero, one and three) and positions of grooves and the flow of lubricant between the shaft and bearing. One area of research has been developing methods to minimize the experimental time and cost of predicting the performance of journal bearings operating over a wide variety of conditions. This has led to numerical methods being developed and utilised for this purpose. Numerical methods are an important foundation for the development of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). CFD method has proved to be a very useful tool in this research field. This project uses a CFD (specifically FLUENT) approach to simulate the fluid flow in a water lubricated journal bearing with equal spaced axial grooves. Water is fed into the bearing from one end. The lubricant is subjected to a velocity induced flow, as the shaft rotates and a pressure induced flow, as the water is pumped from one end of the bearing to the other. CFD software is used to simulate the fluid flow phenomenon that occurs during the process. Different parameters such as eccentricity ratio, number of grooves and groove orientation to the load line were examined. Lubricant pressure and velocity profiles were obtained and compared with available theoretical and experimental results. Two dimensional studies showed that the predicted maximum pressure and load carrying capacity from CFD were similar to the results from theoretical calculations. A small percentage difference (1.78% - 3.76%) between experimental and theoretical results was found. The pressure distribution in the lubricant shows that grooves decrease the pressure and load carrying capacity of the bearing. Swirl or turbulence does occur in the groove is affected by the viscosity of the lubricant. Three dimensional studies show that the pressure drops linearly from one end of the bearing to the other for no groove, concentric and three grooves cases. As the eccentricity increases, for one groove cases, the shape of the pressure profile changes to parabolic shape at positive region while the other pressure profiles drop linearly. The magnitude of the velocity it the bearing gap increased from 0.8 m/s to about 2.9 m/s when the shaft speed increased from zero to 5.5 m/s for a concentric and no groove case, similar changes were noted for all other cases. An interesting observation occurs when implementing the pressure profiles along the bearing. At cases such as zero and one groove condition and e = 0.4 and 0.6, lubricant flow back is observed at both inlet and outlet i.e. at certain area of the inlet, lubricant flowed out of the bearing against the supply pressure, a similar situation occurred at the exit of the bearing.

Women and their journals: navigating depression through consciousness-raising, resistance and action

Western, Deborah Jane January 2009 (has links)
Depression in women is a major mental health issue and social work practitioners can, at some stage in their careers, expect to work with women experiencing depression. Journal therapy, the use of writing for therapeutic purposes, is one example of support and intervention offered to women. The use of journal therapy and specifically the use of journalling by women in Women’s Journalling Groups were investigated in this research. Limited research had been undertaken in the area of journal therapy with women experiencing depression. / The research was undertaken in four phases and used a modified form of grounded theory to develop the research design and to identify and articulate ideas about women’s use of journalling during depression. Phase one established the baseline knowledge for the research through a Co-operative Inquiry underpinned by feminist research principles. Findings from the Inquiry identified: / Two key methods of journalling and women’s responses to depression: • The Considered Acknowledgement, Acceptance and Contemplation framework • The Proactive Resistance, Rehearsal, Agency and Action framework; / Four key narratives that women had created about their journalling and their understanding of depression in women: • Identification and expression of emotions; • Identity, sense of self and self-value; • Structural and social roles, relationships and expectations; and • Transformative choices, opportunities and accomplishments; / Phase two involved the conceptualising, formalising and transfer of this knowledge into the development of a Women’s Journalling Group program. Through the facilitation of two Women’s Journalling Groups in phase three, the journalling activities were found by women to be relevant and meaningful for them in assisting them to understand their depression and move toward recovery. Phase four included the final stage of knowledge utilisation and transfer. / A most significant and new finding from this research was that journalling undertaken by the women was a form of action in response to their depression. Far from being a passive, ruminative, purposeless pastime, journalling was an evolving and sustaining action that enabled the women to gain insights and understandings into themselves and their depression. Journalling activities enabled women to identify and express the many feelings and thoughts that attached to their depression. In reaching clearer understandings of themselves and their depression and in gaining confidence in making choices about their future, women were engaged in processes of consciousness-raising and resistance. Resistance to social and structural expectations, roles and stereotypes was important for the women who could then redefine and redevelop their authentic sense of self and identity. Resistance could occur on an individual level in the journal and on a collective level within Women’s Journalling Groups. / The major outcomes of this research have resulted in a model of journalling that has been used to develop a theoretically grounded Women’s Journalling Group program. Whist some further developmental work is required with the program, it nevertheless provides a tested therapeutic intervention that can be offered to women experiencing depression.

Annie Ernaux et l'écriture du journal / Annie Ernaux and the diary writing

Chompupol, Anusorn 06 January 2017 (has links)
This thesis aims to study the diary writing of Annie Ernaux from seven diaristic texts: Journal du dehors, “Je ne suis pas sortie de ma nuit”, La Vie extérieure, Se perdre, “photojournal” in Écrire la vie, L’Atelier noir and Regarde les lumières mon amour. These diaries are differentiated by their forms and their contents: intimate diary, impersonal diary, literary diary, and photojournal. They also have links with the literary works of their author. We were interested first of all in their poetics, based on the theoretical framework of diary form in order to analyze their time transcription, their fragmentary structure and the diarist’s figure. Then we studied the triple role played by her diaristic practice: the need to keep a record of personal experience and social facts, the psychological assistance in daily life and the self-discovery. Finally, we analyzed the resonances in the texts of our corpus, their links with diary fragments published in literary journals, as well as the relationship between diaries and literary works, in their themes, their conception and the use of photography. Thus our study shows the diary’s importance in the life and the literary work of Annie Ernaux. The diaristic form is essential for her to trace her existence, guarantee her verity and accompany her writing projects.

JATS Blue Lite: Analysen zur Definition eines minimalen Konsens-Customizings der Journal Article Tag Suite

Reinhardt, Nina Linn 25 August 2021 (has links)

Henry Watterson, The Coincidental Redeemer

Zenick, Gerold 08 1900 (has links)
The major conclusion of this thesis is that Henry Watterson, while representative of the Redeemer element, was the product of a Jacksonian, rather than a Whig, heritage which had an ideology quite similar to the Redeemer appeal. In determining his exact philosophy the study shows that the editor was quite different from his contemporaries in the New South in both the substance and integrity of his beliefs.
