Conference proceeding from the Living the Future 6 Conference, April 5-8, 2006, University of Arizona Libraries, Tucson, AZ. / The Association of Research Libraries sponsored program "Making Library Assessment Work" is a two year effort to evaluate assessment efforts in ARL Libraries. Led by Visiting Program Officers Steve Hiller (University of Washington Libraries) and Jim Self (University of Virginia Library) and under the aegis of the Director of the ARL Statistics and Measurement Program, Martha Kyrillidou, twenty-five ARL libraries are participating. Each library does a "self study" of their assessment efforts and needs which is followed by a 2 day site visit and a report containing recommendations and suggestions for an effective, sustainable and practical assessment program. One of the more interesting findings from the 12 libraries visited in 2005 was the relationship of organizational culture(s) and structure to effective library assessment. Each library had a distinctive culture (or cultures) that exerted a powerful influence on the success of assessment efforts. It became clear that sustainable and effective assessment must take into account existing local cultures to be successful. What works in one library won't necessarily work in others. This presentation reviews the range of organizational cultures encountered and discusses the different approaches recommended to make library assessment work in each library.

Present: Evaluation and ongoing organizational assessment. Future: Flexible organization responding to the University’s needs and strategic plan. The Library is positioning itself for active participation in the University’s Strategic Plan. Several years ago, we restructured the organization to improve our services and our work. Within the last year, an internal task force surveyed and questioned the staff to see what was working well and what needed improvement within the teams, divisions, and organization. The task force then analyzed the feedback and prepared a complete report for the organization. We are now taking that feedback and working on ways to build our strengths, improve our weaknesses, and reach our targets and goals set forth in the strategic plan. A few key areas of focus include: Communication, decision-making, inter-team collaboration, and information overload.

Service Quality In Academic Libraries: An Analysis Of Libqual+â„¢ Scores And Institutional CharacteristicsMiller, Kathleen 01 January 2008 (has links)
This exploratory study considered the problem of assessing quality in academic libraries. The research question that framed the investigation asked whether service quality scores from the LibQUAL+ instrument were related to the following college or university characteristics: institutional type, enrollment level, or the level of investment made in libraries. Data regarding Carnegie classification, FTE enrollment, and library expenditures were collected for 159 college and university libraries that participated in LibQUAL+ during 2006. Descriptive statistics, bivariate correlations, and regression analyses were calculated and the Bonferroni adjustment was applied to significance levels to compensate for errors caused by repeated calculations using the same data. Several statistically significant relationships were found; notably, negative correlations were found between each of the LibQUAL+ scores and total library expenditures. The study suggested that higher expectations among library users in large, research libraries led to slightly lower LibQUAL+ scores. Implications for practice included that survey results should only be used as one component of an assessment strategy, and practitioners might consider the potential role of library marketing or public relations efforts to influence user expectations. Recommendations were made for future research including replicating some aspects of this study with a more representative sample, analyzing respondent comments as well as score data, and exploring whether there are reliable differences in results for different types of institutions or among groups of respondents (students and faculty, or faculty by discipline).

