Exploring the Experiences and Sense-making of Patients and Informal Caregivers in the Inpatient Specialist Palliative Care ContextKabir, Monisha 19 January 2022 (has links)
Palliative and end-of-life care (PEOLC) involves the use of an interprofessional approach to improve quality of life for patients facing life-threatening illness, and their informal caregivers (e.g. family, other loved ones). Though many patients with life-threatening illness report desires to die at home, people with PEOLC needs continue to die in hospital settings. Given the considerable differences between inpatient and outpatient PEOLC settings, and the potentially increased future need for inpatient PEOLC services, it is critical to explore how patients and caregivers experience and make sense of illness and care in such settings. To contribute to this gap in the literature, I conducted a scoping review on patient and informal caregiver experiences in inpatient specialist palliative care (SPC) settings and semi-structured interviews with patients and caregivers on the Bruyère inpatient SPC unit. I identified three overarching themes from included studies (n=104), including patient and informal caregiver: i) perceptions of care, the interprofessional palliative care team, and the care environment; ii) communication with the interprofessional team; and iii) impacts of illness and care on quality of life. I conducted interviews with three patients and four informal caregivers. Using an inductive thematic analysis approach, I identified three key themes of patient and informal caregiver experiences within the context of the Bruyère inpatient SPC unit: i) the journey of dealing with life-threatening illness; ii) impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic; and iii) attempts to cope and find peace. Based on my findings, improvements are needed to the provision of person-centred care to address patients’ and informal caregivers’ supportive needs. Further work is needed to identify reforms to support improved education and awareness about palliative care to patients, informal caregivers, and the general public.

Life-giving and life-threatening potential of water and water-related phenomena in the Old Testament wisdom literature : an eco-theological explorationKavusa, Kivatsi Jonathan 09 1900 (has links)
The thrust of this thesis proceeds from two main presuppositions. The first is that the Old Testament wisdom books are generally ignored or not given enough attention in the studies about water and water-related phenomena. The second is that the romantic perspective on elements of the natural world is dominant in eco-theological studies. To highlight this twofold problem, a sample survey into the works of the scholarly biblical dictionaries, encyclopedias, books and articles as well as ecotheological studies is offered in the second chapter of this thesis.
In an attempt to (partly) address this problem, this study argues that, firstly, despite a scarcity of scholarly interest in water and water-related phenomena in the Old Testament wisdom books, this body of literature contains a rich variety of references to water and water-related phenomena. Secondly, it is shown in this study that an overly-romantic view of nature does not do justice to the richness, complexity, and variety of portrayals of elements of nature in the texts themselves.
In this sense, this study aims at retrieving ecological wisdom from particular texts that give voice to both the life-giving and life-threatening potential of water and water-related phenomena in the Old Testament wisdom books. The exploration is facilitated by elements of the historical-critical and literary approaches through an ecological framework informed by four of the six eco-justice principles of the Earth Bible Project.
The thesis suggests that scholars who attempt ecological readings of the Bible will gain more if they also take less favoured texts into consideration. The exploration of water and water-related phenomena in the Old Testament wisdom books, therefore, goes beyond what studies on water or water-related phenomena have hitherto done. Furthermore, a study on both aspects of water as a life-giving and life-threatening entity demonstrates that an eco-friendly view of nature does not do justice to the biblical texts themselves. This will be seen through the third, fourth, fifth and sixth chapters. / Old Testament and Ancient Near Eastern Studies / D. Th. (Old Testament)

The experiences of social workers in rendering palliative care services : suggestions for social workersNyamndaya, Tendayi 02 1900 (has links)
Palliative care is one of the crucial services provided by social workers to improve the quality of life of people suffering from life-threatening illnesses. It is an inter-disciplinary medical care giving approach which focuses on relieving symptoms and stress of life threatening illness. To my knowledge there is limited guidelines on how social workers
should intervene in providing palliative care services.
Therefore, this study will the explore experiences of social workers in rendering palliative care services to people faced with life-threatening illnesses. The study will follow a qualitative research approach. Purposive and snowball sampling will be employed to frame the sample of social workers who render palliative care services.
Ethical issues regarding informed consent, confidentiality/anonymity and management of information will be considered and attended to. Data will be collected through semi structured interviews and analysed in terms of Tesch eight steps. The Guba and Lincoln’s model will be employed for data verification (Lincoln and Guba in Schurink,
Fouché and de Vos 2011:419-421). / Social Work / M.A. (Social Work)

Riglyne vir die psigoterapeutiese hantering van die vigslyer en sy gesinDu Toit, Jacoba Johanna 06 1900 (has links)

A questionnaire incorporating important aspects of the cause and effect of aids was compiled and given to the aids sufferers and family to complete. From the responses it was clearly evident that the fears of the unknown, the stigma attached to the victim's close associates and family, was a problem, and the route course of incredible naive and false rumours. A chapter of the research focused on literature to establish what was the major aspects of the problem expressed by the media. Guidelines were provided whereby therapy could address and allay these fears to assist the family to better understand the illness and it's effects. This chapter has in mind to provide the Psychologist with guidelines to provide therapy to both the victim and the family in this regard. This study confirms that the survivors are the actual victims. / Educational studies / M.Ed. (Voorligting)
