A study of the role of the elementary school principal in schools with differentiated staffing

Capelluti, Joseph Hincks 02 June 2010 (has links)
This study was based on the assumption there would be no significant differences between the perceptions teachers and principals have of the principal's role in a differentiated staff. After extensive review of the literature, four major role tasks were identified as necessary for the principal to perform, if the concept was to be successfully implemented. A key component to success is the principal's ability and willingness to allow teachers and other personnel to become involved in the decision-making process. The principal should encourage the participation of staff and students in the development of school programs and policies, stress shared decision-making and emphasize administrative interaction with staff and students. / Ph. Shared Leadership in Chamber Music Ensembles: A Preliminary Study Borrowing from Sports Psychology

Kleyn, Mark January 2016 (has links)
Connections between athletes and musicians have been drawn recently by scholars, sports psychologists, and musicians. Literature on these connections, however, has focused on individuals rather than exploring connections between teams and ensembles. The broad goal of our study was to determine whether leadership roles like those observed in sports research emerge in chamber music ensembles. We chose to focus on connecting the literatures of leadership in sports and music by using a questionnaire drawn from sports research (Fransen, et al., 2014) in a chamber music setting. Fransen’s model was designed to measure the emergence of four leadership roles (Task, Social, Motivational, and External) in teams. In our study, fifty local musicians responded to an online questionnaire derived from Fransen (2014). We found that all four of Fransen’s leadership roles were identified by respondents as present in chamber ensembles. Respondents were also asked to describe leadership roles in their ensemble that did not fit Fransen’s four leadership roles, where such existed. From their responses, we postulate the roles of “organizational leader” and “leader by example” in chamber ensembles. We interpreted the organizational leader to be an extension of Fransen’s “external leadership” role. We interpret he leader by example role to be a set of attributes as predictors of shared leadership in individuals, rather than as a separate leadership role. In light of our findings, we offer suggestions for improving the functioning of chamber ensembles and for future research in this topic.

Arbetsledarrollen : påverkan av bristande praktisk erfarenhet hos nyexaminerad byggnadsingenjör. / The Supervisor Role : impact of lacking practical experience of the newly qualified civil engineer.

Lund, Sofia, Selle, Felicia January 2016 (has links)
Purpose: The construction industry is facing changes as academic education is becoming more common. Practical competence will be lost as newly graduated civil engineers often lack practical experience. As the industry is characterized by a clear identification and where a common view is that "you ought to have experience from construction work", this change is problematic. This study focuses on the supervisors role, where the aim of the report is to analyze how newly graduated civil engineers handle the lack of practical experience. Method: In order to achieve the objective of the study, the supervisor role has been studied at two large construction companies. To get a deep and fair view of the role, site managers and construction workers, together with supervisors with both practical experience and theoretical background have been studied. The nature of the study is qualitative where empirical data has been collected through interviews, observation, and analysis of internal company documents. Findings: The analysis is that the supervisors’ role is characterized by a certain number of tasks and operations. From these, connections can be made to how management should be handled, and the characteristics required in such operations. The last part includes collective identification within the industry and its pressure on the role. From these aspects the result is summarized. The affect is that newly graduated civil engineers require a more analytical and information seeking mindset when lacking practical experience. Implications: The conclusion of this study is that practical experience is an advantage in the role of supervisor, and that it is important to give the chance for supervisors to gain practical experience. In compensation for the lack of practical experience of newly graduated civil engineers, they instead have an analytical and information- seeking mindset. They also possess basic knowledge of the complete building process. The characteristics that are more important to focus on than experience are: having commitment, clarity in communication, clear structure and sense of initiative. The critical factors for leading the construction production is to disseminate information, take initiative, react to unexpected crises and allocate resources. Limitations: The study focuses on the role of supervisor at two major construction companies. If the study had also included smaller construction companies, a wider and more general conclusion of the role at large, could have been made. The study would be improved if more observations were possible to implement. To also observe the role from different occupational groups, other aspects and a wider analysis would have been possible to conduct. Keywords: Supervisor’s role in construction industry, Mintzberg's leadership roles, first-line manager, practical experience/academic education, collective identity. Nyckelord: Arbetsledarrollen i byggbranschen, Mintzbergs ledarroller, första linjens chef, praktisk erfarenhet/akademisk utbildning, kollektiv identitet.

Pipelines to Leadership: Aspirations of Faculty in the Community College Kentucky Community and Technical College System

Tipton, Erin C. 01 January 2016 (has links)
Community colleges are challenged to find their next set of leaders who can respond to the diverse challenges of leading the institution. This study examined the impact of institutional and personal factors on faculty aspirations to leadership roles within the community college through the utilization of the Social Cognitive Career Theory framework. A case study research design utilizing mixed-methods investigated the perceived and preferred organizational culture(s) and the manner in which institutional and personal factors influence faculty aspirations to assume leadership roles at Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College. The findings of the research indicate that affecting change and being asked to lead are personal factors of influence that motivate faculty to aspire to formal leadership positions within the community college. On the other hand, the challenge of formal leadership roles, family and work-life balance might dissuade faculty aspirations of faculty to formal leadership roles. The study reveals that organizational culture was a positive factor of institutional influence. This study advances the field of educational leadership in that a number of personal and institutional factors influence the aspirations of faculty as they consider movement into formal leadership position within the community college. The findings identify the need for research across multiple institutions and the need to expand Social Cognitive Career Theory to include personal-cognitive barriers of race and gender.

