Stretchable microneedle electrode array for stimulating and measuring intramuscular electromyographic activity

Guvanasen, Gareth Sacha 07 January 2016 (has links)
The advancement of technologies that interface with electrically excitable tissues, such as the cortex and muscle, has the potential to lend greater mobility to the disabled, and facilitate the study of the central and peripheral nervous systems. Myoelectric interfaces are currently limited in their signal fidelity, spatial resolution, and interfacial area. Such interfaces are either implanted in muscle or applied to the surface of the muscle or skin. Thus far, the former technology has been limited in its applications due to the stiffness (several orders of magnitude greater than muscle) of its substrates, such as silicon and polyimide, whereas the latter technology suffers from poor spatial resolution and signal quality due to the physical separation between the electrodes and the signal source. We have developed a stretchable microneedle electrode array (sMEA) that can function while stretching and flexing with muscle tissue, thereby enabling multi-site muscle stimulation and electromyography (EMG) measurement across a large interfacial area. The scope of this research encompassed: (i) the development of a stretchable and flexible array of penetrating electrodes for the purposes of stimulating and measuring the electrical activity of excitable tissue, (ii) the characterization of the electrical, mechanical, and biocompatibility properties of this electrode array, (iii) the measurement of regional electrical activity of muscle via the electrode array, (iv) the study of the effect of spatially distributed stimulation of muscle on the fatigue and ripple of muscle contractions, and (v) the assessment of the extent to which the stretch response of electrically stimulated muscle behaves in a physiological manner.

Wachstum und Charakterisierung von großflächigem Graphen

Troppenz, Gerald Volkmar 10 June 2014 (has links)
The growth of macroscopic single-layer graphene and its implementation in large-area electronic devices is of major interest. Large area graphene is grown by an optimized CVD-process on polycrystalline copper foil and transferred to suitable substrates by a self-developed transfer process. Transmission-spectroscopic investigations indicate that the manufactured graphene exhibits almost constant transmission of 97.6 % between 450-800 nm. NEXAFS-, XPS-, as well as Raman experiments were conducted to demonstrate the low defect density in the sp2 hybrid structure of the manufactured graphene. Large internal biaxial compressive strain is introduced in graphene due to the thermal expansion mismatch between graphene and copper. The mechanism of the stepwise strain relaxation is fully revealed by AFM and Raman measurement techniques. The remaining strain in the material is thoroughly quantified. Interestingly, the first step of the strain relaxation process results in a pronounced ripple structure on the Cu substrate and in graphene wrinkle formation. Removing graphene from the Cu substrate and transferring it to SiO2 results in a shift of the 2D phonon mode by 27cm-1 to lower frequencies. Hall effect measurements of an 8x8mm2 graphene layer on corning eagle borosilicate glass exhibit a charge carrier mobility of 2070 cm2 V-1 s-1 at hole concentrations of 3.6E12 cm-2, respectively. Expectations for further applications in liquid phase crystallized superstrate thin film solar cells are raised by the retention of the basic structure of graphene after burial under crystalline Si.

Guillemot, Lucas 24 September 2009 (has links) (PDF)

Design of NMOS and CMOS Thin Film Transistors and Application to Electronic Textiles

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: The field of flexible displays and electronics gained a big momentum within the recent years due to their ruggedness, thinness, and flexibility as well as low cost large area manufacturability. Amorphous silicon has been the dominant material used in the thin film transistor industry which could only utilize it as N type thin film transistors (TFT). Amorphous silicon is an unstable material for low temperature manufacturing process and having only one kind of transistor means high power consumption for circuit operations. This thesis covers the three major researches done on flexible TFTs and flexible electronic circuits. First the characterization of both amorphous silicon TFTs and newly emerging mixed oxide TFTs were performed and the stability of these two materials is compared. During the research, both TFTs were stress tested under various biasing conditions and the threshold voltage was extracted to observe the shift in the threshold which shows the degradation of the material. Secondly, the design of the first flexible CMOS TFTs and CMOS gates were covered. The circuits were built using both inorganic and organic components (for nMOS and pMOS transistors respectively) and functionality tests were performed on basic gates like inverter, NAND and NOR gates and the working results are documented. Thirdly, a novel large area sensor structure is demonstrated under the Electronic Textile project section. This project is based on the concept that all the flexible electronics are flexible in only one direction and can not be used for conforming irregular shaped objects or create an electronic cloth for various applications like display or sensing. A laser detector sensor array is designed for proof of concept and is laid in strips that can be cut after manufacturing and weaved to each other to create a real flexible electronic textile. The circuit designed uses a unique architecture that pushes the data in a single line and reads the data from the same line and compares the signal to the original state to determine a sensor excitation. This architecture enables 2 dimensional addressing through an external controller while eliminating the need for 2 dimensional active matrix style electrical connections between the fibers. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Electrical Engineering 2012

