Mastering Vocabulary : - Teachers' views on vocabulary in written and spoken form

Abed El Rehman, Ziad, Al-Turaihi, Rim January 2024 (has links)
This study explores vocabulary assessment approaches and their alignment with curriculumgoals, alongside the influence of national tests on language education strategies. Throughinterviews with five teachers and relevant literature review, the research highlights thecomplexities inherent in language education. Emphasizing comprehension over rotememorization emerges as a consensus among teachers, echoing Schmitt and Diane'sperspective (1993). Criticisms of glossary exams underscore concerns about surface-levellearning and its impact on critical thinking. Aligning with Firda et al.'s (2021) study, teachersprioritize assessing fundamental language skills to enhance speaking, listening, reading, andwriting abilities. The study identifies a recurring theme of aligning teaching practices with theSwedish curriculum, emphasizing creativity, adaptability, and inclusivity. Teachers'approaches reflect the curriculum's call for thematic lessons and diverse languagedevelopment opportunities, balancing written and oral proficiency, while acknowledging theinfluence of national tests. Key words: ESL/EFL, primary school, vocabulary, vocabulary acquisition, vocabularylearning, vocabulary assessment, vocabulary test.

"Du är en duktig slav, va?" : Användning av HBTQIA+litteratur för att öka en känsla av tillhörighet i gymnasieskolan

Odeborg, Lukas January 2024 (has links)

Silva Musa, Cynthia January 2024 (has links)
This degree thesis explores the potential use of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's novel Half of a Yellow Sun as a tool in literature education to enhance students' understanding of complex themes such as war, identity, and cultural influence. Through a combination of in-depth analysis of the novel and integration of secondary literature and educational resources, the study highlights how various theoretical perspectives and reading strategies can improve students' comprehension and interpretation of the text. By focusing on the novel's exploration of characters' identity and meaning in turbulent times, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of literature's pedagogical potential and its ability to promote students' reflection and discussion on central topics. The conclusion drawn by this paper is that through the application of different theoretical perspectives and educational strategies such as reading strategies and critical literacy, literature education can contribute to a more rewarding learning environment for students as they become more engaged and involved in their learning.

”Hur kan man använda det på ett bra sätt?” : En studie om hur samhällskunskapslärare bedriver undervisning gällande källkritik och AI / ”How can you use it in a good way?” : A study on how teachers in civic studies teach about source criticism and AI

Holmberg, Daniel January 2024 (has links)
The study focuses on AI and source criticism and teachers' views and teaching in this. The teachers interviewed are teachers at junior high school but also high school in the subjects SO and civic studies. The purpose of the survey has been to account for and problematize civic studies teachers' approach to AI and its connection to source criticism. The teachers who were interviewed all have different experiences in the teaching profession, but they all are educated in civic studies at university. The teachers are working in the central parts of Sweden. The question that the study answers are:1. What is the teachers view of AI and how does it affect their teaching of source criticism? The teachers in the study agree on the importance of source criticism in teaching. They all teach about source criticism in their teaching, some a little more while others a little less. Time has been the biggest reason why source criticism has been given a little less space in some teachers' teaching. All the teachers in the study have changed their teaching because of AI. The teachers with more experience and more material have had to make a bigger change in their teaching, while the younger ones were already thrown into a world where AI was already active. One of the teachers testifies about how his teaching philosophy has taken a turn for the worse with AI as he cannot teach in the way he really wants.