New leadership & ICT : The impact of technology on leadership practices amongst middle managers

Granlund, Frida, Mellström, Julia January 2019 (has links)
Thesis Purpose: The study aimed to explore how the use of ICT has influenced the leadership role and thus also in what ways this has been helping the practice of the role among middle managers. The study was exploratory as an attempt to understand how the leadership role has been influenced in the new digital era. Theoretical Perspective: Previous literature has been examined where different concepts have been chosen in reference to the study. ICT, its connection to leadership and the composition of the managerial role has been presented in this thesis. Methodology: A qualitative method has been used for this case study with the aim to gain an understanding of the studied area. Collected data was analyzed using an abductive approach which involved back-and-forth engagement with theory and empirical findings.  Empirical study: For this qualitative study, semi-structured interviews was made with four middle managers, all positioned at the case company.  Conclusion: The leadership role was found to be both facilitated and made more difficult due to the use of ICT. Communication as a part of the informational roles among leaders has been facilitated the most. The facilitation of the roles was also found to depend on the technological skills among middle managers and the organisational structure.

Leadership perspectives on service delivery in the South African Public Service : a critical overview of the public financial management systems from 1994 to 2004

Mabala, Matshidiso John 30 July 2008 (has links)
This research focuses on the effectiveness of the leadership roles played by political leaders in guiding the implementation of government processes to attain the required objectives and goals. The Constitution vests the National Assembly and provincial legislatures with the power to exercise oversight of their respective executives in addition to their legislative and other powers. In order to facilitate Parliament’s oversight of the national executive organs of state, section 92(3)(b) of the Constitution requires of members of the Cabinet to provide Parliament with full and regular reports concerning matters under their control. Parliament and the legislatures have a critical role to play in overseeing effective performance by organs of state. Political leadership, through Parliament, ensures that the objectives of the state are always at the forefront of any activities that government departments and public entities engage in. The delivery of services by the government and the reporting of any achievements are also crucial and ensure that citizens know what services the government is delivering. The challenge facing the government is whether the delivery of services is effectively done and whether people for whom the services are intended do actually benefit from them. This calls for an effective monitoring and evaluation mechanism to determine whether the objectives of the government have indeed been met. Before the monitoring process can commence, effective financial management and reporting systems should be put in place to ensure that the delivery of essential services can be correctly accounted for. The South African Government has developed a financial management policy, the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), No. 1 of 1999, the implementation of which is aimed at ensuring effective financial management processes that will help safeguard public resources. Through the oversight process of Parliament, the politicians are able to oversee the government functions being performed by government departments and public entities through the process of analysing these reports as and when they receive them. In the exercising of its oversight function, Parliament has been successful in some areas and unsuccessful in others as identified in this report. It is the aim of this report to identify those areas that have not produced good results and to make recommendations on how to deal with these areas in order to produce better results. / Thesis (DPhil)--University of Pretoria, 2006. / School of Public Management and Administration (SPMA) / unrestricted

Leadership Roles and Misalignment in the Workplace : A quantitative approach to analyzing employee engagement from a follower perspective.

Wiklund, Daniel, Stensson, Jesper January 2023 (has links)
Title: Leadership Roles and Their Misalignment in the Workplace - A quantitative approach to analyzing employee engagement from a follower perspective. Leadership is a concept that has been studied for centuries and there are multiple theories, concepts, and understandings on the subject. For this study, the focus has been to examine and understand the association of different levels of employee engagement (cognitive, physical, and emotional) in the theoretical framework of the five ”p’s” by Alvesson et al. (2017). This research is aimed to find out what the most preferred leadership role and employee need is to later analyze and find out if the different levels of employee engagement have a positive correlation. In this study, we found that there are clear correlations and there is a positive corelations on the preferred leadership role identified and employee engagement. We also established that there were clear preferences for leadership roles and traits the followers deemed more important than others. Lastly, we also found no significant relationship between the most important needs of the participants in this study on their work engagement.

Voices of the Earth: A Phenomenological Study of Women in the Nation of Gods and Earths

Keiler-Bradshaw, Ahmon J. 26 April 2010 (has links)
Historically, Black women have often been excluded from the discussion on leadership. This thesis argues that the leadership roles of the women in the Nation of Gods and Earths are consis-tent with the concepts of both Africana womanism and Black women’s leadership. However, through an analysis of Earth’s oral testimonies, this research concludes that though racism is the most pervading obstacle faced by Black people, The Nation of Gods and Earths must address and reevaluate the sexism that exists within its doctrine and practice. By doing so, the group can be-gin to recognize Black women’s leadership and utilize it more effectively. The Nation should collectively transform its gender inequality, in a way that does not compromise its culture, as a means of successfully sustaining and strengthening itself and the communities of which it serves.

Self efficacy of African American Women in Leadership Roles

Williams, Varil Deloise 01 January 2015 (has links)
Little research has focused on developing female African American leaders. A mixed methods study examined the influence of conservation of resources (COR) and locus of control (LOC) on the self-efficacy (SE) of 26 female African American leaders. It also explored the role of mentoring and spirituality in leadership development for a subset of 5 participants. Data were obtained using a demographic questionnaire, the General SE Scale, the COR Evaluation Gain scale, and the LOC Assessment, along with transcribed responses to mentoring and spirituality interview questions. Pearson correlations run between age, education, and income, as well as COR, LOC, and SE scores uncovered an inverse relationship between education and LOC and no other significant associations. A multiple regression analysis determined that COR and LOC did not predict SE among the participants. A qualitative analysis of the coded interview responses by a subset of 5 participants to 10 questions on mentoring and spirituality yielded 5 thematic clusters: (a) mentor link: expertise for guiding mentoring relationship or being a positive role model, (b) mentor value: commitment to personal or professional development, (c) mentor characteristics: qualities of being a good mentor, (d) mentor outcomes: expertise in mentoring and supporting an individual in development, and (e) workplace spirituality: individual desire to live spiritual values in the workplace. The results will foster positive social change by identifying ways to promote the development of female African American leaders.
