The space elevator has been proposed as an alternate method for launching cargo into space. However, the construction of such a structure requires a material much stronger than any currently in existence. Instead, a partial elevator is considered for satellite placement. In the first part of the thesis, the fundamentals of very long tethered systems are studied. From static analysis on a simple two-body system, it is demonstrated that an assumption made in the conventional analysis does not apply to very long tethered systems. For a uniform tether, the axial stress distribution is obtained. Following the Lagrangian approach, the equations of motion governing the planar librations of a multi-body tethered system are derived. From a linearization of these equations, the libration frequencies are found. Then, by solving the nonlinear equations numerically, the responses to various changes in the system parameters are determined. In the second part of the thesis, the use of a partial elevator in satellite placement is studied. In the case of single climber transit, residual librations occur, which alter the shape and size of the orbit of a satellite launched from the climber. An approach using two climbers is investigated in order to decrease the residual libration and thereby reduce orbit placement errors. Also, some energy calculations are done to determine whether the partial elevator offers significant advantages.

referred as the Golden Age for High Technology and during this time the industry grew with a rapid speed. As a result, the consumers were presented with a various number of innovative products such as the Internet, computers and mobile phones. Within the High Tech frame, one of the fastest growing industries is the mobile phone handset industry. In 2006, 800,2 million mobile phones were sold worldwide and the market value was $104,3 billion. Forecasts about the mobile phone market predicts that the market will grow to 1,8 billion units in 2011 and have a value of $211,9 billion.   However, during this time, the researcher, Geoffrey Moore, identified a problem for the High Tech companies, i.e. the chasm. The chasm is a gap between the early market and the mainstream market that has arisen due to the characteristics of the high tech industry and the differences between these two groups. Due to the fact, that the early market only represents 10-15% of the total market it is vital for companies to cross the chasm and reach the mainstream market, in order to cover the high initial R&amp;D costs.   Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to conduct a qualitative study within the Swedish mobile phone industry to understand how the manufacturers’ products are crossing the chasm.   The research has been carried out as a case study, and two of the largest mobile phone manufacturers were used as cases, Sony Ericsson and LG Electronics. The data collection was of qualitative nature and four respondents were chosen to be interviewed.   In the Swedish mobile phone industry, the researchers have identified two types of products; class products and innovation product, which have been identified, defined and named by the researchers themselves. Class products are defined as “mobile phones with no significant innovation value for the consumers”, whereas innovation products are defined as “mobile phones with high innovation value”. The main difference is that class products will never attract the interest of the early market and therefore they are usually launched directly to the mainstream market, ignoring the chasm. Factors such as incremental changes, development of IT, changes in how to market new technologies and overlapping groups in the life cycle has narrowed down the chasm in the industry for innovation products. The most important strategy in order to reach the mainstream market is partnerships and alliances and it is impossible for a manufacturer to survive on their own.

referred as the Golden Age for High Technology and during this time the industry grew with a rapid speed. As a result, the consumers were presented with a various number of innovative products such as the Internet, computers and mobile phones. Within the High Tech frame, one of the fastest growing industries is the mobile phone handset industry. In 2006, 800,2 million mobile phones were sold worldwide and the market value was $104,3 billion. Forecasts about the mobile phone market predicts that the market will grow to 1,8 billion units in 2011 and have a value of $211,9 billion.</p><p> </p><p>However, during this time, the researcher, Geoffrey Moore, identified a problem for the High Tech companies, i.e. the chasm. The chasm is a gap between the early market and the mainstream market that has arisen due to the characteristics of the high tech industry and the differences between these two groups. Due to the fact, that the early market only represents 10-15% of the total market it is vital for companies to cross the chasm and reach the mainstream market, in order to cover the high initial R&D costs.</p><p> </p><p>Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to conduct a qualitative study within the Swedish mobile phone industry to understand how the manufacturers’ products are crossing the chasm.</p><p> </p><p>The research has been carried out as a case study, and two of the largest mobile phone manufacturers were used as cases, Sony Ericsson and LG Electronics. The data collection was of qualitative nature and four respondents were chosen to be interviewed.</p><p> </p><p>In the Swedish mobile phone industry, the researchers have identified two types of products; class products and innovation product, which have been identified, defined and named by the researchers themselves. Class products are defined as “mobile phones with no significant innovation value for the consumers”, whereas innovation products are defined as “mobile phones with high innovation value”. The main difference is that class products will never attract the interest of the early market and therefore they are usually launched directly to the mainstream market, ignoring the chasm. Factors such as incremental changes, development of IT, changes in how to market new technologies and overlapping groups in the life cycle has narrowed down the chasm in the industry for innovation products. The most important strategy in order to reach the mainstream market is partnerships and alliances and it is impossible for a manufacturer to survive on their own.</p><p> </p>

Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / NPSAT1 will be launched as a secondary payload on the Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle (EELV) Atlas V. The Atlas V will provide a medium lift capability in the EELV class of launch vehicles. NPSAT1 will be mated to the Atlas V using the EELV Secondary Payload Adapter (ESPA). The design and operations of NPSAT1 will require that the space vehicle pose no hazards to ground support equipment, personnel, the launch vehicle, or other payloads. Potential hazards include structural failure, inadvertent deployment of antennas or other mechanisms, inadvertent radio frequency emissions, and other hazards. The scope of this thesis is to assess the safety risks associated with NPSAT1 for all activities occurring at the launch site through orbit insertion. This includes ground testing at the integration site, as well as in-flight operations prior to and shortly after separation from the launch vehicle. All hazards associated with NPSAT1 are to be enumerated and assessed for criticality. Electromagnetic launchers are currently being developed for their use as military weapons. These devices launch a projectile to extremely high speeds using very large electric currents. One obstacle facing the development of electromagnetic launchers is damage to the rails and armature during launch. The damage occurs due to current arcing in the armature-rail interface and is denoted as a transition. One solution is to use a lubricant injection system contained inside the armature to provide a conductive lubricant to the interface. The lubricant will ensure good electrical contact, prevent solid-solid contact, and cool the interface to prevent a launch from transitioning. Various different armature designs are currently under development. Each design must be analyzed through armature-rail interface modeling in order to predict the physical behavior and identify causes of transitions. There have been many studies on the physical behavior of sliding contacts. Some of which are directly applied to electromagnetic launch. In particular the magneto-elastothermohydrodynamic model is the most comprehensive model found for use in simulating electromagnetic launch. It includes calculation of the electromagnetic field, elastic deformation of the armature, calculation of the armature temperature history, and a hydrodynamic study of the lubricant both in the injection system and the armature-rail interface. The magneto-elastothermohydrodynamic model has been applied to only one armature design with limited success due to the assumptions used. The magneto-elastothermohydrodynamic model is applied to six different armature designs each requiring modifications to be made in order to predict the distinct behavior of each launcher. Modifications to the model include consideration of turbulent flow in the injection conduit, unique injection configurations, dry-out of the armature-rail interface, two dimensional pressure fields, and analyses of cylindrical bore launcher designs. The results show the model is effective in predicting when a transition will occur and what physical event leads to a transition when compared to experimental launch data. Additionally, experimental observations are used to affirm the simulation of other physical characteristics. It is found by the simulation that the base case armature is successful in preventing a transition of the shot, which is consistent with the experimental results. The simulation of NRL shot 223 reveals that such a small amount of lubricant is supplied by the reservoirs that the armature-rail interface partially dries out making a transition likely at a time of 4.7 ms; agreeing with the experimentally observed transition at a time of 4.5 ms. It is determined that the transition of NRL shot 406 is not due to a lack of lubricant inside the interface and that the amount of lubricant which leaks from the joint is negligible. IAP shot 7 did not transition in the experiment, however, after a time of about 3.5 ms the muzzle voltage began to rise. The simulation presents a possible explanation, showing that the armature-rail interface is beginning to empty out after 4.2 ms. The simulation of the GTL-2-4C armature shows that the experimentally observed transition is caused by the reservoirs emptying out at about 2.1 ms. The exploratory simulation of a modified GTL-2-4C armature determines that the absence of the slit in the armature trailing edges will not prevent the transition nor extend the successful portion of the shot.
