Is concept mapping an effective tool for evaluation of student learning in science?

Foster, Linda Jean 01 January 2001 (has links)
Concept mapping is a metacognitive learning strategy which often improves a learner's ability to construct new knowledge. This action research project was intended to determine the level of effectiveness of concept mapping as a student learning intervention. Students in two high school science classes constructed concept maps before and after instruction during a unit of study about volcanoes. The maps were analyzed for increases in complexity and indications of learning. The concept maps were then compared for differences by groups based on volcano unit test scores. Based on the analysis of the matched pairs of concept maps, those maps which contained a higher amount of prior knowledge of the subject matter were associated with maps which showed greatest amount of increase in knowledge after instruction. These results are supported by the many researchers who contend that the most important factor in learning new information and gaining new knowledge is the amount of prior knowledge a learner brings into the learning situation. The results of this action research project will be applied to the development of future science courses by this researcher.

Vlha, Radovan January 2013 (has links)
Title: The Origins of Education in Great Moravia and its Subsequent Manifestations Author: Mgr. Radovan Vlha Department: Czech Language Department Supervisor: prof. PhDr. Radoslava Kvapilová Brabcová, CSc. Abstract The thesis focuses on the origins and manifestations of the education on the territory of Great Moravia. The main research method is the analysis of historical source texts, archaeological artefacts and analogical comparison with the situation in 9th century Europe. The growth of education in Great Moravia commenced with the arrival of Constantine and Methodius mission, which proceed from the Byzantine conception of education. The mission picked up the threads of Bavarian missionaries' work, which is proved by the widely professed Christianity prior to the year 863. Initially, the education centres of western missionaries were used with new premises being built later; Sady near Uherske Hradiste being considered the most important. Scholars with aristocratic backgrounds were educated in these centres. The curriculum consisted predominantly from Old Church Slavonic, prayers, theology and music, sometimes accompanied with Latin. The development of the craft industry requisite for the building of churches, decorating jewellery with Christian motives and production of books was directly connected to...

Distanční výuka u žáků se specifickými vzdělávacími potřebami / Distance learning at the pupils with learning disabilities

Klímová, Tereza January 2022 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with the education of pupils with specific learning disabilities. The theoretical part deals with the definitions of specific learning disabilities, the needs of students and the possibilities of re-education of individual disorders. There are defined degrees and types of support, legislation that regulates the education of students with special needs, but also other opportunities for their education. The practical part deals with case studies or observations of students with SPU, then a questionnaire survey, which seeks to answer the question of how teachers worked with students with SPU at the time of distance learning, whether they succeeded educational goals and also with what difficulties pupils struggled. The questionnaire survey is supplemented by structured interviews with teachers who participated in the education of students during distance learning.

Celoživotní učení romských žen / The Lifelong Learning of Roma Women

Horváthová, Martina January 2022 (has links)
The work presents Romani women as one of the disadvantaged groups for whom, according to transnational organizations, lifelong learning should be an opportunity to improve employability and improve social position in society. Today's society is working to make primary, secondary and terciary education accessible to disadvantaged children and youth, and adult education should also be prepared for diverse groups of learners. Inclusive education should respect the specific needs of its target group. The diploma thesis, based on fifteen years of experience in the education of Roma women, available data and knowledge gained through quantitative and qualitative research, specifies the perceived educational needs and expectations of this specific disadvantaged group in relation to further education. The thesis describes the intersectionality with which Romani women cope in life, and which must be perceived as the background and cause of the barriers they face in accessing further education. The last chapter outlines appropriate methods of making further education accessible to adult Romani women. Findings captured at work can also be related to other groups on the margins of society and at risk in the labor market. Key words: Roma, women, lifelong learning, further education, education, inclusion in...

Construção do conhecimento em um curso a distância : a tomada de consciência do tutor de sede

Severo, Denise January 2010 (has links)
This thesis examines the perspective of headquarters’ tutors on the impact of their interventions on knowledge building of students-teachers in a distance learning course on pedagogy. The research methodology was inspired by Piagetian clinical method and Genetic Epistemology was adopted as theoretical framework. Data collection was developed at two different times. Initially, an interview was conducted through MSN, guided by a script with seven questions. Secondly, a survey containing three questions was sent to participants via email. The interview addresses issues on knowledge building, evaluation and the role of tutor. The survey explores the idea of interventions and the relationship between these and knowledge building of students-teachers. Data collected were analyzed from the following topics: knowledge building, evaluation as a privileged moment of learning and the impact of tutors’ interventions. The tutor contribution in the students-teachers PEAD learning was analyzed based on their construction knowledge notions, the evaluation as a learning moment and the impact of their interventions. It was possible verify that the tutors understand that their performance is directly related to the students-teachers construction knowledge.

Integrating Sustainability Into Early Childhood Education Through In-service Training: An Effort Towards Transformative Learning

Feriver Gezer, Sebnem 01 December 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this study is twofold, first is to create an in-service training example that can be conducted with childhood education teachers in framework of transformative learning towards learning for sustainability and education for sustainable development. Second aim of study is to investigate effects and contributors of created transformative learning example on participants&rsquo / perspective transformation. 24 teachers were involved as convenient sample in this research. Research methodology combined two basic data gathering and analysis methods. Sample group participated in seven half day in-service training, at the end of training initial inquiry was conducted by using Learning Activities Survey with all participants and it was continued with 6 follow-up interviews. Assessment tool and interview format were developed by Kathleen P. King (1997) and were translated in Turkish and adapted for the use of this research. The results of this research revealed that 100% of participants experienced perspective transformation at varying degrees in relation to in-service training conducted. The most telling findings indicate that: (a) perspective transformation learning experiences include major shifts in learner&rsquo / s understanding of his/her life and world, (b) journey of transformative learning differs among learners, (c) sampled population experienced some changes in their perspective of their beliefs, assumptions and points of view as well as they transitioned to a more differentiated frame of reference which is related with sustainability, (d) both classroom assignments and support were noted as important contributors of perspective transformation, (e) discussions, group projects, critical thinking activities, self-evaluation of participants and unconventional structure of training, support of trainer, support from others and challenge from trainer were evaluated as main contributors to perspective transformation.