Radiation Detection and Imaging: Neutrons and Electric Fields

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: The work presented in this manuscript has the overarching theme of radiation. The two forms of radiation of interest are neutrons, i.e. nuclear, and electric fields. The ability to detect such forms of radiation have significant security implications that could also be extended to very practical industrial applications. The goal is therefore to detect, and even image, such radiation sources. The method to do so revolved around the concept of building large-area sensor arrays. By covering a large area, we can increase the probability of detection and gather more data to build a more complete and clearer view of the environment. Large-area circuitry can be achieved cost-effectively by leveraging the thin-film transistor process of the display industry. With production of displays increasing with the explosion of mobile devices and continued growth in sales of flat panel monitors and television, the cost to build a unit continues to decrease. Using a thin-film process also allows for flexible electronics, which could be taken advantage of in-house at the Flexible Electronics and Display Center. Flexible electronics implies new form factors and applications that would not otherwise be possible with their single crystal counterparts. To be able to effectively use thin-film technology, novel ways of overcoming the drawbacks of the thin-film process, namely the lower performance scale. The two deliverable devices that underwent development are a preamplifier used in an active pixel sensor for neutron detection and a passive electric field imaging array. This thesis will cover the theory and process behind realizing these devices. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Electrical Engineering 2015

Reducing Inherent Deviations in Galvanometer Scanning Systems for Large Area Processing

Ortega Delgado, Moisés Alberto 26 January 2017 (has links) (PDF)
Galvanometer laser machining is a well-established laser machining technique in which the laser beam is positioned on a working field by means of mirrors mounted in galvanometers. Nonetheless, new applications make necessary the development of innovative techniques for increasing the performance of such systems. Aside all the advantages of this technique like given resolution, repeatability and velocity, a limited working area is an important drawback. In this thesis work, the limitations of different state-of-the-art schemes for increasing the working field of galvanometer laser machining systems are examined. The necessity of a new strategy for reducing present deviations introducing a vision system is established. The construction of an error vector and calculation of coordinate’s transformations to improve precision are presented. In this work, the “Arithmetic mean transformation”, “individual correction transformation”, “iterative inverse distance weighting transformation” and a stitching approach denominated “Auto-stitching” are presented and demonstrated as methods for reducing inherent deviations in galvanometer scanning systems for large area processing.

Predicting Electrochromic Smart Window Performance

Degerman Engfeldt, Johnny January 2012 (has links)
The building sector is one of the largest consumers of energy, where the cooling of buildings accounts for a large portion of the total energy consumption. Electrochromic (EC) smart windows have a great potential for increasing indoor comfort and saving large amounts of energy for buildings. An EC device can be viewed as a thin-film electrical battery whose charging state is manifested in optical absorption, i.e. the optical absorption increases with increased state-of-charge (SOC) and decreases with decreased state-of-charge. It is the EC technology's unique ability to control the absorption (transmittance) of solar energy and visible light in windows with small energy effort that can reduce buildings' cooling needs. Today, the EC technology is used to produce small windows and car rearview mirrors, and to reach the construction market it is crucial to be able to produce large area EC devices with satisfactory performance. A challenge with up-scaling is to design the EC device system with a rapid and uniform coloration (charging) and bleaching (discharging). In addition, up-scaling the EC technology is a large economic risk due to its expensive production equipment, thus making the choice of EC material and system extremely critical. Although this is a well-known issue, little work has been done to address and solve these problems. This thesis introduces a cost-efficient methodology, validated with experimental data, capable of predicting and optimizing EC device systems' performance in large area applications, such as EC smart windows. This methodology consists of an experimental set-up, experimental procedures and a twodimensional current distribution model. The experimental set-up, based on camera vision, is used in performing experimental procedures to develop and validate the model and methodology. The two-dimensional current distribution model takes secondary current distribution with charge transfer resistance, ohmic and time-dependent effects into account. Model simulations are done by numerically solving the model's differential equations using a finite element method. The methodology is validated with large area experiments. To show the advantage of using a well-functioning current distribution model as a design tool, some EC window size coloration and bleaching predictions are also included. These predictions show that the transparent conductor resistance greatly affects the performance of EC smart windows.

Evaluation of quantification methods for inclusion distribution in clean steel / Utvärdering av kvantifieringsmetoder för inneslutningsfördelning i rena stål

Fröjd, Felicia January 2019 (has links)
Ovako products are in many cases used in high fatigue applications. Currently Ovako use ultrasonic evaluation at 10 MHz as a volumetric method for inclusion control. This study intends to investigate two new methods for quantification of micro inclusions. The aim of this study is to develop a method for large area scanning by creating a polishing method that allows you to polish away a specified amount of material, in this case 60 μm. This method will be used to capture the true distribution of critically sized non-metallic inclusions by creating a 3D image out of several 2D scans from the light optical microscope. These results will be compared to the results of high frequency ultrasonic testing at 125 MHz to get a quantitative idea of what can be captured by the high frequency ultrasonic investigation. Two different steel grades were studied, named Grade A and Grade B, with one sample of each. Both grades have similar composition, except that Grade B contains more sulphur. Both grades are of approximately the same hardness. The two steel samples were scanned with a scanning acoustic microscope at the same time as a method to polish away 60 μm was developed. After this, the method was used to scan several layers with an image recognition program in the light optical microscope. The results from both methods were then compared. After testing, it was concluded that the inclusion distribution pattern was completely different for the two steel grades, however the same pattern could be seen for each grade in the LOM and in the ultrasonic. This indicates that the same types of inclusions could be found. It was also found that the ultrasonic enlarges the indications by a severe amount making it hard to take any measurements directly from the ultrasonic images in this study. What is possible to see in the ultrasonic images are the distribution of inclusions and the inclusion placement in the sample. A result of 10 % matching inclusions between both methods is found, which is to say that the same 50 inclusions out of the 500 largest indications from each method in the steel sample is found. These 10 % is however not sufficient enough to conclude by how much the ultrasonic enlarges the indications compared to the light optical microscope.