The Effects Of Targeted, Connectivism-Based Information Literacy Instruction On Latino Students Information Literacy Skills And Library Usage BehaviorWalsh, John Barry January 2013 (has links)
The United States is experiencing a socio-demographic shift in population and education. Latinos are the fastest growing segment of the population on the national level and in higher education. The Latino student population growth rate and Latino college completion rate are not reciprocal. While Latino students are the fastest growing demographic group in higher education, they continue to have the lowest persistence and retention rates. Latino students are more at risk for dropping out of college than any other ethnic group. Latinos decreasing persistence rates have caused an academic achievement gap in higher education (Long, 2011). Literature has correlated the gap with Latinos limited IL competency and low library usage (Long, 2011).This quasi-experimental research examined the effects of a targeted information literacy (IL) instructional method on Latino community college students IL skills and library usage. The study also introduced the idea of using a connectivism based targeted instruction to influence Latinos IL skills and library usage. The intent of the study was to investigate the development of information literacy instruction (ILI) which targets Latino students and uses the principles of connectivism. Connectivism posits that students' learn by connecting to information along their personal learning networks (Siemens, 2005). Connectivism helps position the library within Latino students' personal learning networks. This positioning may increase their library usage and by extension their IL skills. Specifically, this quantitative study assessed the effect of the instruction on IL skills and library usage behavior of Latino community college students. A pretest/posttest control group design was used for this study. A sample of 92 Latino male and female students completed the pretest and posttest. They were recruited from a diverse population of community college students who were registered for Introductory English classes. Data was collected through instrumentation that included an Information Literacy Rubric, an Information Literacy Skills Test, a Library Usage Survey/Demographic Identification Form, and a Citation Analysis Form. Though two of the hypotheses were not supported, the data collected allowed the researcher to accomplish two of the purposes of this study, to design and assess a targeted ILI that increases Latino students' IL skills and library usage, and to advance the research that grounds the emerging learning theory of connectivism. The more connections students made to information sources the higher their overall IL skill score were. This data suggests that as students make connections to information resources they are learning IL skills and the more sources they connect to, the more they learn. Though TI did not emerge as the more effective method, it is effective at increasing library usage and IL skills in Latino community college students'. The results of this study may lead to a better understanding of how students acquire IL skills. Instruction has become increasingly important in librarianship and recently has even eclipsed traditional reference service. (Grassian & Kaplowitz, xix, 2009). More and more academic libraries are being held accountable for their contribution to student learning. The findings of this study provide evidence that the instructional efforts of the library are influencing student learning outcomes.

Evaluation von Bibliotheken unter doppeltem Druck, den Wert der Bibliothek zu demonstrieren und gleichzeitig die Werte der bibliothekarischen Profession einzuhalten. Um eine Praxis der Bibliotheksevaluation zu unterstützen, die sowohl den Wert der Bibliothek als auch die bibliothekarische Werte anspricht, untersucht diese Dissertation die Praxis der Bibliotheksevaluation durch die Perspektive praktischer Ethik und angewandter Werte. Die Hauptforschungsfrage lautet: „Wie kann Bibliotheksbewertung ethisch durchgeführt werden?“ Ich folgte einem dreistufigen Forschungsdesign: eine Literaturrecherche, eine Umfrage und Interviews. Die Literaturrecherche konzentriert sich auf die Ethik, Werte, Dilemmata und Praktiken von Bewertungspraktiker:innen. Eine vignettenbasierte Umfrage untersuchte Werte und Ethik bei der Bewertung von Bibliotheken weiter. Die Umfragedaten wurden mittels der konstruktivistischen Grounded Theory analysiert und die daraus resultierenden Codes etablierten ein neues Rahmenwerk und ein neues Instrument für die ethische Bewertung von Bibliotheken. Schließlich wurde das Instrument mit dem Namen Values-Sensitive Library Assessment Toolkit durch Interviews mit Bewertungspraktiker:innen validiert. Die Forschungsergebnisse zeigen, dass Praktiker:innen der Bibliotheksbewertung eine ethische Praxis anstreben, aber durch eine komplexe und dezentralisierte Wertelandschaft herausgefordert werden, die viele konkurrierende Möglichkeiten zur Identifizierung und Umsetzung von Werten bietet. Das Toolkit dient dazu, einen Satz von Werten zu modellieren, den Praktiker:innen anwenden können, um eine ethische Bewertungspraxis zu unterstützen. / Library assessment practitioners face dual pressures to demonstrate library value and adhere to library values. To support a practice of library assessment that addresses both library value and library values, this dissertation examines the practice of library assessment through the lens of practical ethics and applied values. The main research question asks, “How can library assessment be practiced ethically?” I followed a three-step research design: a literature review, a survey, and interviews. The literature review focuses on the ethics, values, dilemmas, and practices of library assessment practitioners. A vignette-based survey further investigated values and ethics in assessment. Survey data was analyzed through constructivist grounded theory, and the resulting set of codes established a new framework and toolkit for ethical library assessment. Finally, the toolkit—named the Values-Sensitive Library Assessment Toolkit—was validated through interviews with assessment practitioners. Research findings indicate that library assessment practitioners seek an ethical practice, but are challenged by a complex and decentralized values landscape that offers many competing choices for identifying and implementing values. The toolkit serves to model a value set that practitioners can apply to support an ethical assessment practice.
