Kobayashi Hideo: The Long Journey Toward Homeland, 1902-1945Wada, James January 2006 (has links)
The famous Japanese critic, Kobayashi Hideo (1902–1983), passed through five broad stages up to 1945. In the first stage (1929–32), he sought to reinstate the claims of “the man,” the feeling, thinking human being, in writing, in place of the various literary dogmas adopted from the West: “Behind literature, see the man.” In the second stage, (1933–37), he attempted to define the “modern individual” in a Japanese society of change, anxiety and chaos, adopting the term the “socialized I” to explain his sense of a self integrated into society. In this period he sought a model in the West and found Dostoevsky. The impetus behind this stage can be summed up in the saying, “Behind the man, see society.” In Stage 3 (1938–39), Kobayashi concluded that the “silence” of Japanese people expressed a “wisdom” that accepted the “inevitable” or their “fate” in history. This stage can be summarized in the dictum “Behind society, see history.” Kobayashi’s key direction in stage four (1940–41) is “Behind history, see nature,” the latter term meaning nature (fused with humankind). In the fifth stage, from 1942 into the postwar period, Kobayashi adopted a Dostoevskian “harmony and serenity” in espousing a transcendence of the human realm, when the human organism in its greatest struggles sees the need for beauty in art. This stage can be summed up in the saying “Behind nature, see (that which inspires) beautiful literature.” The thesis charts these five stages with biographical material, some of it gleaned from interviews, and with analyses of Kobayashi’s works, as well as works by Dostoevsky, the alter-ego of Kobayashi from 1933–43. Kobayashi emerges as a figure who lived a complex series of intellectual and personal changes, in strong reaction to the revolutionary political and cultural transformations in prewar Japan. / PhD Doctorate

A proposta do presente trabalho consiste na tradução para o português do romance Kaniksen (O Navio-Fábrica Caranguejeiro, 1929) de Kobayashi Takij. Para chegar ao objetivo proposto, procedemos uma historização da vida e obra de Kobayashi Takiji, no sentido de compreendermos a trajetória literária do autor, seu envolvimento no movimento proletário e o contexto sócio-político em que o romance foi escrito. Visando introduzir O Navio-Fábrica Caranguejeiro ao leitor deste trabalho, são feitos alguns apontamentos sobre o romance: uma apresentação de seu tema e narrativa, um breve levantamento histórico de seu surgimento, suas repercussões no Japão e no mundo, e um levantamento e comentário crítico da obra. / The purpose of this work is the translation of the novel Kaniksen (The Crab Cannery Ship, 1929) by Kobayashi Takij into Portuguese. To reach the proposed objective, we made a historical research about the life and work of Kobayashi Takiji, to understand the literary trajectory of the author, his involvement in the proletarian movement and the socio-political context in which the novel was written. In order to introduce The Crab Cannery Ship the reader of this work, we are made some observations about the novel: a presentation of its theme and narrative, a brief historical research of its appearance, its impact on Japan and around the world, and a survey and critical commentary about the work.

We study isometric maps between Teichmüller spaces and bounded symmetric domains in their Kobayashi metric. We prove that every totally geodesic isometry from a disk to Teichmüller space is either holomorphic or anti-holomorphic; in particular, it is a Teichmüller disk. However, we prove that in dimensions two or more there are no holomorphic isometric immersions between Teichmüller spaces and bounded symmetric domains and also prove a similar result for isometric submersions. / Mathematics

We study the ∂-Neumann
operator and the Kobayashi metric. We observe that under certain
conditions, a higher-dimensional domain fibered over Ω can
inherit noncompactness of the d-bar-Neumann
operator from the base domain Ω. Thus we have a domain
which has noncompact d-bar-Neumann operator but
does not necessarily have the standard conditions which usually
are satisfied with noncompact d-bar-Neumann operator.
We define the property K which is related to the Kobayashi metric and gives
information about holomorphic structure of fat subdomains. We
find an equivalence between compactness of the d-bar-Neumann operator and the property K in any convex domain.
We also find a local property of the Kobayashi metric [Theorem IV.1], in
which the domain is not necessary pseudoconvex.
We find a more
general condition than finite type for the local regularity of the
d-bar-Neumann operator with the vector-field
method. By this generalization, it is possible for an analytic
disk to be on the part of boundary where we have local
regularity of the d-bar-Neumann operator. By Theorem V.2, we show that an isolated infinite-type point in the
boundary of the domain is not an obstruction for the local
regularity of the d-bar-Neumann operator.

National Identity, Ethnic Identity, Minoritiness...These are all categories which appear to have existed always already, categories which seem to be normative by nature. They are determinative, for they position human beings on different levels of the social ladder and organize strategically human interrelations. Yet, while these same apparently transcendental categories appropriate a position of universality, they also claim to be particular to a specific place, a specific people, a specific race etc. The disjunction inherent in these categories can be realized within this ideological contradiction. It is therefore this very disjunction that calls upon the rethinking of identity in relation to nation, ethnicity and minority. In this thesis I offer a translation of nine separate excerpts from Kobayashi Aya's account on Burakumin experience in Japan. The author's contemplation on Japaneseness and Minoritiness, her questioning of national identity as a category and of this category as predetermined become the focus of my work. While outlining the structure of Kobayashi's writing and the methods she chooses to employ, I analyze the concepts of performativity, repetition and disruption as potential options for rethinking Japaneseness and Minoritiness as categories of identity.

Dans ce travail, on étudie les espaces des modules dans le cadre de la géométrie hyperbolique complexe. L'espace des modules des variétés hyperboliques a été auparavant construit par Brody et Wright. On montre l'existence de l'espace des modules des espaces complexes hyperboliques, en considérant des déformations localement triviales et des déformations équisingulières et que ces dernières ne dépendent pas de la résolution choisie en utilisant le théorème de factorisation faible des applications birationelles entre variétés projectives. La construction utilise un critère de représentabilité des foncteurs analytiques par un espace de modules grossier, du à Schumacher et Kosarew-Okonek. Les deux ingrédients principaux de la construction sont l'existence d'une déformation semi-universelle et le théorème de stabilité sur les fibres proches de l'hyperbolicité à travers des morphismes propres. Enfin, en appliquant le même critère, on obtient l'espace des modules des variétés hyperboliquement plongées. Les objets des déformations sont des couples $(X,D)$ où $X$ est une variété compacte et $D$ un diviseur à croisement normaux dans $X$ tel que $X \setminus D$ soit hyperboliquement plongé dans $X$. Les déformations considérées ici sont les déformations logarithmiques.
