"Since the publication of the work of Jehu and Charlesworth the distribution and significance of the glacial deposits of the Irish Sea have remained in a somewhat confused condition." So said Professor W.D. Evans in 1964. This thesis represents an attempt to remove the confusion from one small corner of the Irish Sea basin; it is concentrated largely in North Pembrokeshire, and aims to resolve some of the stratigraphic and chronological problems concerned with the Pleistocene deposits of the region. There is a long history of research into the glaciation of North Pembrokeshire. Most of the early work was undertaken in Dewisland (the St. David's Peninsula), but in the major contributions of Jehu (1904) ond Charlesworth (1929) something was revealed of the Pleistocene history of North Pembrokeshire as a whole. Subsequent work has been greatly influenced by these two authors, and there has been no detailed field study of the area since Charlesworth. As a result, many controversies have arisen in recent years; these range from the purely stratigraphic problems of the classic tripartite drift succession and the nature of the Upper Boulder-clay to the absolute age of the Pembrokeshire drifts. Again, there is doubt concerning the number of glaciations represented in North Pembrokeshire; about the existence of the South Wales End-moraine, the pro-glacial lakes, and the so-called overflow channels of Charlesworth; and about the age and origins of the coastal features of the county. These are among the problems that this thesis attempts to answer.

O trabalho consiste na realização de um zoneamento geoambiental para a região de Piracicaba-SP, com base na análise de variáveis ambientais, principalmente de atributos do meio físico, tais como: geologia, solos, hidrologia, etc. A área estudada localiza-se na bacia hidrográfica do Rio Piracicaba, uma das mais importantes do estado de São Paulo e que vem apresentando intenso desenvolvimento econômico e consequentemente problemas de degradação ambiental. Este estudo foi realizado seguindo-se os pressupostos da cartografia geoambiental, mas utilizando-se também os procedimentos da cartografia geotécnica tradicional. Incorporou-se ainda ao estudo a utilização de um Sistema de Informações Geográficas (SIG) e do processamento digital de imagens de satélite, que permitiram maior agilidade e confiabilidade no levantamento, análise e tratamento das informações. Para a obtenção da carta de zoneamento geoambiental partiu-se da compartimentação do terreno em \"Landforms\", sendo que estas unidades homogêneas foram então caracterizadas e avaliadas quanto as suas principais aptidões e restrições. A carta obtida apresenta-se dividida em 16 unidades, descritas quanto a aptidões, restrições e conflitos de uso, principalmente em relação a aptidão agrícola, erosão, vulnerabilidade do aqüífero e disposição de rejeitos. / This work presents the geoenvironmental mapping of the Piracicaba (SP) region, based on the analysis of environmental attributes, such as: geology, soils and surface and ground waters. This region is located in the Piracicaba river basin, one of the more importance basins in the São Paulo state. It presents serious environmental degradation problems due to intense economic activities. This study has been based on the proposal of the geoenvironmental mapping, but using to the procedures of the traditional Engineering Geological Mapping. A Geographical Information System (IDRISI) and digital image processing were used to permit quickness and confidence on the collect, analysis and handling of the geological-geotechnical informations. The geoenvironmental zoning chart has been based on the terrain landforms division and the characterization of these homogeneous units that were evaluated with respect to the mainly aptitudes and constraints. The region was divided into 16 geoenvironmental units with their advantages and limitations analised in terms of agriculture aptitude, erosion susceptibility, aquifer vulnerability and waste disposal.

Neste trabalho são apresentados os resultados do mapeamento geotécnico da região adjacente ao sítio urbano de Casa Branca (SP). Foi aplicada a proposta metodológica de ZUQUETTE (1987), com ênfase na utilização da técnica de avaliação de terrenos (reconhecimento de landforms) conforme sistemática proposta por LOLLO (1996) e no estudo de perfis típicos de materiais inconsolidados. Foram elaborados os seguintes documentos cartográficos: MAPA DE DOCUMENTAÇÃO, MAPA DO SUBSTRATO ROCHOSO, MAPA DE MATERIAIS INCONSOLIDADOS, MAPA DE UNIDADES DE TERRENO, CARTA DE DECLIVIDADE e CARTA DE ZONEAMENTO GEOTÉCNICO GERAL. Dentre os documentos destaca-se a CARTA DE ZONEAMENTO GEOTÉCNICO GERAL que apresenta dados úteis para diversas finalidades e pode ser utilizada inclusive por pessoas não familiarizadas com a geotecnia. / This work presents the results of the engineering geological mapping procedures applied to the Casa Branca (SP) urban region. The method proposed by Zuquette (1982) was used, emphasizing the landform terrain evaluation proposed by Lollo (1996) and the research of typical unconsolidated profiles. The following cartographic maps were elaborated: DOCUMENTATION MAP; BEDROCK MAP; UNCONSOLIDATED MATERIALS MAP; LANDFORMS MAP; SLOPE CHART; ENGINEERING GEOLOGICAL ZONNING CHART. The ENGINEERING GEOLOGICAL ZONNING CHART presents valuable data for several uses, including professionals which are not used with geotechnical terms.
